So many things in Starfield just don't make any sense.
  • You can open your inventory with one keystroke, yet you have to tab through 5 screens to get back to the game. Did no one ask whether this makes sense?
  • NPCs only react when someone takes damage, yet children are immune to all damage. You can unload a full magazine into a child in front of a guard and they don't react (though the child flees). Did no one ask whether this makes any sense?
  • On PC (apparently not on XBox) the player character holds melee weapons like the UC Saber backwards. Did no one look at this to see if it was correct? How does it get broken only on PC?
  • The jump distance of ships is limited, seemingly to get players to invest in a skill tree, yet there is no refueling mechanic in the game beyond landing on a planet. Did no one ask whether this makes sense?
What's the point of these questions? They would have all been answered and addressed if someone were responsible for maintaining a central design document - you know, the thing that every other developer making games insists on to make sure that designers on different parts of the game know what core features are required to be in the game in order to insure that their work ties in with the overall product. Yet Emil Pagliarulo insists that design documents are not necessary at Bethesda Game Studios and now he's complaining about criticism. Go figure.

Maybe if you had a central design specification that you kept up to date so everyone could work with it you wouldn't end up with a disjointed game that leaves so many feeling disappointed. Maybe if you used a more modern game engine you wouldn't have to make so many compromises. Not your decision? Then don't use having to make concessions as an excuse for using woefully outdated technology.

Apparently it's taking longer to shoehorn the new "Creations" paid mods shop into Fallout 4 because the Microsoft overlords are making them finish Starfield first. In all seriousness, the majority of BGS is working on the Starfield DLC because it will generate revenue. Patches for Starfield do not, and a next-gen update to Fallout 4, which has been marketed as initially being free to owners of the game, will only generate revenue from new console versions. The delay can therefore be attributed to the poor reception of Starfield (and the general state of the game at launch).

Nothing will change. Review numbers on Steam will continue to drop and no innovative content will come out of this studio as long as Todd Howard and Emil Pagliarulo are making design decisions. I doubt many will watch this entire video, but the section on Design Documents is quite good at illuminating the real problem at Bethesda Game Studios and it all comes down to the decisions of these two people. It's hard to imagine a patch that can fix this level of arrogant stupidity.

It's crazy how bad starfield is doing.
Two months since release and it's already on sale at a 30% discount in the during week, non holiday time.

On the other hand Days Gone is a really good but flawed game, with many mods to fix it.

Don't Bethesda games go on sale pretty soon after release as a general practice?
I would say it's directly related to how well the game is received. Fallout 4 didn't go on sale for 30+% until February 5, 2016 - 8 months after release.
Fallout 76, however, went on sale for 25% off just a month after its troubled release on May 14, 2020, then 50% off on June 25, 2020.
Skyrim didn't go on sale until Oct 02, 2012 - nearly 11 months after release. All of these metrics can be viewed on SteamDB.

Bethesda is displaying arrogance and denial. This shouldn't be a surprise. Bruce Nesmith, former lead designer on Skyrim, said in an article that they thought they were infallible. Everything that has happened since then should show that the decision makers at Bethesda haven't learned (at least those who haven't retired or moved on). They're unable to acknowledge their failures. The behavior isn't unique to software development - all design professions are rife with it. When you do something so long you become convinced that nobody else can do it better than you. These developers have been using the same game engine for over 20 years. That means they have tools written for it, hundreds if not thousands of external shaders tacked onto it and many modules added on to do what they need it to do. It's likely that nobody at BGS knows how to use a real, modern game engine so they don't know the possibilities beyond their own shitty engine, and the management isn't interested in retraining them because they can't see past their own hubris. This is why they reply to negative Steam reviews with the claim that load screens are necessary for the amount of data. They aren't necessary with a modern game engine (just look at No Man's Sky or countless other examples), but Bethesda is stuck in its own arrogant, backward way of doing things.

They have shown that they can't be relied upon to innovate, so the only hope for TES6 is for Microsoft to step in and make a correction but I don't see any evidence of that happening.

It's pointless to post quotes from Todd Howard. At this point nobody with half a brain should believe a single word that comes out of his mouth. Between his lying and incompetence he has shown that the more authority he has over Bethesda game design the more irrelevant they become as a developer.

With so many of the designers, developers and producers that brought us Oblivion and Skyrim having left the company, it's no surprise that Todd Howard, having occupied every position as it is vacated by his betters who came before him, continues to push the same old BGS buttons, expecting the same results. After the disastrous and embarrassing failure of Fallout 76 and the miserable mediocrity that is Starfield, the only savior we can hope for to ensure that TES6 isn't another fetch quest-riddled, dull, unimaginative platitude to RPG gaming is the reliable if indifferent greed of Microsoft management to right the ship before Todd pitches this $7.5B investment into the Mariana Trench. If we don't hear an announcement within the next year that TES6 will abandon the "Creation Engine" for a game engine from this century, then this studio is done for.

If you purchased the game, Bethesda/Microsoft has your money so they'll take that as tacit approval for how they're doing things. Don't like the game or how it's supported? Stop buying their games. This is a business to them. If you purchased Starfield, you can bet that TES6 will be more of the same and you'll have no one to blame but yourself for rewarding this developer for continuing to use an obsolete engine, incompetent and lazy game design and abysmal management to produce more dull, bug-riddled, mindless tripe for the masses with no impulse control.

I couldnt help but feel sorry for Ser Jorah, a decent guy who has made some questionable decisions in his life and unlike most everyone else in the series always ends up paying for them bigtime...

[sarcasm]Yeah, and it's great how they spend 10 minutes of an episode talking about how some long-dead Lannister cousin liked to smash beetles...in a season that's quickly coming to a close without resolving much at all. Meanwhile, actors that are meant to be playing 10 year olds are entering high school.[/sarcasm]

BGS isn't the studio working on this, so your hopes may yet be realized. Let's remember that a lot of stuff gets announced on Bethblog that isn't the product of the studios that have brought us TES and Fallout. There are now a lot of studios under the Zenimax umbrella and they all get press on Bethblog.

I don't see Wolfenstein. It must be "limited vocabulary" to make that association. After Dishonored, it's clear to me that Bethesda could be up to anything at this point. Fallout4 has never been confirmed, though everyone seems willing to discount or ignore that fact, but a fair question would be why they (BGS) is not working on Fallout4 exclusively at this point. I'm sure everyone wants to see what a Fallout game could look like on an optimized Skyrim engine.

I'm guessing that whatever this is, it isn't from BGS but some other studio under the same umbrella, i.e. not from the people who just stopped working on Skyrim.

Gabe doesn't know how to do anything. That's why there's no HL episode 3. That's why Valve has such a chaotic (i.e. nonexistant) management model. Steam is at a point now where it would be successful with or without Gabe Newell. What else is Valve good for these days?

Skyrim had no such support when it "shipped" (i.e. released on Steam). Bethesda only added it (kicking and screaming?) in a title update after a third-party mod made the functionality available.

While I share everyone's frustration (I am a PC gamer after all), this XBOX360 exclusivity conspiracy nonsense is just getting silly. If all that were holding it up was an exclusivity deal with Microsoft, it would have released on January 04 or 05. Believing that the PC version of the DLC was held back until the PS3 version was ready is slightly more believable (though no less aggravating).

Remember that content (not updates) for Skyrim is developed on the 360, just like the main game was. Porting to other platforms (PC and PS3) takes time. It's not a set amount of time and the longer period that Dragonborn has taken to port to these platforms is more likely an indication of its size than anything else.

I'm not saying people shouldn't be irritated at Bethesda, but clinging to this exclusivity conspiracy is really not productive. People need to educate Bethesda of the foolishness of developing primarily on a platform that is 8 years old and technologically obsolete. And that says nothing of the fact that it's highly insulting to the most loyal (and oldest) members of their fanbase who supported them through TES III: Morrowind.

So far, I haven't been sold. BG1 EasyTutu, along with a few free-of-charge mods, is a pretty darn nice BG1 experience...;)

You're not the kind of person this effort is targeting primarily. Being able to play this game on a tablet (iOS or Android) is worth $10 to a lot of people. Why it's twice as much for PC and Mac, I don't know.
