I was running around with a tranquilizer gun in the Statue of Liberty without being able to hit a single damn thing. I did not enjoy it.
I plowed through, though, and fell in love. I got better weapons, I got more accurate, I never touched that tranq again, etc. I've played through thrice now, probably identically each time, but enjoyed each time.

There apparently is something called System Shock Portable, which is a "free" download (it's called abandonware, so hell, if you can find it, go for it.)
I actually even have my original System Shock box still. God I loved that game. (far more than I loved SS2, to be honest.)
