I don't think any pointer device could survive the clickfest that would be a hybrid AoE/Diablo 2 game.

You'll be able to tell who has played this game by the massive muscles in their index fingers.

Bless Electronics Boutique. They bought back all my old games about 6 months ago so now I was able to get Painkiller for free and now I saved about $30 on doom3.

I am officially amped up to play Doom3 and get a dedicated server up. Mmm.. server tweaking is wonderful stuff indeed.

From the few screen captures I've gawked at and the in-game video I've seen the shadows are very sharp and there's little "gray" area. The shadows remind me, and I know this sounds odd, of how the X-men cartoon of the 90s was drawn. Very black black shadows and little in the way of "soft shadows."

Of course I say this now but when some monster comes lunging at me in the game the last thing I'll be worrying about it shadow definition. I'll probalby be more worried about "HOLY SHIT WHERE'S THE CHAINGUN! DIE! Crap.. reload."

I love my 9700 Pro as well - it's been real good to me. I'll wait till someone writes some benchmarks that doesn't have so much stink on it.

This is the card I'll be using to play (and review) the game. Though by this time, it seems a review on a relatively obscure site like mine is pointless. Everyone (where everyone = gamers) will be buying/stealing this game. If these numbers are accurate for the 9800 series of cards (56+ with no AA or AF) then I'll probably feel comfortable locking the AA and AF at 2x in the control panel for my 9700Pro.

But, if you're waiting for "less stinky" numbers I guess wait for me to write a review. Even though my site will deal less with tech stuff and just get to how the game plays.

Stencil shadows are a method by which a 'mask' is created for the screen using a feature called the stencil buffer. This mask can be used to exclude areas of the screen from subsequent renders, and thus it can be used to either include or exclude areas in shadow.

Informative. Thank you. So, for example, if an imp is running at me and my trusty shotgun and there's a light source to the left, this buffer will determine if the imp's shadow shows up or doesn't on certain surfaces or objects in my line of sight. Correct?

Yeah, when I saw the elephant screenshots I was excited but when I read that they way you counter elephants is with burning pig units (apparently a true tactic used at the time).. well, for my money that sort of unique unit will get my greenbacks.

Then they showed units of rabid dogs too. It's like Risk meets Black & White without all the stupidity of Black and White (worst. game. EVAR!)

Okay people need to realize something. Do you think any company would release 4 player multiplayer if they could do 32 player multiplayer?? There must be a technical reason why they don't allow more than 4 players in the shipping version. A very good technical reason and that reason scares me...

True, the fan boy flames have been stoked. But like a lot of people, when I finish the single player I'll go back to my regular multiplayer game which in my case is RtCW or ET. Now when RtCW 2 comes out then I'll start twitching excitedly.

It's surely something to do with most likely the shadowing and graphics

Well, wait a sec here. Aren't shadowing a graphics a client side issue? I know they are in Wolfenstein. The dedicated server just passes co-ordinates, weapons, etc between clients.

And normally a lot of online gamers turn off most of the bells and whistles in multiplayer to get the most from their ping and processor (also to pick up targets quicker).

The problem there is, they'll need new maps, as I'm betting everything that ships with it is designed for 4 players (and small).

Ah come on, imagine a BFG or rocket launcher on such a crowded server!

It was specifically stated just the other day that 4 player was definatly changable by mods, and that the engine could support many more. And that its set at that because the MP maps it comes with are designed for 4 players. I'm assuming if ID ever releases new maps that are bigger, they would set the player limit higher for those maps.


Yeah, if I understand modding (which I will not act like I do), you need the SDK (software developer kit?) files then you can mod away.

I'll give it about 2 days after the SDK is released before someone puts out the basic mod of: "32 player Doom3" at which point the community will go nuts and all the pale geeks at Quakecon will leave a mess in their seats.

Minimum meaning, "You can turn on a wireframe mode similar to MechWarrior 2 and it might just play."

Damn I hope an Athlon64 3000+ and Radeon 9700 will be enough for detailed graphics.

If the in-game editor hasn't changed much from Qcon 2002 when it was demonstrated then indeed you can edit levels in real time including adding sounds attached to moving objects or directional sounds.

Any of you modders out there of course though will probably be making your first priority to uncap the 4 player limit on the multiplayer game, right? RIGHT?!?

Seriously, RtCW2? It's all about multiplayer. Yeah, gimme some Nazis to shoot in single player that's fine, those bastards deserve it anyway. But the thing that's kept this game (and Enemy Territory) on my hard drive is the multiplayer. Best team based game ever.

Hi,

Does anyone else have problems with the introduction ad to the site locking up their computer? I think it's an ad created with Flash and I get this problem quite often. I've tried using IE and now Firefox but I get the same results.

It's personally very frustrating since many more sites that I go for news are using these type of ads on their front page before being directed to the actual site content.
