News Comments > Anthem Demo Pre-Downloads
22. Re: Anthem Demo Pre-Downloads Jan 23, 2019, 14:49 Alamar

Just curious... Anyone have any studies on the effects of pre-ordering... I don't mean some gamer site that just has a well-expressed (or not) point of view/opinion... I mean, I assume I just missed this fact-based research, because so many of you are always talking about how true 'pre-order bad' is...

Personally, I've pre-ordered a dozen or two titles... One of which was a huge disappointment, and the wife and I got refunds for it.

I may also pre-order this, based on how the demo feels (even though it's going to be soooo different, or something). I also know there will be a bunch of issues at launch (show me a software product without bugs at launch). And yes, surely, waiting for the 'GOTY' edition is smarter financially, but it's one of many factors.

There are pros, like seeing the content before the spoilers and memes, and being on the forefront of exploration... And there are cons, like the inevitable bugs and disconnects, and higher cost per content... Do your own cost/benefit analysis, and figure it out for yourself whether it's worth it ; )

Edit: Well that's unfortunate... Anthem launches on the wrong monitor while fucking over some other active window(s)... No options available until the servers are up, because that makes sense... : P

7. Re: Countdown to Anthem Jan 22, 2019, 22:25 Alamar

I'm looking forward to this... And I'm happy to see an 'open demo' on the 1st...

And I as assuming the Play First Trial was free, but it wants me to log in with a subscriber acct, or pay $5 USD, so hopefully that demo 2w before is good : )

As for buying at launch... Depends on some friends feelings too, but if I buy it at launch, and there's paid DLC within a few months (like Destiny 2), I may just drop and never return... On the one hand, new content is great... On the other... That's way too soon for paid content. We'll see how EA does with their stellar record : )

"balance is super different"

who was the one saying how the game will be super easy to yadayadayada milk cows etc?

whoever complained that the 1-hour livestream video looked so easy, cause EA doesn't want to scare people away by dying so they can keep them on the MTX train or some such nonsense?

this is how demos work. The Division open beta's meta and balance was totally different from launch.

I took it to mean that the balance across classes is different... Because... Balance is a polish thing (not likely to be done by launch in any game), so it, and the timing, makes sense to me.

News Comments > Anthem Video
7. Re: Anthem Video Dec 22, 2018, 18:05 Alamar

Looking good to me... I'm pretty excited to play in a month or three...

Loving the extra mobility (forward charges), which is something Destiny lacks for me, as I love me some mobility. I mean, I absolutely love the thruster-glide mechanic of the Titan/Warlock, which is great for verticality, but really miss being able to quickly move laterally. Though I haven't watched enough of the vid to see if you can strafe quickly, which would also be quite nice...

Also liking the melee aspect, which I enjoyed immensely in Warframe, and Destiny (though too limited)...

I always find the comments about how Warframe is so much better to be funny, and much like any new MMO being compared to WoW's content and features when it was 5-8 years along... Early Warframe was crazy repetitive gameplay and (randomly generated room/corridor based) maps, and their enhancement (meta) system is still shit... I still put hundreds of hours into it, because progressing through the story was interesting enough, even with all that repetition (which, much like all music, all games rely heavily on).

King Royale: The Card Game

Nice...

I'd like someone to come out with a 'Last Man Standing' game, and pretend it's all new... So that the yutes of today can complain that it's ripping off Battle Royale... : )

So Carmack stole shit when he left?

He stole shit and gave it to Suckerjerk out of all people. $300 million is way too cheap for such a capital offense. Should've been 300bn to really put a dent in Fuckbook.

This is such bullshit. At worst he was negligent, as the the entire case was built by Zenimax around the fact that he worked on Oculus code while he was still a Zenimax employee. It doesn't matter that Zenimax never used a single line of code, and that they never intended to develop VR tech.

Carmack goes into great detail about what he did, and other completely circumstantial evidence about arbitrary lines of code used in every single fucking program ever, that Zenimax presented to a "layman" jury as evidence that Oculus/Facebook stole code.

Still... That's one hell of an expensive employee...

On another note... Really not surprised CJ can't distinguish his hate for Facebook and what actually happened here...

Yeah they keep using that "multiple projects" term.

If they would just come out and say Diablo 4 is coming when its done that would end a bunch of the anger. It obviously would stir up the media types, but at least the actual paying customers wouldn't be looking to burn down Blizzard.

The longer they don't say that...the more cynical I get. I don't want first person Diablo. (for example) It is so easy to be clear about these things and yet they continue to be vague even in the face of such negative press and consumer reaction. It seems kinda weird and counter-productive to me.

They know all this... If there were a Diablo 4 coming, they would have said so... It's other projects in the same 'lore', and likely different genres...

News Comments > Destiny 2 Free Gambit Trial
8. Re: Destiny 2 Free Gambit Trial Nov 10, 2018, 11:37 Alamar

I'm enjoying it again... Playing with some new (to the game, and not) friends.

Picked up Forsaken, which now includes Osiris/Warmind, and enjoyed all three so far. Am considering throwing another chunk at getting the 'Annual Pass' or whatever it's called for the next three smaller (Osiris/Warmind sized) DLCs too.

Previously, I had gotten it at launch, and was annoying when Osiris came out 'too early', and wanted another $20 USD or whatever... Then when Forsaken came out, a friend was raving about it, but I couldn't justify paying that same $20 USD per Osiris/Warmind, and another $40 USD for Forsaken... But now that they're included, yay for me, and boo for those that paid double what I did.

However, this is the nature of gaming, and it's not like they're the first to do it... Plenty of MMO's had full launch prices, then monthly subs, then they went F2P... I paid for every WoW expansion when it was launched, and now they're all included in the latest...

Triple A SP titles come out at full price, and less than half a year later are 33-50% discounted, and then you can pick them up for $10 USD another 6-12 months after that... Pay to play or save and wait... Same shit here ; ) Though when it goes back to full base price next week, there'll be a lot more salt... Unless buying Forsaken gives you the base game then too.

Prez wrote on Nov 5, 2018, 09:27:
I have to disagree that the good VR games aren't there. Until you've raced at 180mph in a Ferrari in VR or piloted a starfighter or fighter jet in VR you haven't seen just how awesome VR is right now. Sure, there's tons of VR asset flip drek on Steam but, well, it's Steam. It has been ages since Valve worried about quality control, so who is surprised?

Agreed with this... I was reluctant to jump on the bandwagon, because when Dactyl Nightmare came out, I was all over that shit, and thought the idea was awesome... But the fad died, so when it came back, I was all 'meh'... Even with my co-worker, for an entire year, telling me how great it was...

Finally picked it up on a whim and was truly amazed, as is anyone else I invite over to try it (and being a 'convert', I'm always inviting people over to try it ; ). I now have it set up on it's own PC in it's own room.

As for games that I think are great...
- Lone Echo, is probably still my singular top pick... It's a 0G game, which, surprising to me, didn't make me motion sick (I almost always prefer teleport movement). The controls were great, and the graphics are top of the (VR) line, and it has a story, which is about as good as any game.
- Killing Floor: Incursion. Very good shooter, again with good graphics, minus a few stupid design aspects (like not knowing wtf to do on the final level).
- Beat Saber... This is my jam... Holy shit, it's such a simple concept, but it feels and plays great, and the music fits it so well.

I have another 10-15 or so, and not many are worth mentioning... I've been putting a lot of time into 'In Death', but it's in EA, and very basic (and punishing) gameplay... It's a bow shooter, so that appeals to me, and I've gotten a lot better at it, so that's nice... It also has it's annoying issues (like lack of pace and balance, and teleporting mobs that appear behind you, but you don't hear).

Lastly... VR Porn... It's not truly VR, because that would require a camera to be able to move... So it's basically just a movie you can look around a room in (assuming you have a reason to look away from the action : ). It has some other negatives, related to the restriction above... But holy shit... Porn has never been so immersive (outside of that one scene where you could see a camera man off to the side: 'Dude... Go away')... Especially if you have a willing partner helping along while you're watching the action.
