I love Gauntlet... I always wanted an actual arcade machine. But I'll explain my problem with actually playing Gauntlet on any home system (including an of the newer 3D ones). Without the balance of using actual money to continue or add health, the game doesn't really work. If I can continue an unlimited amount of times, without having to worry about running out of quarters, the danger of the game is gone. I find that you just start barreling through monsters, where in the arcade you actually take your time and try to avoid being hit.

Disagree, I remember playing a Gauntlet type game with a friend on the TurboGrafx and it was quite enjoyable without having to dump quarters into it.

Blue, child in this instance isn't what you think it is. Song clearly uses the term woman also. Never crossed my mind that this was a pedo song, always came across as typical love song. Now the opening verse of Aqualung on the other hand.

Ahh the infinite Pi. That means that one can't actually mathematically calculate the circumference of a circle. Is it a sign telling us we got it all wrong? Back to base 6! Happy Pi day.

Not that it would make any difference, the game is broken when I stopped playing it. Half my cities were non-functional due to disappearing utility trucks and gigantic retardation-related traffic jams

Yeah that's what I heard from people playing, the simulation itself completely breaks down later on and it would only get worse with larger city sizes.

Absolutely, it is a mess. Never mind how long the offline mode should have taken or that, obviously, it should have been offline from day 0, this game is a mess and offline mode isn't going to change that. It may enable modding which in turn rescues it to some extent but there's no point. Anno, Tropico and SimCity 4 are all much better than this will ever be.

I played it again recently to see if the various patches have helped. They have, in particular with traffic, but the problems run too deep for patches to fix it. I've referred to it as SimSeveralSmallTowns in the past (with my trademark cutting satire surely shaming EA into rethinking their practises) because there's actually a decent builder until you get to what it claims is about 15,000 sims. I say "claims" because on the UI element which displays the population calls GetFudgedPopulation() - yes, really! - which fakes this exponentially. After this, the piss poor simulation can't seem to assign jobs properly or model things like education.

This is all made worse by the resource system. This is called City Specialisation and is supposed to make each city different but it has the opposite effect. Apart from the effectively cosmetic differences between the industries, every city is build around where these resources can be mined/drilled/etc - which is typically in the sort of flat, open area where one might want to build a city.

All this is why I quickly stopped caring about the city size. It's no exaggeration to say that the maps could be a quarter of the size they are now and without the city specialisation junk wasting prime space, the simulation would be maxed out.

Heh, one of many reasons I never touched this game. Simcity 4 never worked properly, AI couldn't get to work because of the traffic simulation, and they never fixed it. Probably because they had no idea how to, have to agree with people that Maxis can't code worth shit, well they can't code these kind of massive simulations at any rate. At least it was modifiable and the community figured out a way to at least make it work.

The Last of Us sounds like a great game, but what I will NEVER get is how in the hell a 30 year old woman is convincing/plausible actress as a 12 year old girl. It's effing ridiculous. Even in the video clips I've seen, it was horribly obvious.

Well I actually played the game and it wasn't obvious to me. Ellie seemed fine to me, but then again I don't hang around with tween girls so what do I know.

So now a game has to be released on ALL platforms to be considered a game? That's news to me.

I agree with many of the awards TLOU got, but GTA5 is GOTY. TLOU as good as it was had issues, it was very good but not perfect enough to beat GTA5... got to remember to DL Brothers while it's free.

I don't think developers consider a large install size a point of pride.

That's an insane amount of audio files, and on a game that doesn't even have a single player story? WTF? Does it come with commentary on every single line of code or is it all just padding so they can say look our game is 48GB!!!

Meh, I don't buy it, a lot of his doom and gloom examples were just horseshit. Irrational closing? Ya sure, shows how much he knows about the video game industry if he doesn't know why Irrational closed its doors. 2 things to consider. 1. The Wii 2. Last gen moved from SD to HD. How about sales numbers for GTA5, they broke through the previous ceiling. Console gaming seems as robust as ever to me. I have a huge collection of games for my PS3 so I'm in no rush to upgrade, but I will eventually.

EDIT oh and I forgot the single biggest thing that is about to go down, AFAIK. China allowing the console market in their country, that will be huge.

There's quite a bit of irony with your commentary and the signature that follows.

Why? Never said I don't like technology, definitely really like my video games. In fact my gaming totally represents my position. I've setup my PS3 to not automatically log in when I start it. I log in when I feel like logging in and almost never log in to play solo.

Games generally look better going forward through a consoles lifespan as things get optimized, for some reason a lot of people think the xb1 is gonna do the opposite.

Games also run up against resource limitations more as devs leverage the hardware which results in tradeoffs like what I already mentioned.

Unless you had the PS4 version and the XBox One version side by side on some large ass TVs that you were sitting unnaturally close to you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Like, not at all

Depends on the game really and what else was scaled down, its way too subjective to generalize. I can certainly tell the difference between AC4 on my PS4 and my buddys Xbox One. People who only have one console probably don't care either way but then again the internet is filled with comparisons so who knows *shrug*.

If you have an XBox One and a PS4 how often are you out there buying the same game for them though? Do the extra lines of resolution impact your enjoyment of the game in any way? If you owned an XBone and never saw the PS4 version of a game would you feel cheated in any way?

I have a PC capable of playing pretty much anything at some pretty insane resolutions. I also own a PS3. I own a small number of games on both platforms thanks to Steam sales and, as you might expect, the PC beats the PS3 in graphical fidelity hands down. But when I'm playing those games on the PS3 I'm not sitting around going, "Screw this 720p bullshit! 4K is sooooo much better! It makes the game soooo much more enjoyable!"

Absent the ability to directly compare two versions, it's not even an issue. That was my point.

I don;t know, I LOVE Uncharted, but every time I have played I have said to myself "Fuck, I wish this was on the PC so the textures weren't so damn grainy." Yes, graphical fidelity can impact your enjoyment.

I kind of agree, sorta, in a way. I've been distracted by jaggies on my PS3 and wished it was a little more crisp looking... but once I get 'into' the game, I typically no longer notice or care.

Wrong. The one thing Gearbox is great at is buying old IPs dirt cheap and then squezing them for all they are worth and usually wrecking them beyond all hope in the process.

Well only if your memory doesn't go back more then a couple of years. I personally enjoyed both Half-Life expansion packs and also enjoyed the Brother in Arms games I played. Add Borderlands to the resume, pretty damn good track record if you ask me... at least on stuff they have actually made themselves.

Playing through BL2 right now. Lovin' it. It's like BL on steroids. Great franchise.

BL on steroids about sums it up. I recently just finished BL2 and I swear at least three times I thought "this has got to the end" and the game just kept opening up more and more awesome levels. It should be called the 'energizer bunny game' because it just keeps going and going and going.

Well we know Valve has been working on Source 2. So I would think they will build their flagship game to showcase the new engine. I hope it's as revolutionary as Source was when it finally got showcased. I still remember the jaw dropping abilities of Source when it was shown way back in 04.
