News Comments > Left 4 Dead Patch This Week
15. Re: Left 4 Dead Patch This Week Jan 13, 2009, 15:07 Jow

I'm in the camp of people who love the game, but I've had it for less than a month and I'm already starting to lose interest. Great concept, awesome execution, and some amazing work with the AI and music controllers, but I can't see it as a game that's going to keep me interested for more than a month or two.

News Comments > Dawn of War II: DLC, Not DRM
28. Re: Dawn of War II: DLC, Not DRM Jan 10, 2009, 15:00 Jow

Loved Dawn of War back in the day myself but I don't think it's aged well, particularly after playing Company of Heroes for a couple of years. The micromanagement and grouping aids in CoH show how lacking DoW was in a lot of ways and with the speed increase in DoW in one of the later patches I actually don't really enjoy playing it anymore.

That said, I'm so stoked for the sequel.

yeah, i'm actually really giddy about playing as an infected for the first time. some buddies and i are doing a LAN gig this weekend, ten of us, and we're holding off on playing versus mode so we can all experience it first at the same time.

Reading about it brings back memories of the multiplayer mode in AvP2 where you had aliens hunting down the marines, both sides played by humans. It was intense and fun as hell. There's not nearly enough of that sort of mechanic in games these days.

L4d is a pretty cool game but I'm not expecting it to have the legs of, say, Team Fortress 2. It just seems like a game that's more about the unique cinematic experience and once the novelty of that wears off there's not much else to hold the interest.

That said, a caveat: I haven't played versus mode yet.

While they claim that they’ll continue to support the hardcore Battlefield experience, the head honcho that steers the franchise has stated that they’ll be focusing more on the casual and light-hearted type of Battlefield games, not a good sign.

No, not a good sign at all. I think the Battlefield series was probably the biggest gameplay innovation since Doom and seeing that go the way of the light and fluffy is disappointing to say the least.

How do you consolize the sequel to a console game..?

Fair enough, but I'll just say this: Dead Space is also available for the PC and it's possibly the first game I've ever played that makes the mouse and keyboard feel like a clunky interface. If they can avoid that sort of shit in Bioshock 2, they have my dollar.

Hear hear... and don't go the "Dead Space" route and consolize the hell out of it, pleeeeease.

THIS is the game they should have cast 50 Cent in.

Game of the year, really? Without having played it, this is such an 'under the radar' release compared to most of the other AAA titles that I imagine calling it GOTY doesn't say much for everything else.

News Comments > Supreme Commander 2 Announced
22. Re: Supreme Commander 2 Announced Nov 12, 2008, 20:00 Jow

That is what World in Conflict does. Each player controls their own little part of one army. It works pretty well but I think the devs of WiC didn't go into enough depth with the units. After a few games you're left looking for more variety and the games just boil down to battles you've seen and fought many times before.

You know, I really wanted to like World in Conflict. They did some amazingly cool things with the game but, and I agree with you 100%, they handed us the same uninspiring mishmash of generically named units that Supreme Commander dished up. So disappointing.

SC just needs a few more tweaks and the game will be fun. It's got the foundation but without something to make it more interesting it's coming up short.

I'm pretty sure Chris Taylor thought TA wasn't quite massive or strategic enough so with SC he tried to make a product much more epic in scope. Of course it's subjective, but I think that's the main reason I found it not very fun. By going epic you lose any attachment you may have had to your units and it becomes an exercise in moving around colored blocks. Whee.

You wanna make this sort of epic strategy fest fun? Give us the option to play multiplayer cooperatively so that teammates are each managing PARTS of one big army. I can't tell you the first thing about how to approach doing that, but I'm pretty certain if they could pull something like that off it would revitalize the genre.

...on the Russian/Japanese comment. The game is crying out for more non-German factions.

Can't wait for this - CoH is still my top RTS of all-time.

is this game really all that? I've barely heard of it other than knowing that the TF2 crew moonlighted on it for a while.

News Comments > WoW Plague Plagues WoW
32. Re: WoW Plague Plagues WoW Oct 27, 2008, 15:41 Jow

I've read many forums and listened to plenty of podcasts with avid EVE players basically all spouting the same things. They collectively see WOW as one big massive Carebear games (PVE and PVP). They feel like they can't loot the player's corpse. Or own the factions capitol cities. Or harvest resources on the enemy's lands. Basically they feel like there's no point to PVP because it's not meaningful.

THAT, in a nutshell, is why I quit WoW for the final time about a week ago. Not only is it not meaningful but on a world level it's flawed beyond belief.

That's what I was thinking - >= a year for a single-player campaign really does seem excessive.
