Viacom Inc., whose MTV division owns the rights to the Rock Band franchise, said last month that sales of Rock Band 2 were lower than it had hoped and cut into the company's profit.

Music games are "certainly losing steam," said Evan Wilson, senior research analyst at Pacific Crest Securities. "This year will establish the direction that this genre will go. Maybe it continues to take off. Maybe it tops out at 15% of the software market. Or it could just turn out to be a fad. I think the latter two scenarios are most likely."

It didn't "cut into the companies profits" it cut into the expected profits, BIG difference honestly. And 15%!?? You have 15% of the software market is your crying that its not higher. OMGWTFBBQ

Thats just plain odd. Either way play the single player game if your not into the whole team thing. Its pretty good on Normal and decent on Advanced, unfortunately the bots on your team just get stupid on Expert, they can't handle the pace.

I remember all the games that came out around the time of windows 95 were Dos based (even the graphical ones like quake).
The games that came out for Windows 98 were greater than 50% Dos based.
When XP came out the majority of games supported 98 till well after ME came out. XP didn't become standard until 2003 at least.
Once Windows 7 takes a good foothold you will start to see Vista minimum specs be more common, not before.

Admit it, its boring and repetitive. Why did you even bring it up?

Are you sure? Quake 3 would play on sub 1Ghz machines easily, it only needed the most primitive 3d cards.

Your girlfriend uses a sub 1Ghz machine and you haven't bought her a new one? You should be ashamed..

Single player games offer things that multiplayer will never be able to.
1) Isolation, sometimes people just want to be left alone.
2) Plausibility, pick up and put down at will. Multiplayer is a commitment, there are a few multiplayer games you can pickup and put down at will, casual MMOs for example. But for the most part there is a committment factor.

The rise in popularity of "casual" gaming shows the importance of both these factors, sometimes I just want to play with myself..

- A game is in infinite stock and has no reproduction cost therefore you can sell infinite amounts.
- Theres potentially 2.5 billion customers
- Your game reaches only 1 million for 60$ price
- Your game could reach 14 million for 15$ price
- Your game could reach ~240 million (In the EU/USA/JAPAN/CANADA) for 2.50$ price

Now i leave it to you to come to the result which one of the 3 scenarios nets you more profit. ^^

But there has got to be a ceiling there of budget and time.
Left 4 Dead for example, lets say your theoretical 240 million worldwide who would buy the game at $2.50. Its a fairly short game by comparison but even still it could easily satisfy someone for 2 weeks where they won't buy anything else. They might have the money to buy something else but whats the point, they are busy playing L4D. So if everyone dropped their prices people would be busy playing other games. So that total gaming market at that point wouldn't be limited by the budget of the gamers it would be limited by the playing time of the gamers, thus there would be encouragement to make smaller games to increase turn around... I know $50 may be too high but you can see how 2.50 would be too low.

Ok, bit of a pickle. I really want to buy this game now.. BUT I have an Nvidia 5250, obviously it won't play the game (well it does have pixel shader 2.0 and meets the technical requirements, but would be slow as balls)
Anyways I just have PCI slots. Any suggestions on a PCI card that would play semi newer games (no problem with running at low res)?

The main problem with the death star calculations is this "Shipping that to space will cost $95 million per tonne"

Current per tonne lift cost and Star Wars per ton lift cost aren't even remotely equal, probably closer to current rail cost.

If they were smart they would release the editor for free and just make you pay for the expansion if you wanted to play anything but your own edited files, or something like that. Let anyone create "adventures" I think it would take off like the creature creator did.

Remember this did work for Spore which sold their Content Creator well before the game. But that was a unique case that few games could duplicate.

Is this the patch that makes the game fun...

But seriously its nice to hear EA talk about listing to user feedback, technically they are probably listening to feedback from the masses who like Sims X electric boogolo. But honestly I can't say this is a bad thing, its just the market are work. Right now economically EA is being forced to listen to the market, but if the market tells it to produce Sims X it will, I just hope they find some room in there for the original spore promise, sadly there isn't much money to be made there, though the store creator sounds awesome.

I wonder what kind of piracy rate a non DRM game priced at $5 that was a AAA class game would see. If it had a near 0 piracy (doubtful) and sold 10 times as much as a game with a 90% piracy rate they would make more money in total. Though support cost would go up specially for online features. Either way in the current economy $50-$60 is a lot.

Yea, this is why I think Valve could make very good money if they added a Rental model to their system. Want to try out the full game, no demo whatsoever for 3 days of unlimited play, just $5. Would this work for all games? Probably not, but the typical Valve game can be used for a long time. I know that I would rent many games this way as I simply don't have the time to play games much (paid for the orange box, spent a total of maybe 20 hours on the game in the year I've had it, mostly play casual games online) and occasionally have a free weekend of downtime in which I go to blockbuster and rent a game for our Wii (of which most title suck).

If you had read you'd see its a browser based MMO based upon Zork. Doubt its fully text based but probably partially text based. They said laptop, desktop or iPhone.

Technically if it will 3D any rendered game this will be pretty cool. But yea expensive right now, but you know hardcore gamers have no problem dropping hundreds of something like this, problem is right now average Joe can't afford much.
