Maybe this is off-topic, but I like the way Valve is releasing a source version of Half-Life 1. I wonder if they had to rebuild all the maps or did they just do some map conversion of some kind.

I wish Id would release Quake 1 with an updated engine like Doom 3. Quake 1 had a dark spooky indoor atmosphere that would be perfect for the Doom 3 engine.

I wonder if Valve is doing this in an effort to pressure Vivendi into actually releasing the game to retail.

They were saying that Vivendi might sit on HL2 for up to six months.

But if enough people pay for the steam version through Valve and then have to wait on Vivendi to actually release it.... that makes for more pressure on Vivendi to release it to retail.

I'm not spending a dime on this until I see it sitting on a store shelf somewhere.

I didn't buy Doom 3 until I saw it sitting in EB. And even then I hefted the box to make sure there was actually something in it, because I couldn't quite believe they finally released it. And I had gotten used to regarding all rumored release dates as 100% bullshit.

Besides, I can't quite bring myself to pay 50+ dollars for the steam version. I'm old fashioned, and when I pay for something, I want the damn box and manual like in the old days. I need those offical CDs, not a bunch of CDRs to back up my internet-delivered game. And stuff.

Yeah, I'm betting nothing is going to "top" Doom3's monster closets, 1994-era ammo traps, and the ever so immersive flashlight/weapon schism. Plus things like having to exit the game to find a code off the internet.. Nothing will ever come close to the kind of immersion Doom3 has..

This may be news to you, but Doom 3 was a remake of Doom 1. So naturally the gameplay should be 1994 era. Doom 1 had monster closets and ammo traps, and so the remake of Doom 3 also has monster closets and ammo traps. This is not a complicated concept.

You see, I think Doom 3 hating is somewhat akin to masturbation. And there are several people on this site who seem to engage in it quite frequently.

I still thinkElder Scrolls I : Arena is the best of the three. Morrowind was damned fun for a while.

I can't wait to hear about TES4 though.

I wonder how long it will take to actually finish Doom3 classic.

He has 2 partially done maps, and roughly 28 left. Unless he doesn Episode IV Thy Flesh Consumed.... then he has nearly 40 maps to do.

Quake 3 has absolutely no new weapons

The weapons it has are standard and work fine. If it isn't broken then there is no reason to fix it. I remember games like the original Unreal which had "innovative" new weapons. And most of them sucked. Rocket launchers with ridiculous spiral firing modes don't impress me.

Just about every possible weapon in an FPS has been done already, so I don't see how anyone can be terribly innovative with weapons.

only has deathmatch

HELLO. It was supposed to be a deathmatch only multiplayer game. Why would a DEATHMATCH ONLY MULTIPLAYER GAME have single player or anything else?

Because quake 3 is a remake of quake 1 of course!

No Quake 3 is not a remake of Quake 1.

while unreal torunament and tribes has tons of well built modes?

Let me bring you back to reality for a moment. UT2004 was released almost FIVE YEARS after Quake 3. Of course it has more modes and more features. Half of which are very superficial. Id is known and respected for their simplicity and elegance of design, so I don't see why anyone would criticize them for continuing that trend.

Just curious, do you realize how much of a tard that uses every excuse in the world for a reason why there is no innovation you sound like?

Just curious, but do you consider that to be a sentence? Before you call me a "tard" perhaps you should consider learning some basic grammar.

I dont think even the biggest id fanboy will say doom 3 is the best game ever yet pc gamer said that

I did not say that Doom 3 is the "best game ever." And neither did PC Gamer.

Doom3 did not even have an alternate fire button.

What is your point? The weapons in the original Doom only had one firing mode, so why would the REMAKE of Doom be any different? Does the rocket launcher have to be able to send out 3 rockets that turn in a spiral or some other ridiculous nonsense like that?

Come on guys, let it go. Doom3 isn't that good

You keep saying this, yet dozens of people on this site and dozens of reviews say otherwise. Why don't you give it up?

What drives you to complete an FPS other than to find out what happens at the end?

To have fun playing the game, and to see lots of cool stuff like monsters, level designs, art, etc. I don't play a game or read a book just to know the ending, I play or read it because I like the journey or experience itself.

dust off a real old-school game and play it

I think all of Id's games qualify as "old school" action games, including Doom 3. Most would agree.

If a company other than Id released this game, and it had lesser graphics, it would only sell 10,000 copies.

You don't know that for a fact, and you have no evidence or proof at all to back that up.

I didn't realize that Id set out to make a game with no story, tedious gameplay, no replay value, and totally devoid of innovation.

Doom 3 does have a story, and it is just as valid as the "story" to many other FPS games.

I don't think Doom 3 has "tedious" gameplay at all. It is all quite simple, like the weapons and everything in general. I played through it in about a week, and I had a blast. And then I started over on a harder difficulty, and I am enjoying it MORE. Becuase it is a lot scarier on harder difficulties, and there are multiple paths through at least on level. And I have been noticing things the second time through that I did not catch the first time.

As far as innovation is concerned, every technical aspect of this game is innovative, graphics, sound, and interface. And I think the artwork and art direction in general is a step above what I've seen in other games.

And again you state how wonderful HL2 will be, and how the modders will head that way, as if you are the all knowing all seeing grand overlord of the gaming world. And you haven't even played a DEMO yet. It doesn't come out for probably two months so why don't you save the non-stop HL2 praising until you are actually playing it.

Is it possible to buy/get a legitimate windows xp pro cdkey, without all the packaging, and if so is this cheaper than getting a retail box?

Many major universities sell Windows XP Pro CD ONLY to their students for 5 dollars. No Joke. If you know anyone who is attending a college or university get them to check on this at the school book store.

I got WinXP Pro, Win2000 Pro, and Office XP Pro for 5 dollars each at UAB. (University of Alabama at Birmingham)

If you made a WWII game today with 60 levels of indoor shoot-em-up, you would have a turd

Not if it was really well done and was a ton of fun to play. It doesn't have to be ALL INDOORS, but I want more of it to involve castle wolfenstein, rather than Airfield wolfenstein, or city wolfenstein, etc.

But 60 levels in today's super detailed ultra mega graphics gaming world is not something we are likely to see.

So can anyone tell a HUGE difference between the Medium and High Detail settings in Doom 3?

Sure it looks a little better in High Detail, but it isn't a staggering improvement. And I get waaaay better framerates on my semi-prehistoric graphics card. (128meg Geforce 4 Ti 4600)

And I discovered something about Doom 3 recently. There are people complaining that it isn't scary, and for Rookie and Marine Difficulties I would tend to agree.

But I just started over on "Veteran" and it is scaring me A LOT more, simply because stuff that jumps out is much more likely to be a threat and kill me. I think playing on Veteran or Nightmare difficulty would dramatically improve the scare factor for a lot of people.

I wish more of Return to Castle Wolfenstein had actually involved castle wolfenstein. I remember most of the game taking place in other places like airfields and cities and stuff.

I fondly remember the old Wolfenstein 3D, with it's 60 levels. All of which were inside the walls of castle wolfenstein. While I realize that RtCW had more varied levels simply because the technology was more able to show outdoor levels than the Wolf 3D engine, the older Wolfenstein game was all about the dungeons and interior stuff.

Even the original 1980 something Apple II Castle Wolfenstein was all indoors. So I'm just hoping that Wolfenstein 4 or whatever they call it will return to the roots of the series, which was indoor dungeon/castle romping.

Just finished Doom 3. Is it just me or is (secret)

I didn't think the boss you mentioned was that hard to kill either. At least it was REALLY TALL. lol.

I had more trouble with that earlier boss where you have to shoot the three floating headlight thingies down. And I thought that was kind of stupid. I liked some of the earlier bosses however.

But then I remember that the final bosses of both Quake 1 and Doom 2 were kind of stupid.....

But Quake 2 had a pretty cool final boss at least.
