Is "BAN ALL THE GUNS" really a point people routinely bring up, though? I keep seeing it from people who think it's being brought up, and maybe that's just what I'm paying attention to, but I've really never seen anyone say "ban pistols and hunting rifles."

The discussion right now seems to be "ban AR-15s" followed by "fascist!"

Yes, unfortunately. I have been seeing it with some regularity on Facebook with the exact polar opposite coming from other contacts on Facebook, that's why I mentioned it.

This isn't about mental health. This isn't about gunslinging teachers. This is about guns. Period.

It's about the insane amount of military-grade weaponry in private hands that can be purchased with astonishing ease.

Bingo.

We seem to be sitting between two equally loud and equally obnoxious points of view. Namely: "BAN ALL THE GUNS" and "MY M249 WITH GRENADE LAUNCHER IS A CONSTITUTIONALLY PROTECTED RIGHT". I am neither a fan nor a proponent of either. Rather, I am for the ban of some types of firearms while not wholly restricting the ownership of all firearms. There is no logical, justifiable reason that your average civilian has to own something like an AR-15 (or its derivatives) that has either been modified to be fully automatic or has a bump stock to provide a more rapid rate of fire. Additionally, there is no defensible reason to have a 30 round magazine. I would go further to say that there is no logical reason to own an assault style rifle or machine pistol at all. It isn't designed to go hunting with and if a person says they do then I assume one of two things to be true: they are either a really, really shitty shot and need more range time with a qualified instructor or they're lying to excuse their fetishization of firearms. However, if you want to own a 10/44 or a P89? Have at and enjoy your time at the range with it. As for mandatory registration, I am somewhat hesitant on the idea because I do not, for a single second, trust our government. I do not believe that a government that is bought and paid for by special interest groups and lobbyists is going to perform their duties with the best interests of the public at large in mind. Instead, I am fully onboard with restrictions on who can own a firearm legally including those with histories of domestic violence or incidents of violence against others, and I am onboard with requiring licensing and mandatory safety and proficiency qualifications.

It is very clear that we have a problem with violence in our country that is both unchecked and willfully ignored. This, too, must be addressed and we have to be honest with ourselves to do it. It cannot be a political resolution because of the divisiveness, hypocrisy, and dishonest nature of both political parties. Instead, this is something we have to address as a culture and as people. Unfortunately, I have little faith that will happen as most people are far too entrenched in their ideologies and self-created tribes to see just how much ignoring everything that isn't their ideology and everyone who isn't in their tribe harms them in the long run.

I am reluctant to end this on a down note but I am nothing if not a realist. Nothing will change as long as people continue to scream at one another, react emotionally and blindly, and continue to play the blame game without objectively looking at the problem and honestly addressing it.

Got both OS and BIOS fixes since day one of release, never had any issue. Guess I got lucky.

You did. Intel isn't releasing BIOS updates for their own motherboards outside of a very narrow, select range.

Yeah, it would be damn tough to recode the entire mechanics systems for RTMs and loot boxes.

Dell Optiplex 790's and 7010 series of Pcs all suffer from this. An those PCs are not that old, about 4 years old.

I can't speak for the 790s but the 7010s have no problem running Win10 Enterprise. We just went through a six month validation program that covered the 7050s to the 7010s. For the 7010 drivers, the few that don't come bundled in build 1709, just snag the Dell driver cab and they're in there.

I'm not sure this is entirely true. From what I recall, early dev diaries for the patch and DLC talked about two soon-to-disappear (unless you use Steam's beta feature) FTL systems were getting tossed because it would allow the rest of the game's development to progress meaningfully.

Based on the feedback they received on /r/Stellaris and the Paradox forums. One of the major gripes was lack of strategy on the galactic map and the inability to create and hold chokepoints. Wiz addressed this in a tweet a bit ago, IIRC.

See, I don't get that sentiment AT ALL. What exactly is "awesome" about a piecemeal delivery? What is awesome about getting game mechanics delivered YEARS later that should have been (and were most likely planned to be) in the game from the start?

Because they weren't and, instead, are the direct result of player feedback. The new Cherryh update that completely revamps the galaxy map and how traversing that map works? We, the players, largely asked for it. Unless you forced the game to only allow hyperlanes, for example, any race with warp or jump drives was going to bludgeon you to death. If you were a wormhole race, you might as well be just playing the single system challenge.

This may come as a complete and total shock to you, but what works in playtesting in a small group doesn't necessarily work for your audience on release. MMOs, for example, go through major mechanics, powers, and even race changes several times through their lifespans. Whether those are improvements or not is entirely subjective.

I don't get it... they have successfully brainwashed people into thinking they are getting a service (GaaS) with these essential DLCs while in reality the consumer sheeple are getting fleeced, milked and shat on.

You're right, you don't get it. There are no "essential" DLCs in Stellaris. Zero. You are not required in any way to purchase any DLC to get the QoL patches. Those are 100% free. They always have been and, according to both Wiz and Paradox, they always will be. In point of fact, you can synthesize nearly the same experience of DLCs with mods to very near parity. So essentially what you are doing is setting up a strawman argument so you can knock it down and rail about something you have generously demonstrated that you know absolutely nothing about.

Those of us that actually play Paradox games (not Cutter) know this to be true... I'd much rather pay for a few CK2 DLC throughout the year rather than pay for a new version every year like the Madden/NHL franchises do.

I'm a huge Stellaris fan and I am absolutely OK with their DLC policy regarding the game. I'd much rather support them continuing to develop for and support a game that I have more than 1500 hours in. The fact that all of the game mechanics changes are included in free QoL patches is awesome.

There is a portion of me that wants to get on board with Linux, but the community has kept me away.

I think it depends on the community and where you're asking. For example, Archtards are notorious assholes and will just endlessly point you to the, at times, hilariously out of date Arch Wiki as if that solves all problems. I've tried pretty much every distro from the days of Slackware in the mid-90s to every major, modern distro there is. I generally find the Fedora people to be quite helpful and their IRC channel help is also really good from my own experience.

I don't know everything there is to know about Linux but I help out where I can and to the best of my ability, even here on BN. Most recently, I introduced Verno to PCI Passthrough so he could enjoy Linux and still play his Windows only based games.

So, I think community is what people make of it. The Linux Mint community is ridiculously friendly to newcomers, for example. I've seen whole posts written as a step by step guide to help other Mint users get some of the most esoteric hardware I've never heard about working under Mint.

Brought to you by No-Shit Sherlock and Captain Obvious.

That is one of the many, many reasons I choose to use Linux. That and we get fixes much faster than Microsoft or Apple pushes out to their userbase. Also, free improvements to our favorite software for which we don't have to buy "versions" to receive.

Linux isn't for everyone, certainly, and that should be carefully considered.

How about going back to the Dark Crusade game mechanics and expand them. Instead of just one world, we go from world to world.

I hated what they did with DoW 2 and 3. I wonder how well DoW 1 and DoW:DC sold in comparison to 2 and 3.

Just finished watching the Cloverfield Paradox an hour ago. If I ever wondered what it felt like to have a jackhammer go at my nuts for an hour and forty two minutes...now I know. Holy hell was that absolutely excrebale!

Now, Altered Carbon on the other hand, that is a badass show. Binge watching the shit out of it between server migrations and it is phenomenal.
