Huh, so like Steam, or Gametap, or most MMO's then.

Except those are services and MMO's, but Fate is just a single player game. I don't see a standard run of the mill single player game as deserving of uploading my usage stats, regardless of how anonymous they are.

I tried GameTap last week to test out American McGee's Grimm while it was free. The installation was fairly smooth. I'm not a fan of the interface. The download was fairly quick and the game played fine. All in all I found it to be a decent outlet for digital distribution. I prefer Steam, but it was ok.

The gold membership looked interesting, though. For $60 you get a years worth of premium games which included several that I would be interested in (Sam & Max, Overlord, Planescape Torment, Hitman BloodMoney, Ghost Recon, Rainbow 6 3 Gold, etc...). That same $60 would get me JUST the Sam & Max episodes from Steam. So that seems like a pretty good deal right there...

While this is kind of cool for real friends, it is also a 2boxer's dream come true. I hope the law of unintended consequences doesn't bite them here.

I'm sure this was a wise move for id, but I find it a bit amusing since the original teaser for Quake sounded very much like the way most MMOs play. That was back when it was going to be more fantasy/melee based than a sci-fi shooter.

Also I think id had the idea of a quake level exit taking you, potentially, to a different server so you could have an internetworked world across many machines. That sounds kind of MMOish too.

Seems like they've been dreaming up MMO concepts for a long time. Of course, this is all ancient history so maybe I'm misremembering...

The PDA\recorded message as a story telling device has always struck me as cheap, especially if overused ala Doom 3.

Nobody overused the recorded message to worse effect than Bioshock and everybody seems to love that game. I agree with you that it is overused. It was great in System Shock, I thought it worked fairly well in Doom3 but I find it extremely trite in Bioshock.

I'll give em points for trying to associate with Gabriel Knight. Good times in parts of that series...

I hope they do Planescape Torment and System Shock 2. Both games I've heard are great but I never got around to playing.

Skoll, espionage is being revamped for both DA and TotA; that will be the major feature of the next update. Check the official forums later for more info.

Wow, thanks for the update. I'll read the patch notes when they come out.

GC DA was a great game, I definitely enjoyed the campaigns and a few skirmished. However, I was pretty disappointed by the espionage aspect of DA. In all the various Civ versions it was a great feeling to become a military might and storm across the map. It was a tad boring, granted, but it felt good. In GC DA the more powerful you get the more spies you have to deal with, which really took the fun out of being on top.

Also the unification of espionage with sabotage always rubbed me the wrong way.

I didn't read anything about that getting fixed/changed in ToA, but I didn't dig much deeper than the feature list...

I'm playing through STALKER now and it's fantastic. There are a few minor flaws, but bitching that you need mods to fix some minor flaws of an otherwise great game is ridiculous.

They released a great game and it was worth every penny. Mods just make it better, although I haven't needed any so far.

I blame Valve for not releasing a Steam client for Linux.

1. I bought this already on steam... (I should be safe from SecuROM then eh?)

No, Bioshock on Steam absolutely, positively has ALL of the same DRM as the boxed copy minus the disc check. Here is a quote from a Valve employee confirming this: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=689663&page=2

Read post 18. However, perhaps now 2k games will lift the securom from the Steam version because it's obviously no longer needed there.

Now maybe they'll remove SecuRom from the Steam version. A Valve employee was just posting that they usually don't have non-Steam DRM in the steam version of games (GRID for example) but that 2K required that bioshock have all the same DRM as the boxed copy (minus the disc check). Since the Steam version doesn't need the same online activation or the disc check, maybe that version won't need SecuRom at all.

That would be awesome.

Good I'm glad they replaced SDC. I hated that tool when I had to install it to play GalCiv Gold Edition.

But I still think they ought to put their games up on Steam. Sure they might make a bit less money there but I think the increase in sales and publicity would offset that.

Why even announce Diablo III in advance? It doesn't need any hype and I doubt anything can drive up sales for it. Just put out the gold master announcement a week before it hits the shelves, watch the tubes go nuts, and save yourself a lot of marketing dollars.

God I wish that would really happen for once.

This is exactly the wrong kind of patch for this game. I haven't played it, but the complaints all seem to be more about everything other than content. More content only makes a game more fun if it was fun to begin with and you ran out of stuff to do. That's not the case here.

This sounds ambitious. Too bad NWN1 turned me off to this series so badly that I still haven't returned to it. Also I hate the NWN rule set (D&D 3.5 or whatever).

So low in tactical choices for an RPG, and every character improvement choice you make is permanent. That doesn't work very well in a CRPG in my opinion.

I don't see how they can cancel support for 1 game, and in practically the same breath announce a new game. If your studio goes under (e.g. Troika) then it's understandable that you can't continue to patch your game (e.g. Vampires).

But if your studio is still making games then we damn well expect you to keep patching your existing games until they are stable.

You can't just abandon an unfinished game and move on to make more cash.

OK the Sands of Time was a fun game, and it did have a great overarching plot, but it had really horrible characters. The prince in that one was a misogynistic baby and I couldn't stand a word of dialog that came out of his mouth. I couldn't get myself to play any other PoP games since. The dialog was THAT bad.
