12. Fancy cases May 4, 2004, 15:27 Absolution
I also hope they are talking about graphics performance (maybe some dual card system) and not some fancy case. I'm sure it is the latter.

Not to shoot down those who enjoy it, but case 'modding' is just like car 'modding'. Who cares? I almost got sucked into suping up my case, but I stopped when, after buying my first internal neon light, I realized I had become like one of those guys who buys a crappy Civic and puts on clear brakelights, decals, tint, and a huge ass muffler cap. I'm not going to use the 'r' word, but you know who they are.

I'd rather put that money towards a more powerful system just like I'd rather buy a turbo charger for my car than a big fin for the back.

OH SWEET, can I please pay $3000 for a crappy video card just because it's in a steel case and was a preproduction model. :/

News Comments > On Half-Life 2 Delays
8. Not good Apr 19, 2004, 09:39 Absolution
Okay, earlier in the year when they first announced the delay I said it was unfair to compare this to DNF, but now that might not be true. They seem to be going that route now. Daikatana though is a whole other beast. DNF and HL2 both have name recognition going for them and that's going to go help them be successful (although most kids are going "duke who?" now). One problem is that the engine will begin to get outdated and they might start redoing parts of it or starting over like DNF. Another is that the general buzz around the game goes from "This sequel is going to be badass, sign me up even if it costs $100" to "Wow, I sure hope it doesn't suck". :/

Good points about DNF though. No screenshots, updates, or movies. You can't even ask about such things in the forums or you get banned. Last post I saw at the official forums went something like "Poll: What are you going to do with your DNF box?".

Oh ya, and my 9600 pro still runs everything out right now at 1280x1024 without a problem. We've been waiting for these next gen games for 3 generations.

8. Pretty much Apr 12, 2004, 12:18 Absolution
When I played online it seemed 99% of it was sniping or shooting from the hip with smgs and scoring a lucky heat shot. BORING. Add the ball hacks and other opengl crap and it just wasn't that fun. I guess they fixed some of that, but I've moved on. Like I said, I got enough out of the game with the single player, which is a rarity these days for me.

You have to have some serious rocks to liquidate your assets and bet it on all on 50/50. I once did that with $100 Cd and thought I was king when I doubled up. Haha.

As much as the term 'professional gambler' makes me laugh, it must have casino owners in hysterics. Cha-ching. Although, with that bankroll he could either play high stakes BJ (quite possible he'd lose it all again though, even with perfect counting), or go for high-stakes poker. Those are about the only two where you even remotely have a chance of coming out ahead, and even then it's still gambling.

I imagine only dihards are still playing this multi. I tried to play it for about the first month after it came out, but I just couldn't get into it. The patches seem to have addressed most of the problems though and if they get punkbuster I might give it another try. I'm more excited about the expansion. That game is all about the single player for me.

Who cares if their games aren't innovative. They make the engines, and people like Valve turn them into amazing games (of course, not for HL2). I am excited to play Doom3 and HL2, but I'm even more excited to get my hands on these engines and see what others will do with them.

That sniping comment has to be troll bait. Only an 8 year old could have enjoyed the release version of multiplayer Sniper of Duty. Oh well, I haven't played any of the patches. That game was all about the single player for me anyway. It was one of the best I've played.

I didn't get in first round either it looks like. Not surprising as they took maybe 10k out of probably 20x that and I'm in Canada. Maybe next round. I got in the first round of TFT and it was a blast to help them with the game.

Is that not just the coolest thing ever? A 4Gb harddrive the size (and depth it appears) of a quarter. I wonder how fast it is?

4. Re: Latest Patch? Mar 1, 2004, 09:23 Absolution
Yes, they removed bunny hopping in the patch, but I haven't played it since the first few weeks the game came out. I'm like you, but I gave it more of a chance. Ultimately, I just couldn't get into it because of: sniping (which they also fixed, SMG from the hip was way too easy to use (still a problem probably although they apparently fixed the hitboxes too), and hopping. I checked out the forums recently and a lot were complaining that the game was too slow now that there was a penalty for continuous jumping and that sniping was impossible. I'll take that as a very good sign though (kids who want to take all of the realism out of a ww2 game - go play quake) and I might try it again soon.

I have to agree. They just aren't that funny. Will Smith had a few moments that made me chuckle, but Martin is just plain annoying.

12. Re: bleh Feb 25, 2004, 09:55 Absolution
I played the single player on veteran and it was without a doubt the best single player first-person experience I have ever had. The game is worth the money just for that experience. I played the multiplayer for quite a while as well, but I could never get into it. It was moderately fun for a while, but there was just too much cheese for my liking. Firing SMG from the hip was just too accurate, sniping was ridiculous, bunny hoping was annoying, and the cheating was getting out of hand. I left the game for most of those reasons and I really don't plan to go back, even with the patches that address some of this.

P.S. One of the things that has always annoyed me about multiplayer FPS is how much your machine makes a difference in your play. A fast machine and good connection are essential, unlike in RTS where you can be very competitive over dial-up with a moderate rig. Anyway, besides the point.

--Consequences are the main thing missing in Bad Boys II.

EXACTLY. That's what I was alluding to. At least with Die Hard I could say, ya it's far fetched, but it could possibly happen. You then actually give a crap about what's happening, and more importantly the characters, in addition to watching some cool action.

With Bad Boys 2 I just didn't care about anything because it was so obviously fake. I think there is a fine line where it just gets stupid and Bad Boys 2 is WAY over that line. How many life sentences would the main characters get? The best is how the captain won't let the boys go after stereotypical bad guy because he doesn't want to get sued/fired/inprisoned, but then he gives them a warrant on the most illegally obtained evidence EVER. haha. The extraneous use of the 'I've got a bad ass look on my face while I pull this awsome move in slow motion scene' also got annoying.

That's funny. I just watched that horrible movie on the weekend. Gone are the days when action movies actually had some grounding in reality.

47. Annoying... Feb 3, 2004, 12:45 Absolution
Sure it is annoying considering I updated my machine last summer as I was assuming I'd have the game well before Christmas, but it can't be compared to DNF. Have you been to the official forums lately? You can't even post about anything you'd find remotely interesting. The admins will just lock it. Most of the threads there involve things like "what are you going to do with your DNF box?". The hype around DNF has gone markedly from "I love Duke and can't wait for another sequel", to "I sure hope DNF doesn't suck". They are already set up for failure now so DNF better kick some serious ass. On the other hand, everybody knows HL2 is going to be awsome. We've seen screenshots and videos. DNF is just some phatom game that has been restarted at least 3 times apparently.

There is no comparison. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Duke fan (how can you not be considering its impact) and I want DNF to be great, but it does look grim for them. If we are still having this conversation in 2005, then you can make that comparison.
