There are lots of things about the Earth which make it seemingly "special". Unless you are scientifically inclined you likely don't know how critical the Moon is to our evolution. First, it stabilized our rotation and tilt. Second, the larger tides it creates in our oceans were critical to development of many evolutionary steps. Jupiter practically acts as a comet/asteroid deflection device. Obviously it doesn't get them all, but it gets a lot of them.

The math is such that you pretty much have to assume there is other intelligent life out there. However, there are so many seemingly "lucky" things about the way our planet was created it makes you seriously wonder if the frequency of intelligent life might be far less than we'd hope/like/think it is.

On the subject of NFL playoff football... the talking heads put up a great stat which I will put here in the form of a question:

How many NFL franchisees have in their entire history won fewer playoff games than Tom Brady?

Answer in secret text: 22 -- freaking insane!

I'm not up in arms about it, especially since I'm Win7 for now. But I see no reason to be optimistic about it. We've seen plenty of talk from MS about improving the PC gaming platform without a lot of results.

I would have to say Thanks but No Thanks if I was Biden.
Reading about it I guess Biden did get it "with Distinction" which makes him only the the third person with that honor/designation.

I don't have time to sit there looking at each update, evaluating if its worthy of installation or not. Windows XP had hundreds of updates, I didn't check them all and I would find it dubious if anyone else said they did.
Quite right, but what I can do is simply wait. Very few updates are actually critical, so I can afford to wait a couple of weeks and see if others find problems.

Don't trust Microsoft? Don't use their fucking operating system. You have no real control over it, no source code and no ability to change your destiny. They can do whatever the fuck they want at any time, you can do jack and shit about it. Mad about their decisions? Good, tell them about it with your wallet.
Actually, that is the point. I may not have the source code, but with Win7 I do have the ability to choose which updates I get. And I don't have their Win10 spyware. I have told them with my wallet by not paying for Win10 and by not using Win10 for free, which would allowing them to collect and sell my data.

And I will use another OS if/when Win7 is no longer viable and if they haven't changed their tune by that time.

Gotta agree with that. State and/or municipal funding of sport venues is straight out theft of the taxpayers. Also, I agree with the guy from Sports Illustrated -- they should not be allowed to take the "Chargers" team name with them to LA. The town should keep the name like Cleveland got to keep the "Browns".

On one hand you say it doesn't matter then on the other you say it's not OK that Microsoft is doing something far less insidious than the above.
My location data analog was theoretical. Although technically possible, I don't believe Google and Apple actually are getting that information. Microsoft is without a doubt gathering data from Win10 boxes.

Now, am I being impossibly naive thinking my location data isn't being collected and sold? I'll grant that is within the realm of the possible. But I think it's pretty unlikely.

Oh, I know they are not going to do it. You are absolutely correct, it is totally driven by the money it generates. That however does not change the fact it would be wise for them to do it.

If Edward Snowden has taught us anything it's that turning off a function on your phone and turning off your phone completely means absolutely nothing. They can all be remotely turned on w/out you knowing. You think that little led on your webcam only comes on when you you use it, nope, it is controlled by software and software can be remote controlled.
Not tin foil, there is no tape over my webcam and I use google and have a nexus 7 tablet and am writing this on a W7 laptop.
Sounds pretty tin foil hat to me...

Yes, you are correct -- technically it is possible for software to enable my microphone or camera without my knowledge. As far as I know, the ability to do that has never been found in standard software which comes on phones. And since I don't download apps, it really reduces the risk. The locations I visit are extremely boring. Meijer, Espresso Royale, Menard's.... I eat food, drink coffee and buy tools. JFC! They know everything about me!

That said, yes -- the NSA could, if provided the meta data, figure out the "cloud" of people I am in contact with and the general nature of our interactions. That's a long way from Google or Apple obtaining marketable information on me.

It would be wise for both the NBA and MLB to seriously consider shortening their respective regular seasons. I think the NFL is probably fine at 16 games over 17 weeks. The NHL? *meh*

People who say they don't care what their phone has on them are insane. Your phone can track your location in real time, you put a lot more important private info into your phone and you also expose your social contacts to the same data collection. Google and Apple are mining this shit to hell and back, not to mention all of the app companies. They're also selling it. They give you far less choice about it than Microsoft.

I'm all for pissing on Microsoft when they're being dumb but the privacy argument is just much ado about nothing. As for control, people who want to control their updates get some sympathy from me but that's the way software in general is going. It sucks but Microsoft is just late to that party and its been going on for awhile.
First, even if Google or Apple could track my phone, which they can't because I have location information turned off, I fail to see what advantage they could gain from knowing what businesses I am visiting, which is pretty much the most they could determine. Nor do I see how they could manage to sell that information. And frankly, I don't use apps on my phone for these very reasons. The only thing I do with my phone other than making phone calls is an occasional Google search.

Second, even if Apple and Google were doing something nefarious, that doesn't justify Microsoft doing it.

Don't trust Microsoft enough to update Windows 10 but do trust them to update Windows XP or Windows 7?
I don't trust automatic, unstoppable updates. I install my Win7 updates only after they have been released for a few weeks. Allowing any potential issues to be identified and allowing me time to review any major changes (which are few and far between these days).

And more importantly I totally hate the unwarranted spying in Win10. I also dismiss the idea of an OS as a service as corporate gobbledygook. I will be forced to switch from a MS OS if they don't chance course before Win7 becomes outdated to the point of being unusable.
