Oh I don't think they were complicit, it was probably just a software exploit.
We'll see... If I had to guess, I'd agree mostly likely an exploit, but these days you never know for sure.

Went and saw it at the 10:40 am showing this morning. *meh* It wasn't terrible, it wasn't great. I felt confused a good portion of the time, wasn't sure if it was due to my poor observation abilities or an intentional act on the part of the film. I look forward to seeing how it fairs according to the critics, the fans, and by the crowd of this humble site.

For now, it is unclear how complicit Kaspersky is or isn't in this situation. That said, years ago I didn't use their software for the very reason they were based in Russia. I don't know if that makes me paranoid, but I certainly feel better about my decision now.

And from the hypocritical right to life party, Republican Tim Murphy resigns from Congress after asking his pregnant gal on the side to have that thing sucked out
Do as I say and not as I do, thanks bro
Actually, the only surprising thing about this is he is resigning over it. If all the hypocrites in Congress resigned -- I don't know how many would be left, but I'm fairly sure it would not constitute a quorum.

Anyone have recommendations for an antivirus program? I've been using Bitdefender, which has worked well, but they really pissed me off when I renewed last year and I have no wish to support them any further. I was considering using just Malwarebytes, I run script blocking, and uBlock on my browser so Iím reasonably protected from web-based attacks, but Iím not averse to additional protection in that area.
I'm using AVG. The one down side is it occasionally (once or twice a week? maybe less) gives a pop-up to prompt you upgrade to pay version. It is infrequent enough that I haven't bothered to go looking for something else.

How is this the foretelling of Apple's downfall? Unless someone can show me the sales guys are making the decisions at Apple now -- which might be the case, I actually don't watch Apple that closely. But last I checked Cook was still running the show.

If this works anywhere close to as well as demonstrated early in this video, it is pretty damn amazing.

I'm pretty sure everything you said Prez is true. What I didn't see was a suggestion. Are you just throwing your hands up in the air and giving up? Yeah, it is a huge, complex problem. One step at a time, every marathon starts with a single step.

You mentioned the Civil Rights movement, in some ways that is a reasonable comparison. The way guns are, as you indicated, deep in our culture. So it was with the way blacks were treated in our culture. It has been 50+ years since the Civil Rights movement, and we still haven't achieved the "true" goal, which marching Nazis in Charlottesville proves. But we've made significant progress in the last 50-60 years.

We need to start taking the steps in gun control, and maybe 50 or 60 years from now, doing what Australia did won't be so impossible.

Except that the populace doesn't get to vote on legislation, congress does. After Sandy Hook, 90% of the population supported universal background checks, but no laws were passed, because congress is paid not to pass gun control legislation by the NRA.

Wow, no kidding. Lots of well-known logos there. I had no idea they were so prolific.
But Blue's News didn't make the cut apparently for displayed icons. Booo!

Very weird. I looked at both galleries and I thought I had carefully looked at all the icons. Guess I should check my med levels...

"initially similar"? I'd like a further explanation of that. I'd read a blurb a couple of weeks ago that satellite imagery (non-optical) had found a likely crash site, but I haven't heard anything since. So I assume either it was "fake news", the data was misinterpreted, or was just simply something else.

My condolences to those impacted by the events in Las Vegas.

I purposely stayed away from news all day today. I had no interest in hearing either the details of the event or anyone pontificate about it.

Well, I hope you are right. But, I'll believe it when it happens and not before. I think the Ds are being overly optimistic on this...

My dad is one of those angry over the federal estate tax. I keep reminding him that it only applies to estates over $5.5M, and his is not there today and will certainly not be there ever, as he's already retired.

Doesn't matter, a month later the estate tax is still a chief concern of his, as he thinks the government will take his money after he dies. The state, sure, but he never votes based on state estate taxes...
This is a perfect explanation of one of our major problems. People simply believing what politicians say instead of spending a few minutes to find out if the politician is or isn't correct. It reminds me of the "death panel" nonsense the GOP rolled out when they were trying to keep the ACA from passing. And the worst thing about it, there is no easy solution. If you couldn't convince your father the estate tax is not a death tax on every American, what hope is there to educate the general populace on more complex issues?

I've come around on this. When Dems take over congress in 2018,
What in the world makes you think that's going to happen? Last time I looked at the polling, the chances of that happening were slim to none.

It is somewhat ironic. When humans started eating meat, it is what stimulated/allowed for the continued growth of complexity of brain activity -- we were consuming more "energy" and therefore our bodies could "spend" that energy. And now, the ever growing industry which provides us meat is in some part to blame for climate changes which endanger humans.

Ironically, the Dems will have a better chance with Trump, if they can take the house and senate next year.
I've seen no evidence to indicate the Ds will take the House or Senate in 2018. Hell, Roy Moore is the likely next Senator from Alabama. My current prediction would be the best the Ds can hope for is to keep 48 seats in the Senate. They are not going to retake the House.

Trump and the GOP are making a mess of things, but the Ds haven't shown any coherent plan to counter it. When the Ds were in control, the GOP plan was obvious -- they were against anything and everything the Ds (specifically Obama) were for. Now that the GOP is in control, I have no idea what the Ds plan is... and neither does the portion of the population they need to vote for them instead of the GOP.
