News Comments > Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars Announced
11. Re: ....right.... Apr 20, 2006, 11:18 Jow

I don't think I buy this "innovations sell" bit. I've seen tons of innovative, interesting titles go by the wayside for no other reason than that people like their comfort zones.

As a good example of this, of the top 20 selling PC games for March, ten slots are sequels or expansion packs (which generally mean mostly more of the same). Oblivion and D&D Online (?!) take up five slots for the various editions that were released. That leaves Guild Wars, World of Warcraft, Harry Potter and WhateverArcaneSoundingMessHe'sGottenHimselfInto, a Zoo Tycoon Collection, and Star Wars: Empire at War.

Admittedly, I haven't played every single one of these to be able to comment objectively, but for the so-called "mini golden age" of gaming that some people seem to think we've been in the past few months, i'm really not seeing it.

Raging Hardon is exactly what popped to mind here too. Ridiculous.

News Comments > State of the RTS
4. Re: I'll tell you where it's going... Apr 9, 2006, 17:25 Jow

RTS is just a label anymore, an inaccurate one at best. Subgenres have sprouted up (RTT, RTE - realtime tactics and realtime economy) and all get lumped under the RTS umbrella. I'm actually really looking forward to checking this article out as it's one of the few genres I'm still interested in PC gaming-wise... though I think it's also become one of the most stagnant.

Amen, venomhed. Rise of anything doesn't hold a candle to what they've pulled off with the Total War series. I can't wait for Medieval 2.

I think he probably is thinking of the Age of series in addition to RoN, because for the most part it fit very closely in with the Age games. Tons of civilizations, huge amount of research and tech to control, several different resources, very one-dimensional combat... The guy that said this put his finger on exactly why I don't like these games: there's just too much to do that I really don't care about (economy).

Depends on what you like in RTS's, i guess. I'm a combat sort of player, so i don't necessarily wanna worry about accumulating 15 types of resources or constantly managing research and teching and throwing hordes of units at each other just because and... yeah. I'm passin' on this one.

On the other end of the spectrum, I actually like the SF maps enough that I hardly play vanilla BF2 anymore.

Family Fun Stuff. I wonder if there'll be a "Coffee House" variant in THIS one.

1. say WHAT? Mar 15, 2006, 12:26 Jow

"We put a lot of effort into the physics and graphic effects of ĎAge 3í, but that was not done at the expense of game play and game play innovation. We believe strongly that games must be different at both the high level (new topic, new look) and game play level (innovation). You canít successfully sell the same game twice. People want new experiences."

It's precisely because the Age of games offer nearly the same gameplay every damn incarnation that causes me to run screaming from every one of them.

And by the way, Bruce, the PC industry right now is making its living off consumers playing the same game twice, three, four times. Don't look your gift horse in the mouth.

There's absolutely scope for that sort of thing, and you and I would likely be the only ones to buy it, I'm afraid.

I was gonna say, it surprises me a bit there's an expansion forthcoming cus it didn't seem like this did well enough to warrant one.

There was no sequel for Sacrifice because the sales figures were really, really poor for some reason. In fact, it suffered a fate similar to Tribes Vengeance, where further patch support came to a screeching halt with relatively no notice.

I never understood it, really - it wasn't perfect, but it was definitely one of the top five games in the last 10 years for me.

Making the UAV visible to me was a big mistake, but we'll see how it plays out. What makes no sense whatsoever is that the thing is destructible. Can you confirm or deny whether it's possible to shoot UAV's down now?

Most-anticipated. Yeah, right. This one will get some subscribers early, then be trampled under the beast that is World of Warcraft.
