How about a sort of "steampunk" wild west? That might be putting it a bit too closely to the Will Smith vehicle.

I believe they were looking for the prefix, "anti-".

or "con-"...

EDIT: There was a funny saying pinned up on a former workmate's cubicle wall at a prior job which stated:

If the opposite of "Pro-" is "Con-", then the opposite of "Progress" is...

So the kid gets marked off for putting "noob" as the opposite to "pro" but not for putting "live" as the opposite to "death"? Death is a noun. Live is a verb or adjective. Stupid bastard.

Just as "hopefull" should be "hopeful". I would take off points for misspelling a word; this makes me wonder if 1. the person being quizzed really is that bright or 2. this was somehow faked?

I still don't get how the FCC can hand out huge fines for indecency without defining what indecency is. I mean, I do get how they can do that so maybe I just wish it made sense.

Oh, define it they do, but it's so broad and vague that there is some a lot of leeway as to its interpretation.

i bet you have all their albums.

Nope. Actually, I have none of their albums, just one song (Dancing Queen) off some compilation album...

What if I said yes?

How can Americans be so afraid of nuclear power, and still drive cars every day?

Good question. Leaving out that everyone drives cars anyway, the main reason I hear from others against nuclear power is not (just) the possibility of a metldown or some sort of Chernobyl-like disaster, but the question of where to put the spent fuel, as well if there are other (radioactive) waste byproducts in the process of fission.

Not that I'm a scientist, so I'm afraid I don't have much of an idea of where to begin in lessening concern of what I'll call a radiation event. I figure, at the very least, that modern reactors are far more reliable than the older ones, by nature of technological progress...

Out of curiosity, what -does- happen with the waste - whatever form that might be - and might that cause any problems, ecologically/biologically speaking?

Dan =0)

EDIT: Personally, I think if reactors have come to a point where they're 99.9% stable and are efficient producers of electricity in comparison to other means of production, then I say why not? Apart from the initial cost to develop a reactor, of course... EDIT2: ...or to maintain them. (What's the MTBF on those things anyway? Not that I'd want to be anywhere near one if and when it happens... Heh.)

1. Daylight Saving Time Mar 9, 2008, 17:28 Dan =0)

I had thought about this earlier: the name Daylight Saving Time is inaccurate in that we don't really "save" any daylight time, with the way I parse the term anyway; a more suitable term would be something along the lines of "Time-Shifted Daylight Time," with the period we know as "Standard Time" either kept the same, or termed "Unshifted Time." Of course, this is more unwieldy. Why we don't just split the difference, set the clocks half an hour earlier or later (depending on the "Time" period) is beyond me.

Then again, I am not a chronologist.

Oh well.. time to make dinner.

EDIT: And just now I read the OotB linked article on DST...

2. Weird font issue Mar 1, 2008, 15:52 Dan =0)

Hey guys,

I'm using my mother's Dell XPS M1710 notebook running WinXP - resolution is set to 1920 x 1200, and I've got all advanced font settings set to Tahoma 16. For some odd reason, while most elements of the display show the new settings, items like the entire "Run " dialog show only small text, no matter how I try to modify font size settings (Control Panel - Display - Appearances - Advanced).

Any ideas as to how/why the Run command (as an example) displays such small text? Windows bug? Something I'm missing?

Thanks in advance,

Dan =0)

It was a nice bit of satire.

I thought the same of RoboCop (another Verhoeven flick).

Is that the same New England?

Unless Massachusetts somehow entered an alternate dimension briefly, then yes, I'm afraid it is.

6. Weather Feb 10, 2008, 16:29 Dan =0)

Last night - a bit snowy, not too bad though.

This late morning/early afternoon - thunder and a bit of rain, but warmer... snow's mostly settled if not melting away.

Decide to go to Watertown and Arsenal malls to check out DVD deals, if any...

In the span of ten minutes, while out until about 15 minutes ago...

1. Turn into Watertown Mall parking lot - sunny, not too cold, felt like it was in the mid-40s (F) - proceed to go into mall, look around, etc. (It's a tiny mall, really.)

2. Get back to car, turn out of the parking lot to head toward Arsenal mall across the street - overcast, flakes start falling.

3. Park, open door at Arsenal - VERY windy, with heavy snowfall. Get Casshern DVD, head back to car.

4. Close car door, head back home (less than 5 min away). Not even 1/4 of the way there the snow stops, all is sunny again and (relatively) warm.

Granted, I live in New England... but WTF?

I swear, the longer I live here, the more I swear I recognize that the weather patterns are more random MORE frequently (and thus, more chaotic??). Maybe it's just me.

I guess I'm runner-up for last place today, as I spent $9.99 on an inexpensive Hohner C-tune harmonica.

Lycos is more a portal now than anything, and WebCrawler appears to have become more of an aggregate search engine, tying together several other engines (Google, Ask.com, etc.) at once... so I suppose WC is effectively "dead" as a stand-alone.

Also, um, I hate to admit, but *raises hand* hi, I'm Dan =0), and I was an AOL user up until around 1997 when at home.

What they fail to mention is to actually play it as a reasonable frame rate you have to have a computer sent back in time from roughly the year 2102.

And that's just on the low settings.

I didn't really get into the online gaming arena much (dialup or otherwise) until I hit college, except for a two-week course at WPI (between sophomore and junior years in high school) in the summer of 1994 where a group of students and I played DOOM. Webcrawler was introduced to me at WPI, as well Lycos. Yahoo? A mere search engine rather than a full-out busy-looking portal.

Netscape was "the bomb" back then, too. Running on Windows 3.11.

Memories.....
