Someone at work today said it was kinda like the original except squished into an even shorter package, meaning the good and bad were both intensified in their own way. He said it was still head and shoulders above anything Red Orchestra, the last Medal of Honor expansion, or Hidden and Dangerous 2 have offered, though judging by H&D2 that's not saying much.

Nevertheless, I'll have to give the demo a try once it finishes downloading later this year.

Yeah, one of the reasons I liked CoD was its delivery and blend of setting and pace. If it's the same in this expansion it'll be a nice change from a host of FPS games I've played lately that have had too much filler between their memorable moments.

Hmm, all the review sites seem to be giving it good reviews so far. I might wait a little longer for some more, but it's all above average right now. Looks like a buy.

Liked the original, so I'll probably get this. I'm just glad I can get my money back for Doom 3 since expansions these days cost what a full product does.

As disgusting as it is, I think the FS community must more or less concede defeat. As much as the fans might hate to become just more groveling bootlickers before Mr. Smart (as some "FS fans" *cough* apparently did rather early in the flame war ), I think it's better they stow away their pride and zealousness to protect a franchise that has every right to be defended than risk several years worth of MODs and artistic work being erradicated because they couldn't refrain from dishing out the criticism. Note that I'm not saying everyone should simply acquiesce to the demands of a socially-challenged bully because fighting it takes work. I'm just saying sometimes you shouldn't risk so much for a Phyrric victory.

Go on and make FS3, Mr. Smart. Just don't ruin the community.

It'd be cool if Volition could pick it up again, but it's been years since they've joined THQ and nothing has happened. I remember somebody mentioned Totally Games in a post; they didn't do too bad with X-Wing Alliance so that'd be a cool choice too.

Hellbinder, that guy is nuts. Anyone who is a fan of a quality franchise like FreeSpace would react in a similar manner, I'm afraid. How would everyone like it if he announced he was going to buy the rights to Doom or Half-Life?
Granted, reactions on both sides were interestingly hostile, but with a reputation like Smart's I don't think many of the comments and much of the speculation so far has been unwarranted. So clam down. You don't have to read any of it if you feel ill. Go pretend to play king or something.

I've been reading his latest posts on AVault. I don't think Smart knows when to quit.

(page 4 of latest flame thread): http://forums.avault.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=005487;p=4

Interplay, or whoever, can redeem themselves by not selling the license to this guy.

"Let me assure you of one thing that you can go to sleep with tonite. I have FULL intentions of getting this license. If I DO get it, you and your teenny leetle friends on your Ferrous Oxide project, are effectively, shutdown because I don't piss around when it comes to IP properties. You would do well to ask around. I've sued publishers for less and I have attorneys around the world, literally on speed dial."

- Derek Smart, AVault Forums (locked thread)

Why can't he go screw with some other franchise? Does FreeSpace really need him?

I'm not too optimistic about some of the things this "alpha male", ahem, has said about the FS fan community either. The threat of legal action was particularly amusing, although probably not so for some of the MODders.

Frankly I'm dubious about Smart seriously buying up the license. Particularly given the sheer hostility such a decision is meeting right now. Plus if his game track record is anything to go by, I really do not want him defiling one of the great space sim/shooter accomplishments like FreeSpace.

Are those the same lawyers he tried to utilize to substantiate his fradulent PhD?

I get the feeling from post #59 that if Smart gets the FS license and makes the game, by the time we've loaded out our fighters with primary weapons, secondary weapons, tertiary weapons, life support systems, navigational arrays, subspace transmitters, backup thrust fusal flux junctions, and bathroom utilities, we could've played through Doom 3 or Half-Life 2 about five times, right?

I'd wish I could have given Derek Smart the benefit of the doubt, but with the way he basically stonewalled any of his detractors (most of whom are the most avid FreeSpace fans you can find) on AVault I wouldn't trust him with the rights to eXtreme Paintbrawl.

As of one minute ago, HLP (the FS2 community hub) just got the most users online ever, breaking the previous record which was established just an hour ago.

Browsing AVault right now it becomes apparent to me that Derek Smart has some rather curious "fans".

I sincerely hope that's just Smart blowing hot steam in regards to shutting down Ferrium. Heck, I hope he's blowing hot steam about even touching the rights to FreeSpace. The way he's pratically wrote off the entire FS2 community is repulsive.
