I think a 4-6 week open beta is too long to hope for. My guess is it's 1-2 weeks, probably starting on Nov 1st.

But that's why you can pre-load the game right now. I already have the game pre-loaded on my system (and it didn't cost anything). You do NOT have to pre-order the game to pre-LOAD it. You only need a valid steam ID (which is free). Then you can pre-order (or even wait and just purchase it online the day of release and then the pre-load will be unlocked.

IMO pre-loads aren't the issue. The traffic on the content servers != traffic on the authorization servers. They are different servers, as I'm sure you already know. I want to see what happens when all the HL2 users attempt to receive the required authorization to play the single player game at the same time. I expect it'll be similar to what already happened where people who were authorized prior to the authorization servers going down were able to play, while those that hadn't been authorized yet were SOL until the authorization servers were able to come back up. Remember, we're talking about a single player game here and I expect the number of 'online' users on "release" day to far exceed anything any MMORPG has had in the past. In other words, I guarantee you they are going to initially underestimate the required servers to authorize everyone.

Meh, I think I will wait for the gold announcement and let someone else play the guinea pig before I make the final decision.

Yeah, I don't see any advantage of pre-ordering via steam until the game is ready to download. If you're not able to purchase it on release day because of heavy traffic, you probably won't be able to play even if you've already paid for it :).

It's not like you're pre-ordering a box that's in limited quantity.

Hmm.. I thought the idea of pre-ordering a HL2 box was an obsolete concept, now that you have pre-loads and instant play after pay with steam.

This sounds more like a shot taken at VU. The hearing is this Friday.

You mean 'bald-faced' lie, not 'bold face' lie.

'Bold-faced' is for typography.

Actually, both are correct and are variations of the original, barefaced lie.

http://www.takeourword.com/arc_logi.html

My colleagues and I are having an argument about the phrase bald-faced lie. Some insist it should logically be bold-faced lie. Which is correct and where does the phrase originate?

The examples you cite are actually variations/corruptions of the original barefaced lie. Bare here means `brazen, bold.' However, in the 16th century, one source notes, barefaced meant `beardless,' a condition at that time considered bold to the point of audaciousness in adult men. So the metaphorical sense of `bold' perhaps came to be applied in barefaced lie. Based upon these two explanations, the variations bald-faced lie and bold-faced lie both make perfect sense.

Oh boy, it's about time we had a Derek Smart thread. Those HL2 threads were getting boring.

Who is the publisher for this one? I see "games-on-demand portals", but it does not look like there's a dreamcatcher replacement.

The downtime is much less than EQ. I doubt most people who played WoW for any length of time could stand going back to EQ.

Speaking of free mods.. I don't think Day of Defeat for HL2 is going to be free... even if you buy the CE.

October was nerfed from the calendar, hence the HL2 release date skip from Sept to Nov.

I agree the free bronze package is a good deal.

I had just got done reading the steam forums though . . .

apparently not everyone agrees. Imagine that.

Luckily, HL2 via STEAM isn't our only source of water. Because if it was we'd all be dead by now.

It looks like the only legal way is to order the collector's edition. In other words, pay 80 bucks... or if you had pre-ordered it from Walmart.. pay 60 bucks

Of course, you could download it from steam and burn all the cache files on a DVD :/.

Man, any way you look at it, there's no 'prime' package to get.

Yeah, and the sad part is you can pay $80 and still not get everything.

Is DoD:S just the same old free mod gameplay wise with new graphics, right? Except you'd need to pay for a steam subscription to get it now?
