Maybe its just me but I'm used to Q3A style (and many other FPS) auth / private servers. I don't get why they can't do something like id does where the client auths with a Blizzard master server and then after that who the hell cares what server they play on, the copy is legit (or at least the chance of it being legit is as good as current method). In some games the client displays the type of server the entire game (ie Leased, Official, 3rd party) this way there's no confusion and the company can say, if you're having issues on those unsupported servers come to ours where we can make everything peachy. (yeah, right)

Maybe on first run the server could do a system test and small bandwidth test then guestimate settings... Of course anyone with know how will tweak settings but simply not allowing any idiot to host a server means fewer servers which can be a bad thing.

Mozilla.org now offers FireFox 0.9.3. Thanks Enahs.

In other news, World War II ends with the surrender of Japan.

0.9.3 has been out for most of this month. The FTP file date is 8.4.04

The days when I sat around and pounded on my keyboard like a crackmonkey in order to get a beta key for a MMOG are long, long gone.
yeah... there was no pounding involved.

one form filled in did the trick.

I signed up last night and was told that the first pool of keys was gone. This morning I recieved an email with a link to my key. If you signed up just wait, your key will come sooner or later.

On Cat 4.9 performance

Hi.

The Catalyst 4.9 beta drivers are a sneak peak into future drivers that ATI is continuously working on. They were released mainly for the OpenGL component update, targeting improved Doom3 performance. Having said that, newer generations of hardware will get the most benefit from this driver (X800* series). While I haven't done specific benchmarks, X800 users can see performance increase of 5~30%, depending on the level and the system/hardware type. Regretfully, older hardware, such as 9700's and even 9800's will not get as much benefit. And if paired with a slower system (or with less memory) might see +/- performance improvements.

We are working very hard to get future drivers out that will add quite a bit to the performance of these.

Remember that these are Beta drivers, and so are unsupported. If you want stability and good speed, please stick with the release drivers. Cat 4.8 has not been skipped, and should arrive soon.

Thanks

btw-
If you're having artifact issues it is because you're not running at stock speeds (overclocked) and/or because of overheating. John Carmack has stated that overclocked cards may have problems.

Carmack:
A note on overclocking: it is very likely that overclocked configurations that "play everything else perfectly" will start to show problems on D3 due to new usage patterns. Everyone is of course free to do whatever they want with their own hardware, but don't complain to us...

edit: I've also read that some owners of stock 9800xt's had to underclock to get rid of the issues. Kinda weak.
