Announcing a Collector's Edition before the game's release is even known is the definition of hubris. Blizzard is as out of touch as George Lucas.

I reverted back to the unpatched Rage.exe when I discovered they locked almost all of the console command values. The game is so much better with my custom config disabling health regen, better accuracy for bad guys, faster run/walk speed, infinite and faster sprint, no stupid highlighting objects and things you interact with, some other tweaks, oh and also this:

Inside the Wellspring Bar:
Before
After

Wellspring mayor's office:
Before
After

Call me crazy, but I think the "after" screens are better. The Wellspring Bar seems too awash with light in the "before" shot. The darker scenes are more convincing.

I empathize with the Steam purchasers. I purchased Rage through Amazon and chose to read the reviews before opening the box. It has already been returned for a full refund.

Carmack's comments regarding the PC's inferior nature as a gaming platform seem strange. The only way it makes sense to develop for a 7-year old console is if your only interest is to make money. For years, Rage has been touted as new technology, but this is likely just marketing PR for potential licensees. This isn't what I would have previously associated with id, but that is clearly the direction they're moving in. I fully expect the backlash will result in very poor interest in their next offering.

I hope Bethesda is listening. I would hate to see Skyrim suffer a similar fate, though it is much too late to do anything about it now. That game too was developed on the XBOX 360, but I think more effort (or as Carmack puts it, "development effort") has been put into the PC version to make it look better.

id (Carmack) would develop a game for the iPhone if they thought it was the leading platform for games. It's still a stupid avenue to show off new technology if there's something more capable.

I just discovered the Morrowind Graphics and Sound Overhaul and I'm more excited to try that than play RAGE. PC games are far more compelling, even the old ones.

I have to disagree on not buying games on day 1, however. If I don't buy Skyrim on day 1, I won't be able to enjoy it properly. If it's flawed, I won't be entitled to bemoan it's shortcomings.

It's a beta test after all, right? I would guess this is the reason why they are doing it. In the end, their beta won't cover enough because they didn't make it big enough and this kind of thing will still happen once the game goes live. Perhaps they know that and they're just trying to get better (i.e. faster) at fixing the holes.

Just my observation. I won't be buying it (and not because of DRM/copy-protection/persistent connection).

It's probably because the Clans represent the greater threat and therefor present the greatest challenge. If the game is successful, there's no reason why they can't make an expansion from a Clan's perspective. I suspect that even if it is Inner Sphere, you'll eventually be able to pilot a Clan mech. And with all the infighting, you'll probably get to shoot at Inner Sphere mechs on occasion, so all mechs will eventually appear in your sights.

But to be honest, they've been telling us to "wait about a month" for a while now.

Personally, I'm not interested in the multiplayer precisely because of the kids who say things like "suck it up or stay away." I liked the single player experience of Diablo and Diablo 2. I have no interest in playing with a bunch of strangers who act like 14 year olds with anger management issues. If a single player PC game won't let me save my progress or pause the game at any point I choose, NO SALE.
And to any kids I offended, don't worry. I plan to "stay away" from you regardless.

Edit: Blizzard is just too full of themselves. The same absence of logic that prevents them from allowing higher resolutions leads to these same kinds of decisions. They're like George Lucas writing the script to the Star Wars sequels in a vacuum.

At least the author is honest with regard to his/her "poorly written introduction." Japan isn't a "tiny island." It is an archipelago with the combined land mass near to that of the state of California.

I'll admit, I heard some good things about Civ V, but I haven't played an offering from the series since Civ 1 or 2 because I didn't care for the cheating AI. Has anything changed?

Just what the gaming industry needs. More economists. You know, there's a reason why I haven't purchased a single Valve title since HL2. It's this guy.

This guy has gone out of his way to provoke this lawsuit, or one down the road. Bethesda is well within their rights to protect their intellectual property and I fully believe that they will prevail. It is entirely appropriate for Bethesda to force the issue at this point rather than wait for it to become flagrantly infringing, which I have no doubt it would become. Nobody likes to see these lawsuits, but in the end this guy will be done and Bethesda will not be a pariah. They will deliver great games, as fits their reputation, which is more than one can say about EA or Activision (or Bioware, after DA2).

PC Gaming has been getting ignored by Microsoft, Bioware and others, but it's hardly dead or dying. As long as PCs exist and companies like Nvidia continue to make cutting edge graphics hardware for PCs, then the platform will remain the most capable. There will always be some developers that realize this. The console platforms are much more susceptible to "dying out." This is wholly unnecessary.

Bioware must be resurrecting the dead horse for a reason. I suspect DAII DLC or DA3 announcement not to be too far off. I loved DAO, despite its flaws and abandoned support. I loved it for its complexity (relatively speaking), its depth and its atmosphere. Even if it paled in comparison to other games native to the PC platform that embraced these aspects, it was a very enjoyable game. Bioware's complete failure to support the game once the expansion came out was enough for me to not want to buy the 'sequel'. Then I saw the demo for DA2. I was in disbelief. I'll admit that I don't own DA2 and I've never played the final game, but I've seen enough of it and spent countless hours following the response, review and support of the game on Bioware's own forums to know that I made the right choice.

Skyrim's an absolute buy for me, but I honestly can't think of one good reason to buy it this early. It's not like Grim Dawn, where your pre-purchase money helps the development team. This game's gonna ship regardless, and it won't be available to anyone until enough units are available to satisfy demand. The fact that it is available this early sets a disturbing precedent for future releases. But then I haven't bought many games on Steam; perhaps this is their modus operandi.

I'm gleefully looking forward to this game. I purchased the box versions of Titan Quest and Immortal Throne a couple years ago, and I'd gladly buy it again on Steam for the convenience if I knew the money went to these guys and not THQ.

I played quite a lot of FNV back in November/December with nary a problem except the occasional broken quest but when I installed it two weeks ago with the (then) latest update, it crashes every 15 minutes or so, almost always after a quicksave or (more often) while attempting to perform an autosave. And I play with very few mods - essentially the same list I used 7-8 months ago. If you're not experiencing crashes, then that's great news for you, but it doesn't take much time looking at the Bethesda forums to see that this isn't an isolated problem.

Ambient sounds are all messed up (casino noises in the wasteland, wasteland noises indoors, etc.). This has been attributed to the latest update on many forums (Nexus and elsewhere).
