Unreal, Quake, Crysis, and Tribes
No one really plays the multiplayer portions? Unreal, Quake, and Tribes were INSANELY popular in their hayday. Crisis isn't total sci-fi I would say, and it is limited by the outlandish game requirements.
Do a sci-fi game right, and people will eat it up. If CoD can pull off a "realistic" science-fiction setting I think it would top the charts. I know I'm craving for a new sci-fi shooter. What's out there now? Mass Effect is good, but there's no multiplayer and it's more of an RPG than a shooter (although the shooter portions are very good). There's Halo, but I don't play consoles and it's too simplistic for me. I was almost tempted to look into Planetside but I heard that is also pretty much abandoned.
Does anyone have any recommendations for current decent sci-fi shooters (good multiplayer a plus)?
