From: http://uploadvr.com/verdict-zenimax-oculus/

Carmack intentionally destroyed data on his computer after he got notice of this litigation and right after he researched on Google how to wipe a hard drive—and data on other Oculus computers and USB storage devices were similarly deleted (as determined by a court-appointed, independent expert in computer forensics); (vii) when he quit id Software, Carmack admitted he secretly downloaded and stole over 10,000 documents from ZeniMax on a USB storage device, as well as the entire source code to RAGE and the id tech® 5 engine —which Carmack uploaded to his Oculus computer;

Damn son. I would have thought Carmack was smarter than this...

If this was proven to be an accurate depiction of events, then I have lost all respect for the guy. In software development it's so tempting to want to take code with you, especially the really clever stuff you tend to re-use all the time, but you just can't fucking do it. It's just intellectually lazy... I can't believe I'm saying that about John Carmack.

Multiple cores only work in certain situations with certain workloads and program types.

I don't believe this to be true at all. I write async code all day that's optimized for multi cores. It's a problem of coding styles and possibly compiler optimizations that are holding things back. My experience is writing simulations in ruby/python/javascript so I can't speak for C based gaming frameworks (like unity), but I can't see why certain systems can't run asynchronously via some internal service that is dedicated to an available core.

NHL 95 was the first game I worked on for my short stint at EA.
Very cool, definitely my favorite in the series. My short stint in the games industry was doing some graphical assets for Civ III.

Nothing to do with EA financials, but I just bought an PS4 to play NHL17.

The game is just garbage. So many graphical glitches, comentators never know who the home/away team actually is, commentary logic could be better done by a 3rd grader, poor menu management, unbalanced difficulty levels, cringe worthy graphics, horrible stretchy textures, rap music playlist (I hear van halen and ozzy at hockey games, not fetty wap)... I can keep going on.

We are literally on the 17 iteration of this game and it's this bad. Wtf?

I think the last NHL game I bought was NHL 93 for the Genesis. None of the newer ones have managed to capture the frenetic arcade-like gameplay.

Plus yearly sports game franchises are generally worse than cancer.
Yup, NHL 95 on the PC is what got be to buy the PS4. I played a whole season out, had so much fun I figured I'd see how the series is now. I mean, 17 iterations and the game is just loaded with amateur issues. At least I was able to pick it up for $39CDN new, not the ludicrous $70usd gamestop wants.

The problem with this H1B situation is that in certain industries (software development), there is so much demand for entry/mid level devs that there are no where near enough people in the US/Canada to fill the demand- schools are still pushing obsolete C++ programs while there is massive unmet demand in Web architectures/platforms.

I can't tell you how many resumes I get from former microsoft devs that are trying to get into web work, but have no experience. I interview people every week... the pool of people is really shallow, even for remote workers. It's a good time to be a contractor/consultant if you have the skills.

If you can communicate well (not common) and have the skills, I'd definitely hire an H1B. Unfortunately, these guys are exceptionally rare too. There are a plethora of engineering students from india that have limited skills- these are the guys that I think will be filtered out of the pool with this new policy.

Looks interesting, but I really wish these types of game rewarded self preservation a bit better. It just makes you decision making process different if survival is your number one objective. I know that doesn't usually make for exciting condensed battles, but it would be nice if kills actually meant something more than just a minor statistic.

I am happy with the last decent Macbook Pro from 2013.
The keyboard on the new models is a joke and don't get me started on that touchbar...
My Mid 2014 MacBook is probably the best laptop I've ever owned. It's sleek, powerful, great screen and an amazing workstation. It's just a utilitarian workhorse that I'm going to use until it dies.

I'm not happy about the latest models, the decision making process just doesn't make sense to me. I can't imagine I'll be looking for a new machine any time soon, but I really hope Apple listens to their customers so I can potentially get something decent in 2 years. I really don't want to go back to using a Linux laptop if I don't have to, but the toucher MacBook is not something that excites me.

About a year ago I was hearing Vega was going to be available in late 2016. I gave up hope in November and just upgraded then. Happy I did, I don't think we'll see a decent Vega card until the 2017 holidays.

I love it when AAA title get the linux treatment. So much progress has been made in the past 5 years, but I still feel like we have many more to go before I would even consider using linux for gaming.

How? I got a USB to SNES controller adapter a while back, are you doing something like that?

I use this thing:

Works flawlessly. Retropie immediately detects my 2 controllers, no lag, no issues.

If you go the Pi route, there is an image available by searching "retropie" in our favorite nordic search engine. It completely fills a 64gb card.

Sorry, but it's definitely a game. The gameplay consists of finding your way to objectives using the map, deciding what dialogue options your character speaks, and enjoying the story, scenery, sounds, dialogue and atmosphere. Maybe not the most exciting game, but then neither was Myst. It sounds like you enjoyed it in your own way as well and it didn't cost you anything, so I don't know what's to complain about. What is the price exactly? I think I paid less for my lunch today.
(I looked it up and it's currently at $12).

Couldn't disagree more. You cannot affect the outcome, you are just walking through a predetermined story- there's no finding your way. Yes, you interact with some things, but it's completely linear and require zero problem solving. There are some different dialog choices, but it has almost no effect on the story. The "game" is also loaded with invisible walls, so there's absolutely no way to go explore and possibly "loose" because you miss important events, stumble on something bad or some other kind of x-factor.

This is a walking simulator that has an ok story around it. I would have bought it for the full price when it came out if it was longer and there was some kind of game mechanic in it. I can think of a few that would make this very compelling. I feel like the devs were very creative and passionate, but forgot to actually insert a game anywhere.

All that said, I thought the ending was great, which it was heavily criticized for. I don't want to spoil it, but I thought it was a really great psychological experiment. But none of that makes this a game.

I watched a youtube series on this game- and calling it a game is a stretch. The guy broke it up into 6, 30 minute parts. We all chatted about it and had a cool little community around the series.

That said, I think I got more out of the game enjoying it that way than actually playing it. I would buy it for $5, but no more... I really don't want to support 3 hour experiences with virtually no gameplay. As good as the story is, Firewatch is shallow and empty and most definitely not worth the price. The only way I think I could buy it is if it had a good VR experience and I actually owned a VR headset.

I have to get a monitor soon. Is FreeSync2 worth waiting for? I use a 1440p screen and I'm content with 60fps gaming (I have a Radeon480). I have not seen any FreeSync monitors under $600 that aren't hideous looking.

You do know that Consumer Reports did the testing right? This is THE leading third party, independent, nonprofit organization that does not take outside advertising money, no free samples, etc. etc. etc. for almost 80 years? If they say something is wrong, something is wrong.

The Consumer Reports’ verdict sits in line with complaints from several users. A report on Bloomberg earlier this month claimed that Apple had faced challenges with an improved battery module on the new MacBook Pro and it settled with older battery technology to meet the holiday shipping target.
The article stated that the issue was a software bug. The update apparently fixed the issue. When you are testing a device and get unpredictable results, it is generally assumed that you should be contacting the company to get some feedback. A publication like CR should be doing that. My point was, contacting apple and getting feedback was not going to win them any sales or ad impressions.
