Obsolute BS. Find any list of the top rated games and you will see they sell well for at least an entire year, some like Half-Life will stay on the market for 5-10 years. The guy is arguing that today its worse than it was in the past? Has anybody seen any indication that is true? I haven't seen it, heck Spore the most pirated game out there is still selling massive copies of its retail version. (And its a pretty crappy game)

I know this is about games not politics, but I got an invitation to a Zogby online poll this morning (done them before). But the questions were so biased in their wording that after pages and pages of slander I eventually just gave up on the whole poll, couldn't bring myself to finish it.. I wonder if this effects polls, people giving up in frustration. Thinking about going back and entering the most ridicules answers I can.

I hate rushing/swarming too, I've always felt bad when I did it, and pissed when it was done to me. CARRIERS AWAY. Not sure how you could fix that without making the frustratingly obstinate.

The solution to that is fairly easy, setup some type of guard system between players, the guard system becomes weaker and weaker over time and can even be destroyed by someone willing to go out of their way, but it fairly powerful and destructive against an early rush unit.

This could be in the form of some type of NPCs scattered in no man lands. Bet a creative balance could be found between being silly and useful.

1) Give me a disc and a manual and a box.
2) Give me a key #.
3) Don't require the disc to be in the drive
4) Don't install any programs, drivers, services, files or secret bits unless I say ok, and I probably wont. So don't bother.
5) Don't require any other program or driver or service to be running when the game is ready to be launched.

No online auhentication every time the game loads, no limited installs, no phoning home (unless it is to auto-update), no blacklisted programs or services, NO ADVERTISING.

How would you feel about automatic key check only if you have an internet connection.
So assuming you are offline it doesn't authenticate, if you are online it checks to make sure no one else using your key is on at the exact same time. This would allow you unlimited installs with no worry, but you simply wouldn't share your cd key with your world or else you'd have to deal with the aggravation of your copy not working until you can authenticated. Automatic no need to call anybody reauthentication by simply running the game again online. If the servers get shut down it just assumes you are using an offline copy and you continue like normal. Essentially just a disincentive for copying keys.

I completely agree that if your dealing with an online or multiplayer game its fairly standard to make sure only one copy is playing at any one time. But in order to enforce this on single player content generally requires such convoluted schemes that it always seems to backfire. Someone buying one copy for their entire house is generally standard and if they all want the multiplayer together they will shell out for multiple copies. Attract the customers who will spend $5000 a year on multiple accounts

Despite only one account can connect at any one time and the actual amount of info sent to servers is very tiny.

Ok, I don't own a copy, but gonna answer anyways.
An account gets you an account on spore.com, it also lets you run the game.
With your one account you can create 3 universes which don't effect each other. BUT your account has only one accomplishments list, meaning once you complete an accomplishment its unlocked for all other universes as well.

These people just don't get it. US copyright law specifically states that publishers have no right to stop or profit from resale (assuming all copies are destroyed yada-yada-yada). The best these people can do legally is make your game a rental in the first place and declare it as so. At that point in time forget about charging $50 for the game, nobody is going to pay more than $20 for a rental, even if it says unlimited time rental.

Technically Windows XP and Vista has DRM and I've reinstalled XP so many times that I typically have to call and re-get my code, but my only complaint with that is the people I have to talk to don't speak english as a first language. But I don't see legions of people bitching about it.

The issue is Microsoft has a policy that allows you to call in to request extra activations, and they are fairly forgiving about it. While many people will tell you that EA and similar companies are not forgiving about additional activations for their games. Most of the time they will just tell you go buy the game again, (you filthy pirate).

@Beamer: Wish I could find it, some interview a little while back about how the space age now has an almost Zelda type RPG build into it. Probably not much "replay" value there but in terms of hours of play it could be interesting. Though that probably also means the universe is a lot less random than initially panned. Randomness means real life though, real life is boring
