Weird, you'd think of all people one of the developers of this game would know how to pronounce the clan names correctly in that video. I couldn't repress a serious wince every time I heard him say "Uesugi" or "Date". Still, looks pretty awesome, and definitely picking this up just from what I saw.

Well, quite! It's ooo-eh-sue-gi and da-teh. But perhaps they're more interested in bandwagon jumping and don't want to go into to too much depth.

Luther, I just have to say: your avatar is pretty epic.

Thanks! Here's the original image

Yup, that's what grates. Whilst I really enjoyed his performance in Portal 2 (although space sphere gets my vote), if you were one of the real developers you'd have spent years in front of your computer doing complicated and/or skilled for a tiny fraction of the pro rata pay and with none of the usual adulation, interviews and praise that a famous voice actor gets. We get about as much respect as actors did before they unionised.
I'm not going to be too hard on him - he's an actor, I kind of expect most of them to be pampered luvies. I just think he could choose his words better if he doesn't want to sound like a wilting thesp.

I have some insight into the relative difficulty of various jobs:

I've been a programmer working on big games.
I've worked as an artist.
I've done voice acting for big games.
I've also built a patio, decorated a house and helped build a cycle path once.

Programming is the most difficult job and voice acting was the easiest. Creating artwork is possibly the most relaxing and rewarding (everybody with eyes appreciates a pretty picture but most people don't know how to appreciate code - they know when it's wrong though. Oh yes, they notice that all right. f**kers.). Physical jobs are taxing but are like exercise and you really don't have to think or have studied too hard . Therefore, those are not the hardest jobs.

Putting on silly voices and acting is fun.

This is probably old news by now (hey, I've got a job!) but the hex code in the '13311tower.com' is all javascript keywords once you turn it into ascii:

This is a drop in replacement for those strings:

"noConflict",
"onload",
"background",
"#000",
"css",
"body",
"actions/77P98JBTRb.php",
"ajax",
"fadeOut",
".container",
"src",
"images/13311tower.jpg",
"ready",
"html",
"fadeIn",
"pageX",
"offsetLeft",
"pageY",
"offsetTop",
"actions/VqdIqFQFPj.php",
"x=",
"&y=",
"click",
".CDyjK9kxxV",
"placeholder",
"input[placeholder]",
"actions/k5G2dyYRvN.php",
"tqhyyDitPn=",
"val",
"input[name=M6dCM2ZJxv]",
"&ReBwsoTXvb=",
"input[name=s069trV5XA]",
"",
"submit",
".container form",
"url(",
") no-repeat #000 center center",
"push",
"length",
"none",
".image",
"remove()",
"random",
"floor",
"splice"

You can bet folks at Bethesda and their subsidiaries are following this but can't say a word about it due to company policy. I'd be chomping at the bit! I think developers are actually better at PR on account of NOT being lawyers or HR people. Everybody should have very little patience for corporate fuckwittery, not matter how much you like the company it's coming from (and I do like Bethesda! Less and less every day they don't reply to this in a non lawyerish manner!)

I bet most Bethesda developers are cringing at this, cursing their management and their lawyers. This is the exact opposite of good PR Bethesda - you're a company which ordinarily enjoys a lot of respect; don't squander it through corporate asshattery!

I remember hostile waters... Tom Baker voice 'These are hostile waters!'. That game was let down by the very strange FOV - it was almost orthographic. I'd like to see more RTS FPS games. Maybe I'll write one myself.

I am really looking forward to this but I have to say that the earlier screenshots from several years back looked better. The landscapes from those batch of screens were quite inspirational - this lot looks like badly animated mannequins, smooth simple Perlin noise terrain. The tech seems over complex, generic and unbelievable.

This is an example on an original screen:

Here

Now that, to me, looks fantastic. Great tech design, I love those Syd Mead style Walrus. Lighting and landscape are convincing and compelling. I'm not getting that vibe from the new video and screens. Different team perhaps?

A comment on Kotaku I saw about the CGI trailers writing checks the game can't cash seems... apt. Does everything have to look like the smooth cartoony low poly world of warcraft because of false correlations marketing men have made between that look and success?

MMOs are a zero sum game anyway - these games are so jealous of players time tjey don't let any other games (or any other activity for that matter) in.

Having read the article in PC Gamer the story is this: your character is a U.S. marshal who was on that plane that was sucked into the alien craft at the beginning of the first game - there's your link. He ends up on an alien world where they presumably have an open mind to strange new species and plenty of bablefish. He gets bored so finds work as a bounty hunter.
I think it's reasonable to allow that, if the earth was invaded by an alien force, there would be more than one interesting story to tell.

Fion: get a grip. It's a CG trailer that may be close to the way the game looks on a very high end PC rig. It won't look that good on my laptop or your XBox but so what? Are the developers terrible people because they can't pull magic flowers from their asses?
