good review over at ars

posting at blues that you're not buying it because of drm is pointless unless you're also emailing/calling activision or preferably writing a letter; you know, on paper The suits need to know that everyone isn't clueless.
Course, I've personally yet to let DRM stop me from buying games..

note jim is slippery enough not to post what country he's from, (which makes it difficult to counter his "arguments", because every country is evil in proportion to it's size and power), but given his hostility to the US, I imagine he's got some patriotic fervor lodged up his ass somewhere.

Remember, patriots: “Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all others because you were born in it.” - George Bernard Shaw

I'll admit that I haven't played either game (mostly because the idea of -partial- open world plus no skills that you can improve just sounds boring to me personally),

The games are, at the very least, unique. There's nothing else like them IMHO. If you're a FPS fan I think they'd be worth picking up if you find a deal on em. Not sure what I would compare them to. And you can get weapons/armor/ammo upgrades, decide what you want to do most of the time. Felt open ended to me.. And the atmosphere is well done, feels like you're "going to the Zone".

Yeah, once you pirate it to try before you buy, takes a strong will to stop playing, go out and and buy it, etc etc.

If pirates wanted to do game devs a favor, cut out 3/4 of the game and put the 1st quarter up on filesharing sites. "Unofficial demo version" or something. Otherwise, it's just an excuse.

Seconding Braid and World of Goo, both quite unique in the world of games, music, art, etc. Cool experiences. Wife liked World of Goo too, which was a surprise, though she hasn't tried Braid yet. Both run on my gimpy laptop which is a big plus.

Braid has me totally stumped on level 2, which is embarrassing, but it's cool you can traverse the whole game without having to actually beat every level. Cuts down on frustration. Kinda like taking a test, then going back to the ones you couldn't figure out the first time.

Far Cry, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, IL-2 1946, and Beyond Good and Evil for 9.99 on steam this weekend.

Dark Messiah was cheesy fun with good hand to hand combat for a FPS, had Thief designer consult on gameplay, so there's some similar stuff in there. Fun Game IMHO, after it got patched and fixed all the bugginess

If it's released only on Steam the release dates aren't broken, e.g. half life, left 4 dead.

Manufacturing means full copies are floating around before release, then they get cracked+distributed, steam doesn't make the full game public before release, so it can't get hacked.

Afterwords, different story.

I'm assuming custom executable means that one crack would work for one exe, so you'd have to make a different crack for each user. We'll see how long it takes for a steam-only game using this to get whacked.

Is the collection coming to steam?
Right now it has the gold edition, which is the second and third pieces of the trilogy. I'd like to get overture included as well.

Using the Novint Falcon with this game sounds pretty awesome:

Yeah me too. I have all of em around here somewhere. Thief 3 wasn't bad honestly, the lighting effects added to the gameplay, some great sound design and level design, though it didn't show for the first few levels. Having your house on "the street" was fun.

If you liked the thief games with quality swordplay, the Dark Messiah of Might and Magic designers were consulted by the main man behind the thief games, and it shows. I really enjoyed it, but I played it in it's fully patched state, e.g. Steam.

The older I get, the less I give a damn whether I can spend 90million hours on gameplay or not.
Also, I don't rush through the game, I'm always looking around for interesting stuff and backstory, and in FEAR 2 demo there's cool stuff to be found if you choose to look. It's not a racing game, its an experience.
Speaking of which, the ghost/spooky crazy stuff effects were badass, as was the opening with cinders falling from the sky. Freaking sweet.

I like games that are the right length. Like Portal. Short game, but one of my favorite game experiences from the last few years.
I'd take that over slogging through the same crap over and over.

this is exactly the kind of game that should be on Steam. It needs to be put in front of people, and that's what Steam does, plops a cool game in front of you and says buy it.
What's he gonna do, direct download? Make it happen developer man

I thought the same thing, anything related to that movie had to be underwhelming, but the game was damn good.
I played it on the PC, and the developer's commentary was interesting and at the time, quite unique. I don't think I'd seen commentary done before that.
90 at Metacritic, if you never played it and you're a FPS fan, pick it up! Its short and sweet

Like Stalker you mean? fwiw I liked Stalker; hope far cry 2 lives up to its promise. Weird that they'd abandon the CryEngine when the AI and open environments were the best part of it. Whatever..

that computer test was bs, but they shoulda figured it out.
They didn't mention whether the explanation posed by the "undercover" person was something like "I was fooling with the bios and broke something", or "I clicked my email and now it doesn't work".
Last thing I woulda checked would be bios settings. 99/100 people don't even know what it is, much less modify it. Shoulda realized the hd was still ok though. Thats hard to believe.
