I think it's from twitter (verifying that now) I snagged it off the thread on Reddit.com (LINK) to which my little ovaltine joke was taken by someone here

Uh heh it's a good joke but sorry I didn't take it from another post anywhere. It's a funny and memorable part of that movie.

will be getting on the pc, and will be happy that its counting to my gamerscore on my xbox.

I've never really understood the draw of gamerscore. It's not like a points system on a FPS server for example because the scales aren't weighted fairly, one person might be 1000 points above because they bought Barbie Funhouse for the cheevos. What do people get out of it, just bragging rights or something? I've tried asking my friends but they can't even articulate it beyond they like seeing numbers increment.

It's an ego booster. It works. Atari Pong did this when they added a score counter to the game where the Magnavox Odyssey console version didn't. The story of 'me' is important to the ego. "I beat you" - a simple little story that the ego can understand. Or in the case of gamescore, "My score is 342342 points." It's a little story. People kill and die over this stuff.

AFAIC, T4 is a must buy for Tropico fans. Maybe not at full price, but get it when the price is right for you. I'm thinking $20 is reasonable for most fans of T3.

When I play modern RPG's I always compare the dungeons to DM, and they never live up to that. Likewise I see MMO dungeons these days and all they are, are impersonal fodder grounds (or whatever you call it). I hope this game brings interactivity, scary immersion and fun puzzles back into RPG dungeons.

Yeah, TF and TFC were so much fun. They were real PC games. Now TF2, is just a dumbed down console game. With a funny graphic style, I give em that, but still nothing compared to TF/TFC gameplay-wise.

There is one other number as interesting as the magnitude of a quake & thats the depth, you guys had a very shallow quake.

I think it's the shallow quakes that feel stronger. This quake was less than 4km down which is very shallow. Here in the DC Metro area it was like our building was attached to a big washing machine that was on an imbalanced spin cycle. We had one last year (3.6) that was louder because it's epicenter was only a few miles away but this one shook more. I'm hearing this year's is a 5.9 or 5.8, not sure which it really was. Big difference between the two.

And if you were near the epicenter, you'd not laugh at a 5.9.

I can wait for the inevitable patches, DLC, and cheap price tag. I'm sure I'll like the game, but I have learned never to preorder or buy games right when they come out.

Hard not to buy now and join in the excitement of a good game. Need to padlock my wallet.

Maybe a legit reason to wait is for them to patch the AI? Reviews have harked on that.

Don't the original M&M (first person) games go back to the early 90's? I played one in about 1992. Got lots of praise but I found it boring compared to Dungeon Master or the Ultimas.

If EA et al. want to cut out the middleman than why doesn't that reflect in the price of their games?

Games are priced on a monopolistic competition model

What monopoly is this? I've not seen a monopoly in the games market. That's because there isn't any. EA not selling BF3 on STEAM does not qualify as a monopoly.

killer_roach wrote on Aug 17, 2011, 22:30:
- to wit, to maximize profits, you're best off just staying in line with what most other similar titles (in terms of size and age) are going for. The name of the game is to charge what the market will bear, capture as much of the consumer's willingness to pay as possible, then lower the price as demand starts to tail off. Nothing about lowering overhead would result in their charging a lower price

We are experiencing monetary inflation around the world so if games this year are the same price as last year then the actual cost is indeed lowering. Lowering overhead can certainly lower lower prices. In fact, new development software is constantly reducing overhead costs for developing games. Imagine trying to develop Skyrim or BF3 in 1980. It would cost many hundreds of millions of dollars or more. It couldn't be done then and even break even.

killer_roach wrote on Aug 17, 2011, 22:30:
, since you're not angling to be the customer's one purchase (as would be the case for a big-ticket item like a car or a house), you're simply trying to be the next purchase.

The reduction of overhead on the part of the producer doesn't affect consumer purchasing decisions on the margins, although it may rankle some people who pay close attention to those sorts of things.

If a competitor can offer a better value then the customer will go there. Reducing overhead is very important to businesses as a way to stay price-competitive. That reduction in overhead does indeed pass down to the consumer. Not every time, but it does very often.

sigh. I see these Carl Marx University graduates too often.

Not surprised to learn this but still enlightening to watch those vids! Here's the basic rule: failure is rewarded with more money. Politicians are good at selling the case that more money is always needed and that money can solve our problems. So I'm thinking that if a dump truck dumped a trillion dollars on a police station crime would instantly disappear.

It's looking good. Gives me more of a BC3 vibe than BF3. Will play it though. BC2 lasted me about two months then it was very stale. Been playing BF2 (mods!) six years and still counting. No moding will chase away the more hardcore players. Would pay $100 for a DICE Project Reality type expansion or DLC though.

FO3 definitely has better dungeons. They were bigger, more interesting and most of them had some sort of backstory, whereas most of the dungeons in FNV were small, bland and typically had no backstory (which is weird given the game's much better writing).

If Obsidian makes another Fallout game and improves their dungeon design, they may just have the best RPG evar.

Yea FO3 has waaay better dungeons. Absolutely love the FO3 environment. I tried to like NV but the world pales in comparison, to me. I already had FO3 but I also picked up last week's STEAM deal to get all the DLC and have it on STEAM. Well worth it. Fully modded it's a fantastic game. But it's difficult to mod extensively and keep stable but it's good for me with only a ctd every four hours or so and the savegame isn't corrupting. Here's my mod list:

1. San Francisco Subway's Decision to Halt Cell Phone Service Fuels Criticism. Aug 14, 2011, 23:52 LittleMe

So very many people want their government to run their lives and then when their governments do what they always do, people show their true naivety and get surprised and shocked to the tyrannical reality around them.

"As far as I know, no governmental entity in this country has ever done anything like this."
Just because it hasn't happened before doesn't mean it can't happen.

"BARTís deputy police chief said he decided to switch off the service out of concern that protesters on station platforms could clash with commuters, create a panic and put people in the way of speeding trains or the high-voltage third rails. "

Joseph Stalin would be proud of that rhetoric.

36. Re: EA: PC Aug 14, 2011, 08:34 LittleMe

It seems to me that the next generation of consoles will not be nearly so bleeding edge to compete with PC as well as this generation was a few years ago. Also with phones & tablets the market is more diluted. Tablet games are more suited to PC ports than consoles also. Don't presume the next generation of consoles will cost $500-$600 like the last ones did. They won't. The centrally planned economy is still in the dumps and the PC is a far, far more flexible beast to deal with the current economic situation than a console maker.
