I remember reading a review that Tom Clancy was supposed to be very concerned with realism in his games, even going to the point to debate the inclusion of the thermal and night vision apparatus in Splinter Cell, because there was no way a device like that could be built in real life. You can see this attention to realism also in the early Rainbow Six games.
Apparently, that has all gone out the window.
Let me tell you what I want... another Jane's game. Longbow II was amazing, and F-15 was a giant step in the right direction. Not to mention that US Navy Fighters, ATF, USAF, and I presume IAF were a hell of a lot of fun without totally sacrificing the realism.
I remember reading about the concept behind "Jane's World War" which was going to be an MMO (before MMOs were even coined) but instead of having its separate client, the player would play by playing whatever game they want, so if they wanted to fly planes they would boot up USAF, if they wanted to drive submarines they would boot up that Jane's sub sim (I forget what it was called), Longbow if they wanted to fly Apaches, etc... I creamed my pants at that, and I was sincerely disappointed when Jane's was disbanded.
