I've been playing games for 28 years, and I consider wii-sports to be one of the best games ever made. A fact borne out by its huge success.
To date I have not seen a single advert for the wii. This console sold on the strength of being fun, and great word of mouth.

did they ever get the game to load in less than 40 minutes?
I uninstalled that buggy crap ages ago.

Amen. I'm always interested in hearing how other game developers have managed to stay indie and stay profitable, and noticeable just on the PC.
It seems silly that so much hatred is reserved for a guy who makes games. He may be a bit volatile, but hes an independent game developer making niche games for the PC, who is happy to talk openly about them to the gamers.
Those people are a dying breed. Its a pity everyone has to treat this one like he is Saddam Hussein.

because
1) the UK has historically been very good at producing games, and therefore it is an industry with good potential and
2) Games companies can locate anywhere in the world, so without tax incentives, you are basically encouraging them to sod off elsewhere.

I run a UK games company, and the high level of tax here is one of the reasons I'm seriously considering moving to another country.

Agreed. retail sales figures are a silly way to measure the market these days. they don't include MMOs, STEAM or other digital distribution methods. The entire casual games business is ignored, as are indie games.
I wish epic would just fuck off to consoles and STFU.

Your decent gaming rig does other stuff though. My Nintendo wii has 1 game I want to play (wii sports) and apparently can tell me the weather,. big fucking deal.
My PC lets me surf, bank, shop, use email, store holiday photos, watch BBC iplayer, do home video editing, and develop games.
Oh, plus it lets me play them too. A vast catalog of games that dwarfs any console list.
You can't compare a PC with a console. The console is generally a one trick pony, maybe two tricks at best.

Not true. Game developers can read forums and emails, and they can see if people buy a game or do not. I've always been very much against ads in games, and still am, but I'm reassured to stay that way by reading posts by people who are as opposed to ads as I am.

how is this different from world of warcraft? the players of that game pay for an expansion effectively every 3 months, although the difference is, they don't get as much new content for their money, and no option to stick with the game as is, for no extra cash.

The sims is a very popular game, more popular than COD 4 or Crysis or Bioshock. I know its not trendy among the hardcore, but the game clearly makes a lot of people happy.

don't make me laugh. I know these people, i talk to them. They don't hide the fact.
Piracy is the number 1 reason to leave the PC platform. How many people have to tell you this before you will accept it?

And show me how I can click a single rapidshare link and then be playing a pirated game on my wii. Piracy on consoles is a whole order of magnitude harder.

if you sell 10,000 games, and see 40,000 different IPs connected to a server to ply online or to download a patch, what do you think is happening?

When you go to the pirate bay and see 400 people seeding a torrent of the game that isn't in stores yet, what do you think is happening?

Piracy is the #1 threat to the survival of PC gaming. I speak as a PC gamer, ex-lionhead coder, and current indie game maker.
You can deny it all you like, but why the hell is everyone (even my pc-loyal old employer) shifting 100% to consoles?

One of the Iron Lore devs posted today on an industry forum with a bit of an (understandable) rant about why Iron Lore died, and put a lot of weight behind the view that rampant piracy had caused the bulk of their problems.
You can debate it all you like, but thats what one of the devs is saying today.

agreed 100%. Its silly to think that its just a money game. If so, why are games like dwarf fortress and mount n blade so popular?

And thankfully, as you are releasing a demo, everyone can do exactly that. A great move. I wish every game developer would release demos of their products, rather than assuming hype will shift units.

I love it when companies act like penny pinching assholes like this. Makes me feel like a right hero. This is a flipping database transfer, admin cost should be about $0.01.
Idiots.

in any case, the wait is not 'almost over' thats 7 months away. For all I know I'll have gone off games by then.
I wish they would STFU until a game is a month from release.

who cares about the status? this game is a joke that will never be released. And even if it was, I have zero interest in role-playing some macho retard that was a sad cliche 10 years ago.
I'm just depressed content-free no news bullshit like this gets treated with anything but a rolling of the eyes.

my pc lets me play all the pc games. if i want to play all the console games I need to buy 3 consoles, which will cost a fortune. You cant play wii sports followed by halo without unplugging something and purchasing 2 flipping boxes...
