Space Captain,

I've heard the complaint about buildings you can walk through and I never understood the issue.

A: There are buildings you can stand on, I've done it.

B: I think it's a random thing.

C: How many times in real life do you attempt to walk through a building to see if it's solid? (maybe that's your problem)

All I can say about 3000AD games is you have to stick with it, I did and I've been rewarded with the deepest gaming experience ever (and I've been around since the original days of pong.) Actually "game" is the wrong term, it really is a sim which might also be why fans of twitch style space sims don't like it.

Oh well, to each his own.

Derek, is that you again??

Well, much as I've liked following the Smart wars over the years, I think it may be on its last legs. Looks like no more publishers want the property. In a way, its actually quite sad. Derek is an absolute prick at times, but he does have balls. I've enjoyed spectating his numerous fights with publishers, and laughing about his games. I hope this isn't the end actually.

Nothing much recently: he's just really funny to read, and sometimes requires a bit of goading to get him to post.

Obligatory site for those who don't know enough of DS's past:

"I don't pretend to understand all this animosity towards Derek Smart and I pay no heed to acknowledge the proclaimation of his arrogance. Sure, he may have some alterior motive going on here but, the way I see it, this move only makes the man all the more generous in my eyes, particularly in today's age where the little guy gets swallowed up by corporate conglomerates such as EA.

As for the game itself, I'm looking forward to trying this game out as I tend to enjoy complex non-linear titles since I care very little for today's "modern" titles with all their loud explosions and mindless clutter.
"

Derek?

I'd expect a lawsuit ATI vs Valve. ATI's deal was with them, not VUG.

Lombardi, time to get the vaseline out. Its going to be a long drawn-out ride.

I personally have no problem with a game company shipping late. Thats just about normal. It'll happen. Target dates are often just a wish in some marketting person's eye.

However, continually stating that it will make that date right til the last minute, in return for some clearly earned moolah, is wrong. Taking loyal customers along on that ride is wrong.

FWIW I hope they don't fail. I hope HL2 is great. I hope they make stacks of cash. I also hope they get the message LOUD AND CLEAR that bullshitting customers for money (abeit indirectly) is not good.

If you were truly dumb enough to actually buy the 9800 for a game that wasn't even released, you deserved to be taken.

who was taken? From what I hear the graphics requirements are the same as when it was first announced and the Radeon 9800 pro (and NP) are ONE of the most solid all-around graphics cards ever made... and its still being sold/bought.

I'm not saying it was a smart move for people to buy a vid card soley on the immenince of a game but its hardly a waste of cash either.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
What Would Fred Do?

Dumb or not, I did get taken. Valve lied about the release date. They probably had a royalty deal with ATI, or maybe even a flat rate deal. Who cares which. Point is they KNEW they wouldn't make the September date by at least six months, with or without the code leak. But they kept stating they would. What they pulled was pretty dirty, to make some short term cash to top up their petty cash kitty for the last development stage. In the meantime, now my card has aged. I am getting less value for it as the game I really wanted to play was HL2. So I'll be able to play HL2. Will I be able to play next years games? Not as well as the guy who is buying an X800 now for the same cash I dished on the 9800.
Hence, value lost. Thanks valve.

No, the major fact why gamers are pissed is that Valve lied. Not out of ignorance. Not "by mistake". They lied. They wanted to get some hype juice flowing, and they wanted to make money off a deal with ATI. But the worst is, they continued lying up to a week before Sept 30. Lombardi was STILL saying about a week before that, that it would be released.

So, now you say: "Big deal. They lied. Get over it."

Except its not that simple. They lied AND COST ME MONEY. I bought a 9800pro the week before, thanks to that dickhead Lombardi. Thanks for leaving me with carrying what was then a VERY expensive card, which now to all intents and purposes, is nearly reaching budget prices. And no, I don't play a lot of games, so I didn't get much value out of it at all in the last year.

So my response to this announcement is:
"STFU Lombardi. Deliver the game. Deliver on the hype. And deliver me my $200 price difference on the card."

Ah, the banality and narcissism of it. The endless list of links down on the rightside frame. The acres of space in the centre frame (whats the matter Smart, nothing to say??). The empty calendar (clearly reflecting his social life, which apparently stopped in August 2003)

SmartSpeak. Empty of course.

The *fantastic* pictures, featuring the Great Taco and some toadies, and a car he hired and photoshopped 3000AD onto the plate.

The "unavailable" forum. Heh.
