Carriers urge FCC to give them some more fat subsidies and govt sponsored monopolies so they'll lay fiber.

This. Hey I'd lay fiber here if I got a government guarantee'd monopoly, too. That's a license to extort!

Strawman argument. Would you let Microsoft into your home and rummage through your stuff and log everything and send that information to whomever they want for any reason and keep that information? I doubt it! But you'd call someone who doesn't want that in the digital sense paranoid?

If you put a sniffer on your network you will see they have been doing this for years without common knowledge. Every couple hours your Winbox sends info to msft. More than just a ping/pong conversation.

You're lumping it all together but there are differences. Okay so Win7 is calling the mother ship at MSFT but it seems far more intrusive with W10 in how it's likely collecting all your web traffic, conversations in the room, everything we type, everything we buy, and could be sending an index of all of your files (and the files themselves) to them. I don't see how you imply makes it nothing new. It is an order of magnitude more intrusive.

edit: not only just that data, but seems to give them outright ownership of your data on your own PC and let them use it in any way they desire. Am I wrong?

I haven't dumped the traffic myself yet but I will probably do that later today. I suspect its much ado about nothing, peoples phones and search engine use gather way more information on them every day. That being said I see the potential for abuse there and think it should be closely watched.

Because they can and will update the software, what it's capturing today is only part of the picture. The EULA seems to give a very wide lateral as to what they can do on our devices going forward. It is cause for concern and diligence on our part.

Six+ months of fixing and polish is exactly what Bethesda needs to do considering their track record. Count me optimistic and hopeful. They've had four years since Skyrim. Has their staffing count increased since Skyrim? How many man/woman/dog hours have gone into F4 compared with Skyrim?

Oh LOL maybe. It's just that I very often see people get it backwards and think that not using big corporations is 'socialist' when that's very much not true. The opposite is true. The duopoly is socialist.

But....that's socialism! [/outrage]. These customers would be much better off with the private market that won't actually service them.

Umm.. No. People solving their own problems is by definition the private sector at work. That's not socialist. Private market/sector delivering services doesn't necessarily mean profit or business motive.

Actually what we have now with the duopoly IS socialist - corporate socialism.

IMO we haven't seen enough to accurately judge it yet. The combat looks improved over FO3 though. I'm cautiously optimistic. It does 'look' fun but I guess after watching it, it does look more consoley gameplay. Too early to tell how much or if they've devolved it to an action shooter.

If you want more old school FO gameplay you have Wasteland 2, etc.. That genre is being revived..

It's a low paying opportunity but maybe for some people that is perfectly fine. There are people who need experience much more than income. NZ loses.

China is becoming hugely rich by underpaying their workers. It's hard work and exploitative yes but over time people do get richer and more experienced. Same thing happened in the US a hundred years ago. You've got to start somewhere.

Except you show that you are the average american and don't know anything.

Who rules america?

Yes but that's far and beyond the range of this topic. This is about New Zeland which is a different country and since you don't know the difference between two different countries I'd say you need to eat your own words about not knowing 'anything'.

Chicago Netflix customers- Your bill is about to go up 9 percent.

Wow, can cities charge consumption taxes? I've only ever heard of states doing that. It's one thing for a national company to have to keep track of 50 states' laws, but to then have to also track 100s of cities? That seems like a burden.

It's called a "cloud tax." It imposes a 9-percent tax on "patrons of amusement." I imagine that your WoW subscription and Steam purchases would also fall under this? Any Chicagoans out there know?

Apparently Chicago is rife with corruption/extortion. Their government is the same. So I've heard.

The frame latency tests show that the brute force approach isn't bringing an enjoyable (smooth) experience.

Great hardware with mediocre (or worse) drivers. They need to take the opposite approach, or at better balance their dollar investment between the two.

Thankfully nv control panel allows 1/2 vsync framerate so 120hz monitor refresh can still be played @60 fps but that's a workaround, not a fix.

You can use NVInspector to set specific refresh rates per game. I can run Skyrim up to exactly 85hz before the world goes physics bonkers. Starts right at 86hz.

Yes true. My screen looks best at 120hz so I much prefer the 1/2 vsync workaround. Also I think it might help game responsiveness (no proof of that) to keep screen refresh at 120.
