Lol I wonder if the "Fuck Valve- I'm not buying it" crowd a) exist and, if they do, b) if they're willing to put all the BS thus far behind them and enjoy what is, IMO, the best FPS I have ever played.

Yes, they do exist and I'm sure they've been playing all day using the steam emulation hack that was mentioned. I guess they can have their cake and eat it too.

Yeah, steam is not punk rock. It's more like ticketmaster or ticket tron.

I think the fuss is about people who are trying to connect for the first time... now. You have your temp steam ticket.

So, after I unlock the fucking game, do I ever have to deal with Steam again?

I'm afraid so Bob. You get a temporary license to play, but it expires after a while. It is possible for the servers to go down and for this to happen all over again.

Cool, I just found my prediction post in repsonse to some pro-steam guy so now I can be an ass and get flamed for being a doom and gloom bitcher.

But that's why you can pre-load the game right now. I already have the game pre-loaded on my system (and it didn't cost anything). You do NOT have to pre-order the game to pre-LOAD it. You only need a valid steam ID (which is free). Then you can pre-order (or even wait and just purchase it online the day of release and then the pre-load will be unlocked.

IMO pre-loads aren't the issue. The traffic on the content servers != traffic on the authorization servers. They are different servers, as I'm sure you already know. I want to see what happens when all the HL2 users attempt to receive the required authorization to play the single player game at the same time. I expect it'll be similar to what already happened where people who were authorized prior to the authorization servers going down were able to play, while those that hadn't been authorized yet were SOL until the authorization servers were able to come back up. Remember, we're talking about a single player game here and I expect the number of 'online' users on "release" day to far exceed anything any MMORPG has had in the past. In other words, I guarantee you they are going to initially underestimate the required servers to authorize everyone.

FLAME AWAY !!!!!!

You'd think they would have given you poor souls a 2 day steam 'ticket' or something to alieviate this.. of course that assumes they knew this was coming. Doh.

Oh well, gamer riots are fun. Let's get a thousand post count in this thread.

The steam site could also be slow because of the million people trying to find out what the hell is going on with their $90 coaster.. assuming you even have a coaster. Maybe you have a hat. You think Valve was going to dodge what every single popular MMOG has had to deal with? Not today.

Edit: And the west coast people haven't even returned home yet.

You are just whining because you can't get your retail copy to work

nah, i knew this would happen so i haven't even bothered looking for a copy yet.

Meanwhile there's at least $89.95 worth of Entertainment Value here just reading the sqeals of anguish from the naive unwashed masses who actually expected the game they paid for to work on Day 0.

Yeah, I didn't buy yet either. Sucks to be right.. doesn't it? Naaah.. we still get to sit back, eat popcorn and watch the HL2 riots of 2004... aaaaahh.

Edit: Oh and.. but guys! Come on! Everyone has an internet connection these days that is reliable! You suck! Steam is great! What could go wrong?

hehe, all these problems with steam, while the pirates get a copy that works instantly. from pirate nfo
"This is the FINAL copy from STEAM, it emulates steam so you DO NOT NEED TO install steam, "

Quite funny.
Somehow I think most smart people predicted this.

There was just way too much benefit for the pirates to pass it up. Steam is now vapor. I guess I wasn't quite smart enough, because I predicted they'd have it cracked even before the release. Maybe they did. Oh well.

It's getting tougher to get steam stats from their web page:

http://www.steampowered.com/status/status.html

Keep adding to that max bandwidth Valve, you're gonna need it.
