John Carmack hasn't been involved in a 'good' game since the 90's, and they weren't good enough that I'd ever want to play them again either. Doom & Quake were completely superseded by Half Life, NOLF, Deus Ex pretty quickly, while Doom 3 confirmed he/id didn't have anything new to contribute.

I saw my BG 1 & 2 discs and my Icewind Dale instruction manual when I moved this year, but I can't remember if I packed them or tossed 'em. I'm torn between wanting a digital copy and not ever wanting to play them again so my memories aren't spoiled. I guess they could stay eternally uninstalled, like half my steam games.

What have you done for me lately? Why not try making some new, good, D&D games once again?

Be careful what you wish for. I'm just happy they're not announcing Baldur's Gate Online with human and orc faction locked in permanent war. Now with voice acted quests, a level cap of 80, and lifetime subs for only $200!

Oh look, another dying MMO! I'd be happy if developers would learn something from all of them, but they just keep making more WoWclones so apparently not.

It's sad seeing what EQ turned into. In the beginning it was a unique game and full of people, but when I tried the EQII trial it was just a wasteland. Even the capitol cities were ghost towns with less than 10 characters standing around.

Putting everyone on one server would help, but the killer was the high level cap and raising it continually. Wasting time and money on hundreds of zones that would be empty and useless in a few months is a staple of MMO developer stupidity.

I never had a crash with Oblivion. What I did have was a bad game that no mod or patch was ever going to fix. I doubt I used 10 mods for Morrowind. The only ones I remember were readable signposts, and someone added textures to rings, lockpicks, and probes. Most of the mods were horrendous - naked slave girls with 'romance' quests, hundreds of Balmora houses, and cheat items with LOTR names placed in Seyda Neen.

I don't see how Warcraft getting stale will finally make WoWclones become successful. If people are becoming tired of the same horrid gameplay, then offering the same horrid gameplay with a new skin isn't likely to help.

Since I'd already decided not to use Origin for any reason this won't affect me directly, but I appreciate EA working so hard to justify my decision.

The quality of Telltale games are so uneven that I won't even consider this until it's around $10.

Meh. Nothing really out of the ordinary, it's rare but it happens. Just remember that the first few founding years that the settlers landed and started setting up along the east coast, the winters were so severe that 10ft snows for the winter and 90% of the population being wiped out was pretty common.

I have no idea what point you're trying to make. Last winter was horrendous after the previous winters were worse than usual. I moved away. This winter hasn't even started yet and my former house will already be without power for an extended period. I'm glad I moved.

What killed Oblivion for me was the leveled monsters & loot, and effectively moving thief skills from the character to the player. Unless they're changing this, I'm not likely to appreciate whatever else they claim to be fixing.

In Morrowind I really enjoyed picking the low hanging fruit with a character that had weak combat skills. That wasn't an option in Oblivion. There was no low hanging fruit and non-combat skills were mostly useless thanks to thief skills being redundant and infinite mana. The character choices were reduced to "swords or fireballs". Or click the invisibility button for 'stealth'. The story and gameworld being bland by Bethesda standards didn't help either, but Skyrim has a lot of work to do if they want to live up to their earlier games.

The last 2 winters in the northeast were bad, but reading about 19 inches of snow in NJ before Halloween is absolutely mindboggling. Makes me very happy I moved south.

I wish at least some of the horrible developers endlessly churning out doomed WoWclones would go back to copying other Blizzard games. I'd love to scratch my Diablo itch, but there's not even 2nd rate alternatives on the market anymore. Titan Quest & Torchlight were the last 2 clones, and they weren't good enough for different reasons.

So could some of the mongoloids responsible for wasting billions on LOTRO/Warhammer/Conan/TOR spend a few million on a mediocre Diablo clone instead? It's not actually guaranteed to fail since there is zero competition until Diablo 3 arrives. Even afterward, there's probably room for a 2nd Diablo type game. There's no room for a 759th WoWclone though, so please stop making those.

Leveling + treasure hunting + pvp = garbage. It always devolves into high level characters with high end gear going after new players to pad their stats. Guild Wars fixed this by effectively removing leveling and treasure hunting. You can create a PVP character at the nominal level cap, and PVE characters can buy the same gear everyone else has from merchants in town.

Instead of mindless farming determining the winner, 'skill' in Guild Wars PVP came from how you constructed your 8 card deck. Did you see endless condition spamming in recent matches? Pure elemental damage? Hordes of knockdown warriors? There's a counter for everything, but trying to actually counter everything will leave you too unfocused to do much. Plan well and you win easily, while poor planning makes victory nearly impossible. GW2 is unfortunately moving away from this by adding some leveling & treasure hunting, but it still can't be worse than more WoWclone PVP.

Or they knew what the best RPG possible atm could be and desperately tried to make the game. Knowing they were on the right track and could have pulled it off.

However due to the Absolute Fucking Nightmare of trying to Trouble Shoot the most complex game of choices and consequences at the time the publisher didn't get it. They forced the game out early, losing Massive sales and Game Awards.

This turned out to be a proven fact in time, for ALL their games. Especially since each of their games were so loved by the community Unofficial Patches were created by fans, trying to complete the master pieces.

An extra month or two in the oven wouldn't have fixed Bloodlines. It took months for the munchkin patches to fix the scripting errors (before they just started moving items around and introducing their own scripting errors) and everything past Chinatown was a horrendous corridor shooter lacking stealth or dialogue options. They would've needed to redo the last 20% of the game to fix that. Arcanum had enough ideas for 2 or 3 games but actual finished content? Horrifically dated engine that crashed alot and a huge mostly empty world of lifeless characters. Shudder. It would've taken years to make that into whatever they were planning it to be.

Even if the publishers gave them another 6+ months and another pile of money, they probably would've just added another mission hub, more broken quests, and unbalanced powers & backgrounds. Nothing they released shows they had the ability to polish the content they had instead of adding more unfinished ideas.

As much as I liked Troika, their products were all released in poor condition and I don't think an extra couple months would've helped very much. They were overly ambitious and tried to squeeze far too much buggy, unfinished content into their games. Arcanum could probably have lost 1/3 of the game world without anyone noticing.

Even after a zillion patches, clicking buy in a store could still crash Daggerfall. The randomly generated dungeons meant wasting hours looking for some object/monster before realizing it spawned inside a wall and you'd have to reload from before accepting the quest, etc. Morrowind was pure joy compared to that. I remember some scripting issues with certain quest choices and I would CTD periodically if I tried levitating across the island with a massive speed boost, but hardware upgrade fixed the latter. Oblivion was stable and I never experienced even a moderate bug - blocking quest or title progression - but I never finished it either so perhaps there were issues lurking elsewhere.

I still refuse to think about Skyrim until I see positive feedback from people who loved Morrowind. Oblivion was just a soul crushing disappointment.

I haven't bought FM since 2010, but I'm still playing it so I'm not sure if that qualifies as a break. The "agent" feature in 2011 just seemed like an another layer of joyless complexity in an already complex game.
