comments on their forums are less than encouraging, and with no demo, and not even any PC screenshots, I wont be bothering, despite being a huge trekkie

I see its still a felony to show screenshots with the GUI in. You know, the thing that actually controls the flipping game.
I dont have time to read pages of crap about it, but usually, with a game, a glance at the GUI can tell me what kind of game it is.
I smell a quick console-port.

3. Re: a must-buy Dec 5, 2006, 16:45  cliffski

yeah Im only being sarcastic, I like a GOOD WW2 RTS. All I know about these games is the screenshots shown with the demo, which are taken (as is the pathetic norm) without any GUI at all, so I have no idea what style of RTS it is.
So I decided not to bother today

HAHAHAHAHA

its 640 MB. hardly an impulse demo.
ho hum

The country is on the brink of civil war, thousands have died, thousands die every month, on both sides, and some guys just want to turn it into an on-rails shooter game to cash in.
Tragic.

8. Star Trek Legacy Nov 30, 2006, 04:16  cliffski

This game scares me. I'm a big trek fanb, but there is NO demo, and the develoeprs have made clear on their forums that they flat out refuse to make one. This so sounds like people trying to hide something.
Also, every screenshot I've seen ahs the GUi removed artificially, so all we really see are engine renders, so we have no idea how it will look or play, and in their forums, they are always talking about controlling stuff with the 'right analog stick', which just SCREAMS 'Console-port' so badly. Added to the fact that you can only play as the federation, and that there is only 4 player multiplayer, I suspect this game is dead in the water PC-wise before its even released. A pity, because I'd pay good money for a *Good* PC game.
Guess I'll wait till its 1.99 used on amazon.

"We figured the more content the better!"

some people still stranegly believe this, which is why most game demos are a gigabyte now. A gigabyte of tedious crap usually.

News Comments > Elite to Return?
19. Re: No subject Nov 17, 2006, 17:39  cliffski

surely not. Eve is massively like elite. it has the option to be a pirate, a huge universe connected by hyperspace jumps, the option to do trading and to have a score reflecting your standing with the police.
Eve *is* elite online. I was addicted to elite as a kid, its one of the greatest games ever, but why would someone bet on elite to take over from eve when eve has such a massive head start.
Forget space, and wizards, do me an MMO set somewhere original. purlease........
Napoleonic era europe would be cool.

36 legacy screenshots, and not one has any UI on it. These arent game screenshots, they are engine screenshots. what a waste of time.

err why?
is there some requirement that every new video game costs 10 zillion dollars?
I dont think so.
This whole 'next gen' bollox is just an excuse to screw people out of money for higehr poly versions of last years hits.

I wont buy BF2142 for many reasons (crash prone BF2, voice spamming, disconnects, slow laod times), this is just another reason not to even consider it. I was a hardcore BF2 player, but I didnt even download the demo of this piece of shit.

Nice rant.
Does it apply to the spinny logo videos that say "challenge everything"? are they needed? what about the movies that play in the background of the fucking UI? I dont know how I COPED before they invented that. And how about a wav file of some slow-talking jerk saying "press the up arrow key to move your soldier forwards" as if that 1% of people needing the tutorial can't fucking read or guess that.
I've worked on 'triple A' games and seen first hand how artists ignore the texture budget, and coders dont give a shit, and management don't understand. Ive seen the 5 meg textures that get used for peoples flipping ear lobes, despite the fact that clipping distances mean its mathematically impossible to see that res of detail. I'd wager that that demo includes textures for maps that aren't even included, sounds for vehicles that arent included, and all kinds of other shit because nobody could be fucked to work out the dependencies. Good coders ensure only essential assets are loaded. Shit coders load everything at the games start.
If companies want to keep making 'demos' that weigh over a gigabyte, they can go on selling them to the 5% of gamers with an 8Meg broadband link. the other 95% of us will buy other games.

10. only 1.1 gig? Oct 9, 2006, 10:58  cliffski

And here was I massively impressed that a one-map demo of a fucking FPS game could fit in the space of merely 1,100 copies of Tolstoys war and peace (uncompressed).
Those DICE coders must ROCK.

agreed 10000%. here is how you release a demo:

http://www.positech.co.uk/democracy/DemocracyDemo.exe

A straight exe link, no worries using GetRight or similar, no problems linking direct, no adverts, no need to enter an email or buy a fileplanet subscription, no surveys to take, no spam, no redirects, no hard sell, no spyware embedded in it.
Just a trial version of the game, to entice people to buy the full copy.

Thats what happens when you get lifelong gamers who remember pong running a vidoe game company, rather than some suited git who used to sell washing machines. I might not have EAs budget, but Im glad I dont have their attitude.
