From the actual game play I've seen on youtube, it's still looking really, really good. The squad limit thing worries me though. Makes me think it won't be nearly as brutal as the original and part of the fun was the sense of dread when losing soldiers. I just hope they don't cupcake it up too much for the console kiddies.

Having a game kick your ass from time to time is NOT a bad thing.

I just want to see an MMO that does not use the Wow Formula. Design your own combat systems. Design your own skill systems. Stop making every MMO exactly the same game with a different skin on it.

Say what you will about Asheron's Call and Everquest, but at least in that era there was a clear distinction between the games.

Yep. Everyone is trying to make a million+ subscriber blockbuster instead of trying to make something cool and unique. You can't make an MMO with a large (by today's standards) subscriber base without watering your shit down to appeal to the casual and the incompetent. If companies were to create more specialized MMO experiences I think they'd find they could get 300-400k extremely loyal subscribers without spending $200 million to develop the thing.

SWTOR is the shining example of how even with 6 years of development, fucktons of money, and an IP a thousand times more popular than Azeroth, making a WoW clone isn't going to be that successful. People who are tired of WoW don't want to play it again, and people who aren't tired of WoW are content to keep playing it. There is no huge market for "WoW, but slightly different."

Hit the nail on the head.

It's like somebody said, "Lets copy a slowly dying formula, but not make it as good, add some voice acting and pray nobody will notice it's an old, outdated, overplayed, boring concept."

I played and did get several months of enjoyment out of it. Star Wars alone took the game that far for me. Then WoW boredom set in and I cancelled. I won't buy another WoW/EQ clone again, no matter what the setting is.

Oh, and now it looks like TES is doing the same thing! W...T...F

Ugh. After seeing this in yesterdays thread, I'm even more disappointed.

When I cancelled my SWTOR account, a survey popped up asking why. After writing the numerous reasons basically stating "boredom" I finished with, "WoW burnout has caused me to cancel my SWTOR subscription." I actually ENJOYED both games. Played WoW for years. SWTOR for 4 months. But that game style is just so dead. At least for a game that will want you to play for a long stretch of time.

Please, puh-lease no more packs of 4 mobs standing in a cluster by the side of the road waiting to be killed, while their buddies are slaughtered 10 feet away but just outside of aggro range.

Please no more "dailies." Please no more follow me around a corner over a rock under a river long range attacks. I don't want the perfect PvP/PVE balance attempts and class homogenization. Just... don't do WoW/SWTOR again. It's so damn dead assed boring now.

Give me some reasons to explore, some depth and challenge to crafting, mobs that do something other then just wait for you to get in range. Basically make the world a living, interacting place I'll enjoy running out and getting lost in.

Wow. Mouse and keyboard controls are too hard? Even indie games get that right. I just have to laugh at these guys.

This stuff was long ago standardized in DirectInput to boot, not supporting it means going out of your way to only use XInput which is essentially pissing on the title. It is pretty trivial to do both - include the silly artwork for prompts and writing some changes to a config file for keybinds is all trivial stuff. This is just extreme laziness, if they won't bother with this very very basic porting stuff then people should have zero confidence in the rest of the port and treat it accordingly at sale time.

Wow. Just wow. "We love PC." Uhh, ya. Don't insult us Alex.

I'm still enjoying it. I'm in a pretty fun guild that are just now working though hard mode end game content. As usual with these games, a good guild will really give the game an extended life.

I still don't think I'll be playing for more then another 6 months tops though. Not from this being a bad game (I think they did a good job and are working on making it much better... take it over WoW any day), but from MMORPG burnout. Too much of the same 'ole, same 'ole.

The leveling process has already grown stale. Yes each class does have it's own story, and yes they are very well done, but the side quests and locations are all the same for everybody. So you run one original story quest and then 3 of the quests you already ran on your main. Now level another alt? Boring. Same thing happened to me in WoW. Just couldn't stomach logging in to do the same thing over and over. But that's a MMORPG past the first few months. Repetition.

I'm running a q9550/gtx280 and am wondering if I can pick up one of the mid range cards like these to stretch out the life of my PC until the new series of consoles hits, game requirements rise, and I do another full system upgrade. I just don't know if the q9550 will bottleneck me too much. Running at 1920x1200.

I run a Phenom II X4 955, which I don't think is much (any?) faster than the q9550, and a Radeon 6870. The Radeon 7850 is a bit faster than the 6870. I feel that my video card is still usually my bottleneck at 1920x1200, so I think a new card would work pretty well for you.

Edit: Just checked some benches. Your q9550 would be a bit faster than my 955, so I'll say that a new card would pretty definitely give you a nice bump.

Thanks for the info mag. I'm gonna wait to see what Nvidia has coming in the next few weeks, then pick one of the better cards up and see how long I can make this system last.

Indeed.
Now just give me a memorial where I can look at former soldiers. I want to see names, missions, charts showing their improvement, how they died, what dates they lasted for, average stat for a new recruit, average stat for a current soldier, average stat for a lost soldier, average lifespan, etc.

Love that idea! Go put that on their official forums man.

I've been having a good time with the game. The storyline of my character was good, leveling was fine, the group content is done well. I've found a casual raiding guild that is just now starting hard mode raids. As usual, a good guild can really add legs to a game like this. And I'm somebody that was suffering from WoW burnout. So it's been nice to get back into the MMO genre ... for awhile.

Problem is, a few months in, I can already tell there is no way I'll be playing for years like I did with WoW. The game is just too much of the same. Six months maybe. Even with new content I imagine many of us will have had our fill. There's just not enough depth. I never played SWG but from what I've read... man, if somebody could tweak that formula and make it work. More sandbox I guess.

This doesn't make SWTOR bad. I have no issues with paying for the game and a sub now. I'm getting my dollars worth. But I would imagine they want to keep me for a loooong time, and with this model of game, it just won't happen. WoW did for many people because it was a new experience in total for a huge amount of the player base. I still remember being actually nervous about taking my character over the next hill, or into that unexplored cave. That doesn't happen to anybody anymore. Everything just becomes so much of the same 'ole same 'ole.

I'm really looking forward to GW2. Something really new to sink my teeth into.

I'm playing a level 46 merc healer and am still having a great time with the game... which is actually very surprising for me. I was sure MMO burnout wouldn't let me play another WoW clone and thought my next shot at having MMO type of fun would be with GW2 as it seems to be quite a bit different.

I'm still worried about end game though. Once the KOTOR3 part of the game is over (the leveling process that is), will the end game keep my attention enough to keep up a sub? Dunno. I do plan on leveling several alts though as the story/leveling process has been fun.

We'll see. If you're into MMO's at all, and even if you're burned out on them, at least give it a shot. It's worth leveling at least one character.

At this point I'm really enjoying the game, and I really thought I'd hate it. The MMO burnout thing had set in. Maybe it's the single player aspect or just new areas... I dunno. What I do know is I'm enjoying logging in, playing both my story and the grouping. I'm also looking forward to playing a few alts on both factions.

There are bugs, and some issues that I'll either have to adapt to or give up on (ability delay), but it's early.

Of course, end game will be what keeps me subscribing for long periods. We'll see.

Well done so far.

The fact that I can still play this game today and really enjoy it shows how great it was. For me anyway. I can't wait for this one to hit! Hopefully I'll be finished with Skyrim and the upcoming DLCs before the release. Too little time for all this gaming goodness.

Anybody know how open this world is? I was a little (lot) disappointed in some of the beginning areas of SWTOR. The space felt very confined. I understand they do this to properly push the story aspect but I'm just a fan of big, open worlds to explore (loving Skyrim). WoW initially gave me this "big world to explore" feeling.

And ya, I'm aware that SWTOR does get "bigger" as you level.

Skyrim is the best game I've played in many, many years. Sure I have my gripes (UI, scaled loot, inventory management in general... come on mannequin/grid mod!), but nothing that keeps me from enjoying this game a ton.

Congrats to them on their award and all the awards coming their way.

Now next time just employ a small team to do the UI/inventory for the PC and you'll be declared saints.

Scotch... went through a bottle of Glenmorangie 18yo and a friends left over Johnny Walker Blue. Loved the Glen, was not at all impressed with the Blue. I swear it's one of my least favorite scotches I've tried. Can't figure out the price on that one. I wouldn't pay $15 let alone $200 for the bottle.
