So far I've downloaded this demo from 3 different locations and each time I start the install I get this message:

cod2demo.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

Anyone else get this?

You people DO realize that Quake was there before COD, right? And that Quake 2 involved a massive invasion of Stroggos by human armies, right?

Top notch graphics, sound effects, and combat. It's like a HK John Woo flick meets The Ring.

After a series of overrated and crappy games like Half Life 2 and Battlefield 2 it's nice to see a game that actually delivers.

that fucks the game up further?

I hope they did something about the unlocked weapons that the 1.01 patch locked back up for no apparent reason.

HL2 fans are really defensive people. If Steam was shipped with any other game they'd be screaming about Steam ruining the gaming industry and multiplayer. Face it, they'll defend anything HL2-related.
Anyway I don't care about Valve or their medicore FPSs anymore. With Steam, they're laughing all the way to the bank.

Glad to see someone else here is aware of the Hong Kong films QT "borrowed" from. City on Fire is a personal favorite of mine.

"HL2 is undeserving but San Andreas and Doom 3 are? "

San Andreas, yes. Doom 3, maybe not, but I prefer it over those other games. Painkiller was my overall favorite.

"Doom 3 had tons of atmosphere, but no variation in gameplay. It was like having soup for every meal."

True, but the combat, enemy designs, artwork, and overall gameplay were oustanding.

"San Andreas had a TON of variation, but none of it was done well. They threw in everything but the kitchen sink, but most of it was broken. The combat interface was heavily flawed and left you often firing at walls. Simple processes like changing your clothing took forever. Girlfriends were somewhat amusing but a total waste of time. So was the gym. Honestly, should we reward a game that tries to make you spend two hours watching a guy on an exercise bike while hitting "X?" "

I wasn't too impressed with San Andreas in the early stages, but once I got out of the gangsta section of the game it got really interesting. And seriously, what other game out there has all that stuff in it? But yes aiming was seriously fucked.

"A great concept, a terrible plot, too many broken, useless time-wasters, terrible interface, and the damn problem of finishing a third then being told everything you'd done so far was useless and it was all taken away.
It was a fraction of the greatness of Vice City. They just spread themselves too thin."

It's not as good as Vice City, but it's still the biggest and the best overall game of 2004 in my opinion. And normally I dislike console games.

Game of the Year: San Andreas

Console Game of the Year: Same

PC Game of the Year: Doom 3 (though I'd like to see Painkiller up there)

But of course we all know HL2 is going to win for Best PC Game, even though it's completely undeserving of that award.

"I'm glad almost everyone agrees that Doom3 is a pile of shit. That shows the majority of gamers still value gameplay.

I thought I'd add another comment on this Doom3 tech demo - the models look stupid. I realize that doom had flaming eyeballs and demons, but they were presented in a lighthearted, satirical way. Doom3 has just silly shit slapped together and now it's supposed to scare you or shock you? Some of the worst models ever in a game and some with horribly low poly counts for such an advanced tech demo."

Wow, a truly thoughtful post there. Of course those lame, generic insults can be attributed to any shooter on the market today. You're just jumping on the bandwagon and spewing out a bunch of crap about a game that doesn't deserve half the flak it gets from gamers of today.

I'll be buying it.

Say what you want about Doom 3's singleplayer, as it's no better or worse than anything else out there at the moment...but the game had some kick-ass enemies and great combat, as well as some of the best artistry and style I've seen in an action game since the first Max Payne.

These days, it's all about presentation; there hasn't been an original shooter in years, with the exception of Postal 2, a game which mainstream gamers love to hate. Along with Battlefield 2, 2005 looks like it might be another good year for games.

It's about time we got a good multiplayer game, and Battlefield 2 looks like it might be a worthy successor to BF1942. Hopefully the tanks won't be so vulnerable to grenades, and the circle-strafing infantry battles will be handled better.

The point is that Half Life 2 fans act like a bunch of whiny 10-year-olds who can't accept criticism of any kind. I hate to break it to you, but everything that was in Half Life 2 has been done before, and better, in other games, more original games.

Take Postal 2 for instance; it got a lot of bad reviews by gamers and critics, but still became something of a cult hit. I can do things in Postal 2 that I can't do in any other first person shooter on the market. When pedestrians see you doing something weird, such as climbing telephone poles, they gather around in crowds and shout at you. You can use cats as silencers. All in one day you can invade a Taliban base, cause elephants to riot, and set a library on fire.

Half Life 2? Run to point A, shoot things, run to point B, shoot things, on and on. Repel the alien invasion all by yourself, Gordon. Oh, but I can plug stuff into walls! Truly brilliant game design, thank you Valve! I always wanted to do that.

Half Life 2 is good for 13-year-olds and people who have never played a first person shooter before. It's not so much a sequel or continuation of Half Life's story as it is a combination of elements that were invented by other game companies in far superior games. But go on and flame me, it doesn't matter. Half Life 2 is overrated no matter how you look at it.

When are the annoying Half Life fans going to stop pissing on every single other first person shooter and realize that their game wasn't all that great?

It cost $54 at EB, as well as most other retailers and online stores. The total came to about $58, which is way too much.

If programs like Steam are the future of gaming, then we're all fucked. It's hard to believe how so many sheep put up with it, especially since it's Valve basically saying "Fuck your performance and gaming experience, we need the program to protect our profit margin."

But anyway, Half Life 2 is the most overrated and overpriced game of the decade so far, so it's no wonder why so many people aren't willing to pay for it.

it seems like you still can't hit anything with a rifle unless you're 5 feet away from the target.
Looking forward to it anyway though.
