2. Great morning May 8, 2007, 10:35 Dan =0)

I'm having a great morning.

Car radiator blew out while pulling into BU's parking lot - will have to take commuter rail into work at Framingham (1 1/2 hours or so vs. 30 min drive)... Can't afford a new radiator until Friday...

Found out from coworker that the building crew at the Framingham building nicked a sprinkler line on the roof whilst installing new A/C unit (or something like that), thereby flooding part of our floor with more than an inch(!) of water.

I'd say I could post on Blue's, but then I don't want to jinx myself and anyone else with fate having to unplug the site for hours. Oops!

Anywho, mini-review (mild spoilers) of Spider-Man 3 would follow at least some of what the negative reviewers had said. SST: Way too much over-the-top crying, some bad dialogue... and Kirsten Dunst really wasn't suitable for the role of Mary Jane, IMHO. She just comes off as much too saccharine for my taste. I'd thought of MJ as more of a tomboy-type character. And Tobey's Peter as an emo-ish guy who likes jazz (I thought of Jim Carrey's "The Mask" more often than not during the dancing bit), reflecting his "dark" persona? I laugh at, and not with, the characters.

One final bit: Whatever happened to Gwen Stacy? It seemed to me the writers never brought any sort of closure for her. Or, really, any of the other characters apart from Harry and Sandman....

On a computer-related note, I'm needing to replace my PC's PSU, which is currently 350W. Any recommendations for best brand/wattage for the buck? I'm not running any hardware that requires serious power:

AMD Athlon XP 64 3000+, BFG/nVidia NForce4 mobo, 1.5GB DDR333 mem, Seagate 160GB SATA drive, Seagate 40GB PATA drive (Virtual PC stuff), XTASY PCI-Express card based on ATI x700, and an el cheapo PCI 5-port USB card.

EDIT: Sorry HE (and anyone else who may've seen the pre-SST text).

Two thumbs up for FarScape... lotsa good chemistry amongst all the characters, to me, and the characters are very well thought-out.

Of course, I've only gone through until partway through 2nd season, with bits here and there afterward.

Andromeda? Meh, it was "okay".

Babylon 5 and Crusade (what few episodes they aired) were both great... it's a shame the latter was cancelled.

Jeebus.. I'm usually a very patient one, but you are far more patient than I would have been in this situation, Blue.

Ok, managed to listen to it ok. Not bad. Sort of reminds me of early late 70's Kraftwerk meets 80's synth meets 90's trance. Kind of reminds me of that 80's hit, 19 (about Vietnam), stylistically that is. I see influences of everything form Tangerine Dream and Kraftwek to Ray Lynch and Jean Michel Jarre (whom of which I've always wanted to see live - his shows are unreal, as I'm sure you well know).

I didn't know how apparently diversely-influenced I am.

Seriously, though... I had to look up Ray Lynch and Jean Michel Jarre to find out to whom you were referring (though Jarre sounded familiar).

I remember listening/watching a performance of "19" on the television ages ago...

Heh.. I don't think I've heard Little Red Riding hood... though Monster Mash is up there.

EDIT: I will admit that I've done the Monster Mash once at karaoke... not that I could do the song much justice.

(And no, I have no video for that...)

Loved the Star Wars bagpipes.

Currently listening to "Atomic Moog 2000 (Post Nuclear Afterlife Lounge Mix) by Coldcut, here...

Was wondering if you saw my message about the new song I'd posted If not, oh well. It's called "Nova" if you want to listen (see the myspace link below).

As to the lamb/poodle bit... "Jesus" is right. If nothing else, examine the shapes of the pupils....

That aside anyone ever listen to Amy Winehouse

Hey Halsy, I purchased her song "You Know I'm No Good" from iTMS after hearing a preview of it. Not bad. Reminds me a little bit of Angela McCluskey.

I've posted up one of my own songs, which I called "Nova," on my MySpace band page. Similarly might not be to everyone's tastes.

7. System temps (contiued from earlier) Apr 24, 2007, 21:46 Dan =0)

Well, I haven't yet gotten around to the Power Mac or PC, but the iBook's now registering at a cool sub-100F CPU temp now... of course, the living room window's slightly open, allowing the outside 64F draft to cool down the room (and the system, I'm sure).

Fix the fan Dan, before your computer gives you a tan.

Wonderful words of wisdom.

I'm wondering what the programmed threshold is in the iBook G4 before the fan's supposed to start whining.... Apple's "technical specifications" give only allowable operating and powered-down environmental temperatures.

Must be an "Apple Genius" secret.

23. Re: A bit of concern Apr 24, 2007, 16:01 Dan =0)

Heh... well, I had always been of the mind that "too hot" was over 120 or so. This thinking started in consideration of my old desktop PC during one summer while I was living in Southborough... that was a 2.4GHz P4 that hit 120F on a rather hot day with all windows shut in my "mother's-in-law" apartment. A "good" day would be less than 100F...

Still, it'll be interesting to get a comparison of three completely disparate systems (not terribly scientific, I know ).

1. iBook 1.33GHz G4 w/ 32MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 3D, 768MB PC2700 RAM, 60GB HDD, CD-RW (Combo Drive), Airport Wireless (wireless-g) card running Mac OS X 10.4.9.

2. Power Mac ("Mirrored-Drive Doors") dual 1.25GHz G4
with ATI Radeon (unsure of model #) 128MB card, 1.5GB
PC2100 memory, one 80GB IBM Deathstar IDE hard disk, one 160GB Seagate IDE hard disk, Combo Drive, sharing mouse, keyboard, monitor and a Buffalo Airstation (used as an accesspoint) with...

3. Custom PC - AMD Athlon XP 64 3000+ (1.8GHz) with ATI x700-based XTASY PCI-Express vid card sitting on BFG NForce4 mobo, 1.5GB DDR400 mem, Seagate 160GB SATA hard disk and Memorex DVD-RW.

I should be on later tonight for anyone who wants to hop into GW, BF or anything of the sort... hell, even Worms: Armageddon!

19. A bit of concern Apr 24, 2007, 15:42 Dan =0)

I've been noticing my iBook G4 (14" 1.33GHz late 2004 model) running seemingly a bit hot to the touch today. On top it's toasty. On the bottom (underside) seems almost hot enough to burn.

Fan speed: 0rpm (?????) Note: I do not hear a fan running. 1. It's way quiet, 2. I've gone deaf, or 3. it's just plain not working.

Current temps (according to Hardware Monitor):

Battery: 93F/34C
Graphics Proc: 129.7F/54.2C
Power Supply/Mem. Bottomside: 124.7F/51.5C
Proc Bottomside: 129.7F/54.2C
SMART Disk Fujitsu MHT2060AT: 118.4F/48.0C

Not hot enough to boil water. Still, I'm very concerned with temps reaching nearly 130F on some bits...

I should run Hardware Monitor (3rd party app) on my desktop dual G4 and see what the temperature craziness is like in comparison...

Likewise, I'll probably throw a temp monitor on my Windows XP box for kicks... anyone have any suggestions for a decent freeware 3rd party temp-monitoring app?

Thanks,

Dan =0)

Research opens way for bionic eye.

I thought I'd seen, a year or two ago(!) on the program "Scientific American Frontiers" with Hawkeye... er, Alan Alda, a facility in Portugal already experimenting on blind people?

Granted, the apparatus used was very primitive-looking, and seemed rather cumbersome, but the subject/patient could make out vague shapes and shadows.

Man Denied Smokes Allegedly Rams House.

Talk about nicotine withdrawal.
