But I thought Doom3 sucked. Why? Because you were on a rail. Literally. Very few areas gave you room to move.

Pretty engine, terrible level design. Which is what I want more in a game - decent level design.
I respect that as a reason. I didn't like Jedi Knight 2 (or 1 for that matter) because I thought the graphics weren't that hot, though that could've been forgiven if they seemed to have any talent in making decent level design. But they didn't apparently. That's the one thing I fear for Quake 4 because Raven is developing that (as they did Jedi Knight 2). I don't think I've ever been very satisfied with a Raven game. I'm hoping they come through for me now =)
As far as Doom 3, yea, I didn't like the Zombie hiding in the closet behind you deal. I thought they could've been a little more creative and make it more "real".. whatever that means. Maybe they were just going for the original Doom feel. But as far as other aspects of level design, I thought they did an amazing job. The amount of detail they got into that little science station was astounding. I love playing just to look at it.
