Tribes had ideas and gameplay that many games today struggle to duplicate much less surpass. It was a game far ahead of its time in gameplay.

On the contrary, it was a game exactly for its time. A time when hard games that required learning movement and prediction shooting were accepted. A game like that could not survive in today's environment of zero movement skill and all hitscan weapons.

Games have long stopped trying to "duplicate much less surpass" the aspects that made Tribes/Quake/UT great. Those aspects are too hard on the noobs.

Carver you fucking tool, did Unreal rape your inbred mother? I've witnessed your stupid little anti-UT jihad, but now you're spamming completely unrelated threads with that shit. Get lost.

I used to think that there was really no such thing as bad PR, and that games for the most part stood on their own.

Then came Hellgate London. I have never seen a game company screw up their PR as bad as these guys; it's comical to an extent, almost like they're doing it on purpose. When it was announced I thought it would be on of those ultra rare insta-buys for me, but it has now completely slipped off my anticipated titles list.

This news just killed off the very last remnants of my curiosity as I'm canceling the demo download at 42%.

Yeah, the game itself is amazing IMO, but the UI in general (menus, browser, scoreboard) are all horribly bad... ridiculous because they completely borked something that they already perfected like ten years ago.

I really hope they sort this stuff out, there isn't another fast FPS on the horizon from what I know.

Awesome, he's totally right that "A truly challenging strategy game portraying the Roman Era has yet to be released and we believe strategy gamers have been kept waiting for long enough".

I know this won't have the (at least theoretically awesome) Total War battles, but I don't even care anymore. Fuck em. I'm completely fed up with the TW series and its butt-stupid AI, buggy battle engines and a completely unrealistic representation of the eras in which the games take place. Half the reason I buy a game like that is to experience the historical romanticism if you will, and the TW games have completely failed me in that regard.

LOL sorry, but if you let a spy get close enough to you to see if there is collision between you and them...you are probably already dead.

Hmm? Only if you back into them, which would be dumb of course. Bump into them with a shoulder or as they're running past you (front), the knife is only good from the back.

Spy is one of my least played classes, the only reason they seem overpowered is because you get two points for a backstab, plus some points for taking out deployables. Thus spies end up with a lot of points, but less than half of those come from actual kills.

It forces all servers to have FF turned off. And you can't just shoot once or twice to make sure, you basically have to shoot every person enough that you would kill them.

Then making the game awkward is your trade off for making spies useless. You only need to shoot anyone with a single bullet to tell if they're on your team, since if they are not they will get hit (and not have your shot go through). Or you can just pay attention to whether there is a collision between you and them, and have more awareness in general.

One of the servers I play on has FF on, and it's not broken in the least IMO. I like it more than with FF off personally since spies are an actual threat when just unloading on everyone on the screen is no longer a solution. Have to use the brain a bit.

DrEvil, you don't like the game because you expected it to be similar to what you've no doubt played countless hours of, and I totally hear you. I'm the same way with UT200* vs the original UT, Tribes 2 vs Tribes, or even Quake 2 vs QuakeWorld.

Luckily for me, I somehow managed to avoid playing any version of TF before (too wrapped up in Quake/UT/RTCW), so to me it's all fresh. And from that point of view, this game is a-w-e-s-o-m-e. This is what a team based FPS should be.

They absolutely nailed the little things like the feel of the combat, interesting but clean maps, player visibility, engine performance, etc. Don't take any of these things for granted, there are very few multiplayer focused FPS games coming out and all of them are getting at least one of these wrong. Look at ETQW - uneven performance, can't distinguish classes, jerky combat feel. Just one example. TF2 gets the fundamentals right. I love it.

Maybe to you, but not to the rest of the world. UT2004 has a slightly higher Metacritic rating than UT, and I think it sold just as well (if not better).

Wake up please. UT had a VERY lively community, with ladders having over 100 active teams in CTF for years. UT200* has no community in north america. UT had 7000+ people playing at peak times, UT2004 (which counts BOTS as players for statistics) has never ever beat that; that's considering there was already a built in player base for UT2004, which there was none for UT.

And no, I don't have a link ready but original UT outsold UT2003 and UT2004 combined. Search for it.

P.S. Even if you grant that UT2004 is a decent game (which in my opinion it is not), I have yet to hear anyone argue that UT2003 and Unreal2 are anything but shit, so there goes the "epic can do no wrong" theory.

Actually, Unspoken Knight works for CA, so this is one of those unofficial things that they just didn't have time to include officially probably.

Also, I hate MTW2, but Kingdoms really IS good, to my great surprise.

It's been said many times that the reason for the long delay of EP2 is that they spent almost a year building multicore support into their engine.

Kinda funny how Newell was whining about the difficulty of development for multicore CPUs, yet they are going to be the first major game company to have significant support for it.

I am none too thrilled about the videos I have seen.. so yeah, I am admitting that I am going to "test" the game first.. and if the expansions are something I deem material that should've been in the game in the first place.. i'll acquire that via suspicious means as well.

I am not contributing to this greedmachine.

And where in this logic are you granted the right to pirate the game? If you don't like it so much, don't buy it. I hear Porsche's make > 10% profit margins. That's pretty damn greedy, you should go steal one.

So last night I finally ran this thing, and immediately realized that the default mouse sens is waaay too high. I lowered it down to 1 (just enough to do a 180 with one flick), but that made the mouse super slow in the menu system too?! Um, that needs to stay the same as in windows, or require two separate sensitivities. Then I noticed that there was something else going on as well. THE DREADED MOUSE SMOOTHING. So I open up the configINI file with notepad, find "ReduceMouseLag=True" and replace "True" with "False". Run Bioshock... "Windows has encountered an error". Game over, changing the file back has no effect, Bioshock won't run anymore.

Dude cranked out a fix in less than a day....and he's not even a developer.

And that's why he can do it. He doesn't have to go through QA to make sure the fix doesn't screw things up for anyone. If his fix kills the game for you, oh well, it's an "at your own risk" thing, but if 2k releases a fix that does that, there will be pitchforks out on the streets.

I've got a 24" WS and if this were a multiplayer game I'd be VERY unhappy. But given that this is SP, I'll take their word for it in good faith and play it "as it was intended".

I don't know about that sphinx. I don't find BF2 to be graphically a joke at all, in fact I think it's quite good in that regard. I also remember it ran silky smooth on an AMD64 /w 7800gtx. QW is jerky, even after an hour+ of com_unlock fps/timingmethod/etc tweaking, on a C2D /w 8800gtx. I understand the technical prowess of the game, I just don't think it translates very well into a good looking game; especially not at the performance price.

As far as what I don't like, it's two things. 1) inconsistent feel due to laggy and jerky engine (nothing to do with my setup/ISP) and 2) horrible vehicles that only detract from gameplay IMO.

I'm not trying to toot my horn, but my dislike for the game has nothing to do with my unwillingness to learn or adapt. I've been very good at FPS games for a long time, and that hasn't changed a bit in QW. The feel/vehicles is that kills it for me.

It kills me because I had higher hopes for this game than any other upcoming online shooter, but I've given up and this thing is off my drive now. It might well turn into the farce of the year looking at how few people are playing the beta. Tribes:V beta had more people playing it.

What is the logic behind the "if they delayed 6 months that actually means they need a year" statement? What if they had delayed it a year, does that mean they actually need two years? And what if they had said "we're releasing it tomorrow", does that mean it's good to go?

I never comment on such stories, but this is way out of line. I don't need this sack of shit to tell me that sunscreen isn't really protecting me from the sun. I have evidence that's very convincing of the opposite.

I need only 25 minutes under the sun during the peak hours (11am - 2pm) for my skin to start getting red, any more and I'm burnt for days. When I slap some sun block on, I can play out in the sun all frigging day and not have any redness on my skin after.

Wow, this guy is a big time douche.

It must be because I was young and impressionable, and/or because gaming was so new and fresh, but oh my god were games fun back then. And this is without rose glasses, I can definitively say that the emotional value I've attained from gaming throughout the whole 90's must be at least 100x what I've gotten from gaming since 00'.

That's the funny thing about psychology, once you've had something so good so consistently and for so long, it's hard to admit that it's just not the same anymore and quit. That's why I keep trying new games and keep getting disappointed. I think a lot of 'old school' gamers are in the same boat.
