I've played this a few times over the years, paid a sub for a while. It's got a lot of great stuff if you like wandering the systems, but I have always found the space combat too twitchy, sort of like Descent. I never really liked combat, so I'd avoid it, so I ended up as easy prey.

Bolt action sniper rifles will chamber the next round if the trigger is pressed twice while zooming.

.. cool. This means you can stay zoomed for you next shot, unlike most of the sniper rifles in BF2. I always hated that.

Also:
Fixed the close range damage of bolt action sniper rifles. Now a 1 hit kill on unarmored infantry in 5m.

And
Raised the damage of the VSS

I remember the VSS was a great gun in Desert Combat, a combi sniper/SMG sort of thing; I don't think it turned up in BF2.

Could we just destroy all Cory Doctorow's books, and leave it at that?

80 ms? I'm stuck on a shitty Malaysian internet connection these days, my nearest BF2 servers are in frikkin China. I dream of 80ms.

Then you are waiting for the wrong game. Seriously.

Can someone explain to me why this counts as a "new instrument" and is not just a synth/sequencer controler with a pipe you can blow into? It has no strings, and no sounding chamber AFAI can see.

Sorry, the cheating is so fucking bad in the BF series that hardly anyone plays it anymore.
Me and several thousand people are still playing it. There are occasional cheaters, like in all online FPS afaik. BF2 isn't especially infested. I would say that the variety of potential threats is large compared to other games, and so novices may become confused and overwhelmed, reasoning that things happen because someone is "cheating." I've played the BF series for years, I've been pretty good at it at times, and I've frequently been accused of cheating. But I never have.

Played the 1.5 BF2 and within 3 days saw a dude in an assault chooper, flying solo, toggling between pilot and gunner slots
That's not cheating. He's simply switching to the gunner seat, firing the TV missile, and switching back to the pilot seat before the chopper crashes. It's a pretty lame game to play, but it's not a "cheat".

I don't agree in part, I played a bit of Warbirds and I preferred the "real" planes to the Crimson Skies ones.

Warbirds is a fun dogfight game, why should it have to be a sim as well - thereby becoming less fun for most people?

What? You need the name of a title to convince you that it's a successor? Look at the features, look at the playstyle, look at the developer. So it doesn't have the BF3 label, big deal.

It's not a real PC game, it's a jacked up console shooter; features and playstyle don't compare; DICE rolled over long ago and offered their ass to EA; despite your breathless boostering it will probably never have mods and mod tools.

The Battlefield series on PC reached its peak with 2142. There'll be no successor.

I'm looking forward to this more now than ever since MW2 is a bust for the PC.

I think that speaks volumes. You're a COD player jonesing for a fix, not a true Battlefield player.

I care, because it looks like BC2 for PC is shaping up to be a more noteworthy successor to BF2 than was first expected

Umm, no.

Mod tools...

Maybe.

I always thought the futuremark benchmark movies were somewhat mediocre in their style, content, and execution. OK for benchmarking, but nothing about them ever convinced me I wanted to play a game from futuremark. At first this game sounded like it might be something new but now... it sounds like a turkey.

If it just had a space sim-style flight/combat model, instead of an arcadey one, it could be great.

This is Blues, we don't welcome that kind of marketing crap talk around here.

Futuremark has always, forever and ever, been about.. umm.. heavily promoting their own rather mediocre and over-engineered product as an industry standard.

That "GPU in Film" article reads like a pc tech story from about 10 years ago. WTF? How did Lucasfilm not know about GPUs before now?
