1. slashdot post on alienware at 4ghz Sep 6, 2004, 11:30 sadef

keeleysam writes "c|net news.com is reporting that Alienware is going to ship a 4GHz desktop. The new Area-51 ALX, introduced on Friday, uses overclocking, or the practice of pushing a processor past its factory speed setting, to elevate a standard Intel Pentium 4 chip to 4GHz. Because overclocking a processor can cause it to overheat, the desktop also includes a special liquid-cooling system devised by Alienware. Purchasing the 4GHz Area-51 ALX desktop is an expensive proposition for most consumers, as the machine starts at about $4,200, according to pricing on Alienware's ALX Web site."

linux and a simple X11 console withall services off im sure you could make more use of your system for doom3. linux + X11 in 64mb of ram or less given that most of us have 1gb of ram that leaves 960mb, hmm be interesting.

News Comments > DOOM 3 Requirements
18. min specs Jul 20, 2004, 11:08 sadef

well i would think that if your a minimalist and run a striped version of linux with only an x server running you could run this game on a system with much lower specs, seeing how bloaty windows xp is these minimum requierments are probably the lowest system you could run doom3 on.

Doom3 is more dependant on the system's performance not gfx. - Posted by Anonymous -

It's just a big program and the system's processor and RAM is the weak area. If you choose any host equivalent to a AthlonXP 2100+ or a Pentium IV 2.4GHZ then you may choose any graphics accelerator and Doom3 will run fine.

Let's see here...
from a post on linuxgames.com

that means you can use a Matrox G400, 3Dfx Voodoo4 or Voodoo5, nVidia GeForce2 or TNT2, PowerVR Kyro, or anything greater.

Here follows a website URL containing many screenshots of Doom3 Alpha rendered on a 3Dfx Voodoo5 (single VSA100, equivalent to Voodoo4) upon a Athlon 2200+; http://www.doom3.zarovka.com/
