Old World Blues requires the update. The update does not require the DLC. I don't see how this can be construed as a conspiracy to milk more money out of customers that don't want to pay. If you don't have the willpower to resist buying the DLC, that's your own problem.

I'm with everyone else that thinks this game needs more support. I just recently began playing it again and it's less stable now than it was last October. That doesn't make this a conspiracy. This is Obsidian we're talking about, though. Their record of incompetence in supporting their games is well established, so it would be prudent to keep that in mind when forming your expectations.

Although I understand the financial incentives for developing for consoles and PCs together, I frankly can't get behind the decision to develop for 5-year old console hardware and then port to PC hardware. This just seems counterproductive if you want to show off new technology.

I'll get out of the way now so the torching of Bethesda can commence.

I think people are being a little too quick to judge this game. Oblivion had a ton of flaws, but in many ways it was a huge advancement over Morrowind. Granted, Morrowind had better storytelling, but Oblivion made the plunge into a more immersive world. Fallout3 addressed many of the concerns people had with Oblivion regarding level scaling and such. Bethesda listens. The only area in which they have no defense is the poor quality of the UI and not enough of it was shown in this demo to make that call.

And regarding bugs - every game is going to have bugs. Bethesda's ES games are unprecedented in scale and content, so it's simply not reasonable to expect them to be free of bugs. With other game companies releasing games with day 1 patches, Bethesda has yet to do this and hopefully they won't with Skyrim. Being your own publisher helps in this regard.

Like many others, I'm disappointed (and a little disgusted) to see the demo was on a 360. I hope this is because it was just easier to show the game in an expo environment this way rather than an elaborate PC setup. Maybe the PC enhanced features are still being fine-tuned or still need some video card driver tweaks to really be ready for primetime. This would all be understandable. I would expect to see these enhancements in an official gameplay trailer closer to release.

Still Obsidian, so I'll take a pass. They proved they are incapable of delivering a stable product long ago. Now it seems that they are trying their luck with console games masquerading as PC games hoping that it will be easier. No interest here.

God knows why they still require activation this long after release in the first place. The easy solution to all this is to just patch out DRM after a year or so, rather than continuing to punish customers.

That would require patching DA:O, something Bioware either isn't willing to do or isn't allowed by EA to do.

And a note to Ars: where have you been? This is normal behavior from Bioware if you've paid any attention in the last year.

True enough. I'll bet a large part of Bioware's reluctance to produce a DA2 toolset is because it will only benefit the PC community - a community that the developer has marginalized from the beginning of DA2's development. Skyrim will open everyone's eyes.

Well really I wanna know what was in that thread then. I mean in general I don't so much as glance at thread titles so this must have been one REALLY interesting thread for it to stick in your mind so much.

The user was banned for using profanity in one or more forum posts. It's really not that exciting, but it did clearly violate the forum rules. If account banning was meant to affect one's ability to play the game, I suspect users would be a little bit more behaved, but this would have to be explicitly stated beforehand and would likely meet with quite a lot of resistance.

It's nice when a foul-mouthed kid can get the weight of the internet behind him. Otherwise he/she would have likely been unable to play the game for quite a while.

I always understood this. When I first played Quake and saw the little, indiscriminate chunks of meat fly away from what was formerly my opponent, I thought "oh, giblets!" I would never pronounce "giblets" with a hard "g" so whenever anyone said "gibs" with a hard "g" I gave them a strange look. Just what word did they think it was derived from, anyways?

Technology so advanced, we had to remove the tactical view!

What a bad decision.

Bioware stated that the tactical (isometric) view was something DAO had on the PC platform only and they didn't care enough about it to do the extra work to include it for DA2 on the PC. Since DA2 is clearly a console game first, this shouldn't surprise anyone. It's one of the many reasons I won't pay a dollar for it.

shoddy marketing tactics in pursuit of the almighty dollar from the lowest common denominator.

Well said. This is, of course, what is driving their marketing blitz. One person with an idea to make more money. Of course, the game will likely be full of bugs; talents that don't work, effects that are unimplemented and it will be mind-numbingly easy. It feels like Supreme Commander 2 all over again.

Oh, and I feel absolutely no enthusiasm for these "exclusive" items. Each and every one of them will likely be provided in a single package (by someone) that is far easier to track down than Bioware is making it.

When you abandon all attempts to provide QA for your game so you can work on the sequel, you aren't going to inspire confidence in your customers and you aren't learning anything from your mistakes. This one's a pass.

My desire to purchase Valve products will likely not return as long as the "uncomfortable silence" continues. I honestly don't understand why people listen to them anymore, but then I'm stubborn.

edit: by "them," I was referring to Gabe Newell, Erik Johnson or anyone from Valve that fails to provide tangible information on the status of the HL franchise. Silence doesn't make you look cool, or busy, or calculated. It only makes you look foolish and helpless.

First game had potential but was abandoned by the developer. Expansion was a bug-infested nightmare that remains problematic from technical and challenge standpoints. Support and communication have proven to be Bioware's weak points and any potential DA had to be a "Baldur's Gate successor" was lost long ago. Now it has even lost its capability to be memorable on its own merits because it is broken and unsupported by the developer, and the sequel seems by all accounts to be a console-centric dumbed down approach to make the genre more "accessible."

If 2011 proves to be the last viable year for Bioware, then I say "good riddance."

This looks like a game one would see in 2001, not 2011.

And Obsidian's realization that New Vegas might have had too many bugs is too little, too late. I say they can keep their "in-house" engine.

DRM free? These games never had DRM, just a CD check. And really, they run fine on modern OS/hardware configurations already. The Widescreen mod makes them beautiful, too.

Too bad Bioware can't patch the game worth a damn. Half the content offered in the expansion still doesn't work or has game-breaking bugs. That was nearly 7 months ago and they've only offered one update that doesn't even fix anything. This "Ultimate Edition" won't include an update and will simply be a repackaging of the same broken game that is available today. Also, it will include several DLC (e.g. Warden's Keep) that have serious compatibility problems with the expansion. And the promo items found in the collector's edition or pre-order copies of the game also won't be included. This ranks up there with T-shirts and action figures (no joke) that Bioware is pushing to get as much money as they can out of this franchise.

No, it won't be bundled with Portal 2. It will, most likely, be an entire new game. The plot hints in Episode 2 suggested a lot more going on than could ever be covered in an episode the same size as 1 or 2. After the end of Episode 2 it was clear the writing didn't know where it was going and it has taken them years to figure out where to go from there and they're clearly not done yet. The writers wrote themselves into a corner with no idea how to finish the story. And these are the guys that want to make a movie?
