GTA:VC 4 PC, yay! Dec 18, 2002, 15:54

I had no idea there was a report back in May that there will be a PC port of GTA:VC. I don't remember things back that far, or even last week for that matter. Plus I had only started playing GTA3 about 3 months ago, and didn't know the existence of VC until a bit later after that. At first I thought VC was going to be an add-on to GTA3.

But I'm very glad to hear this, now I have somewhat less of a reason to get a PS2, and perhaps get an Xbox instead, or just wait longer till the prices drop another $50 for the consoles. I haven't owned a console since the NES days.

This is weird.. After I installed it on my XP system, I had to reboot (dunno why.. no big deal).. after I rebooted I got this odd message that I didn't have DX9 properly installed, and I needed to reinstall. Heck as far as I knew I was still running 8.1a. (or whatever comes with the SP1) The game runs fine regardless.

Video games? where? Dec 3, 2002, 17:18
Dec 3, 2002, 17:18

This is weird.. The walmart in my area sells NO PC video games, or for that matter anything PC related. Last time I was at a Walmart, there was a shopping cart full of old PC junk they were trying to sell off at a discount. IBM optical mice, 3Com dialup modems, power strips (of all things), and some old cheesy video games, and old software no one needs. It was really sad. I recall about 2 years ago I got the Star Wars Pod Racer game for the PC there for Xmas. Now they don't have jack.

I can't stand Walmart anymore, I find the place to be dirty and un-kept, so I never go there anymore. Target is much better chain, clean nice, and they have PC Games often cheaper than places lie Best Buy. OH and then there's Kmart? Don't ask.. only thing worse than Walmart is Kmart.. broken down building,d HORRIBLE food at their food court. Crowded ilse of utter crap you can barely move your shopping cart though. And now they have "do it your self" check out counters, where you have to scan your own stuff, and bag it your self. Total bullshit! No wonder Kmart is in bankrupt.

My favorite attachment is the little brush bit on my cheap-o dremel tool. It's the PERFECT tool to get all those little bits of dust off my computer hardware. I have boxes of old (and still useful) cards (nics, video card, etc..) and all of them have a faint coat of dust on them, and you can't get the dust off, but you CAN with the brush bit for your Dremel. After a few rounds with it, the card looks bran-spanking new!

This isn't a mod in the same way that it has become a diffrent game entirely. This is just an admin tool. Using the word "mod" in it's name is rather missleading.

Jezz all this bitching about the announcer. I find the announcer very usefull. It prompts me where I need to go after I respawn, with out having to glace up top of the screen letting me know if the other team has the flag. It's also useful camping up at the top of thier flag (above the hole) and I can keep my guard up with out having to look down the hole every few moments to see if the flag has returned.

I'll go for a change in the voice so he dosen't sound like a cheezy game show host, but I still find it useful.

As for the rest of you bitcihing about how it's too much like Q3A.. so what? Was not Team Arena an attempt to be more like UT? TU2003 is a much better engine than Q3A, I've never seen more realistic enviroments, other than in nVidia demos. It's nice seeing some real DX 8.1 support.

Anyhow.. I like it... if you don't then don't play it, play something else. Comparing this to Battlefield 1942 is apples an oranges. BT42 has some glaring graphical problems, but the game play it self is good.

Sure DM is old and moldy... but it's the foundation of muliplayer. If you don't hone DM skills you'll be shitty at multiplayer.

If you use SmartSpy server, then you won't end up querying 40k of servers. Since you said you're registered, just set up a smart spy, and you can specify the kinds of servers you want to ping. W/o smart spy you end up querying ALL Half Life Servers. this lets you narrow it down to at least the mod type, and even the map if you want it to.

Also in the last few version of GS3D the updating has been speed up and only takes about 20 seconds to get a list up (of about 2000 servers). use the shotgun option of you have the bandwidth. Of course if you're on dialup you're gonna wait a long time for whatever you're doing.

The problem with GameSpy 3D right now is it’s old and crusty. It needs a major overhaul. Half features and functions people don’t use, or probably don’t even know it exists. Did you know it has an IRC client? It sucks ass, but it has one. Player lists still show [0][0] skin colors, which only apply to old Quake/Quakeworld. It’s still “QuakeSpy” with a bunch of shit tacked on whenever a new game comes out.

And GameSpy 3D is updated but not very often. Perhaps a few times every year. I my self have switched over to GameSpy Arcade, it lacks some of the features I liked in GS3D (like detecting private spots on servers),, but I can really do with out the annoying twits in the chatrooms in GSA.

Well there must be something released already. Extended Play on TechTV will be doing a preview of the game next week. And from the way it looks... it looks just like UT with grainer graphics.. Makes be belive this will be a console relase, or the screen shots they had must have been on an old video card.

Prime for violence? I'm not totaly sure what you mean by that. If you mean it prepares people for voliance, I rather doubt that. I would say that it desentitizes<sp> you to violence. Much like TV does as well as movies. It just makes violent acts just a boring and medicore thing, that it dosen't seem to be a big deal anymore.

Last time I went to the dentist was to get my wisdom tooth pulled. After one night benging on chewy candies, it went ape shit. The pain was felt in a diffrent spot in my mouth the dentist said it had to be my bad wisdom tooth (acctualy they all are). I could have also could use a cleaning, but he just pulled it. At least it was totaly painless since the tooth was so rotton it came out easily, and didn't hurt at all after the novacane wore off.

This is a valid point. The whole PURPOSE of PK3 files was so that whenever you needed to change something in the game, you simply MAKE a new PK3 files to update whatever is needed.

But when developers get ANAL RETENTIVE (e.g. John Romero), they release patches that directly modify the PK3 files that already exist. Remember Daikatana and the 6 hour update patches that painstakingly updated two LARGE ASS PK2 files over 150megs each? Good lord, I wanted to shoot Romero so badly back then.

There are some problems that people have had:

Delete (or rename) your old DOD subfolder in your half-life folder. You need to do a fresh install of DoD for the game to work. You DON'T need to reinstall half life, but it needs to be currently updated.

Problems with Voodoo users getting Overflow errors, and getting dumped off the server after about 30 seconds. The problem is with GL-mini drivers (WickedGL mainly), and you should use the regular "standard" GL drivers that you can find at voodoofiles.com

Also setting a heapsize of 65536 might help. Some Geforce 2 users also have this overflow problem, but mainly it's with Voodoo 3 based cards.

Dark Space plain sucks. All I see is a misdrawn UI, with parts of it streched accross the screen. It seems to try to be a Homeworld clone (now that was a good game), with a half broken interface. The installer is a joke, kept giving me errors all the time as it tries to access my A: drive. When trying to uninstall, I got the same problems and told me that all the game files (like client.exe) was a locked file, and couldn't delte it. WTF is the deal? This is a total joke.

So now how in the hell am I supposed to remove this stupid game off my system when the installer dosen't work?

BTW.. I never saw any chicks with nice boobs!?!?

Fov? Dec 16, 2001, 14:23
Dec 16, 2001, 14:23

If you play this game on a wide screen, won't you need to change your FOV for it seem better? A standard FOV of 90 means that the left and right sides of the screen are exactly 90 degrees from each other, from the center of the screen being the corner of that angle.

With a wide screen monitor, this would act almost like a zoom at 90, since the side of the screen is wider, PLUS the top and bottom of the screen would be chopped off. Would it not?

I would guess you'd have to set a slightly wider fov so you don't loose any vertical views as you would with standard monitor, and then take advantage of the extra viewing areas at the sides. Say a FOV of 100, or 110.

Also a lot of the manual settings to make games (or anything for that matter) work on a wide screen simply stretch the video across the screen, with no resolution or aspect ratio change. Most WS monitors do this already with a button on the side or something. All it does is makes your pixels fatter.
