I agree. However, I just finished reading the article in Game Informer, and it *sounds* like the action will be much more action oriented than CoH/V. We will see, but I am hopeful.
The ability to build your own arch nemesis from scratch is just brilliant!
The combat system isn't really what I was concerned about. CoH had a fantastic combat system in my opinion, with you almost always facing 3-6 enemies at once. This means you had to multitask between the enemies, figure out with one was the biggest threat, and concentrate on knocking them down so you could target the others. My most memorable experience in any MMO was playing CoH. Although the majority of PvP in that game is extremely unbalanced, if you get into a fair fight it was a blast. I was chasing down a villain and shooting energy beams at it, all the while flying through streets and over buildings. I eventually downed him and it was the most satisfying kill I've ever had.
The problem with CoX was the instanced missions. Essentially, every mission boiled down to killing bad guys. There were no delivery of messages or searching for some item - everything was combat related. And even more annoying was that the same layouts were used for said missions over and over again. Whether the mission was in a warehouse, office building, cave, enemy base, etc, you would see the same layouts over and over again. Eventually every mission came down to "Kill enemies. Click on glowing thing. Kill more enemies. Click on another glowing thing. Rinse and repeat."
Add to that that there was no true loot system (they kind of jerry-rigged that in there with the invention system) and you found you really weren't striving for much besides the next level.
It always made me mad that when new costume pieces came out (except for the invention ones), you had to BUY with real money to get them. For example, the Good vs. Evil edition had some spiffy new costume pieces, along with a jetpack and a teleporter device. In order to get those items, you had to either buy the Good vs. Evil edition or pay $10 to get the items. Why could I go on missions to EARN those pieces? Same thing goes with the Valentine's Day stuff.
What I did love about CoX was that it was very casual. There really isn't raiding and most missions can be finished in 30 minutes, if that. The zone-wide events like the Rikti invasion scale to your level, so ANY hero can take part. That part they really did get right. A lot of everything else though is just damn annoying.
