Here's a partial list of stuff that's been going on (from someone who's been involved since the Soulstorm closed beta):

--Downloading of both the beta and the full game itself was plagued with problems. Personally, it took 3 attempts to download both the beta and the full because downloads kept hanging, pausing, going back to "download starting..." over and over, and whenever it'd resume it'd always start back over at the beginning. I actually had one download tell me it was complete but half the game's files were mysteriously missing and I had to start over. It was amazingly frustrating and I've not experienced this with any other steam downloads/patches, etc.

--There were issues with the memory heap in 32-bit Vista, such that any machines running that flavor of OS and running the game on higher than medium graphics settings were crashing fairly frequently due to running out of texture memory. I was part of this group as well and though they released an update two weeks to fix it, running on ultra settings (which my computer runs rather well gameplay-wise) is still impossible as it results in the same dump183 bug.

--Multiplayer has a gamebreaking bug in it right now where reinforcing squads costs more in popcap than it should, artificially inflating what you have in the field, raising upkeep costs, and eventually preventing you from reinforcing or buying more units despite the fact that you should have plenty of cap room. This was discovered on release day but despite a bunch of meandering about how long it takes to get code fixes pushed and what GFWL has to do to approve patches, it's now been two weeks since release and we don't have a fix for this. Multiplayer is completely in the can because of this.

--There are a bunch of niggling little bugs that appear in both the campaign mode and in multiplayer. Occasionally, units will stop responding to movement or toolbar commands and will just continue the tasks they were doing when they went unresponsive until killed or the mission ends. Something I've seen 3-4x thus far - occasionally the screen will suddenly take on a will of its own and shoot to some far corner of the screen where nothing is going on. Hitting something to return to a squad or unit jumps back there briefly, but then it flies back to the same exact extreme of the screen where it was before. I've been able to get this to stop behaving this way by going into the mouse settings and changing the scroll speed, but this is completely ridiculous. Also, there are occasional things like units coming out of buildings permanently stuck behind bits of scenery (had this in a campaign mission earlier, which caused me to be unable to retreat or progress, so I had to exit the mission and lost a day of progress), units dying instantly despite not getting hit by anything (had Thaddeus killed in the middle of a jump from max health with nothing actually there just earlier today), and on and on.

Each one of these things is pretty minor, but when you take em into account as a whole and that they're really just the tip of the iceberg... anyone who's been playing without any issues at all is extremely fortunate.

The Dawn of War II thing isn't going to last. There were TREMENDOUS launch issues for a lot of people (myself included) related to Steam. Launch in general was pretty much a disaster with newly introduced bugs (one gamebreaker of which still hasn't been fixed), etc. I like Relic but this has been arguably the worst launch in their history.

on top of all these other issues, there's always the joy of having your purchases tied to being online. Digital distribution isn't this utopian model they claim it to be, obviously... yet.

Valve has for the fourth time unintentionally managed to turn their game into a wasteland of human desperation, greed, selfishness, malevolence, and irritation.

The community at-large out there is like that anyway - it just comes out more at times like these.

There are only a couple that I think aren't particularly fun to do. The rest I find pretty enjoyable, so I'm definitely not in the "this isn't fun" camp.

I LIKE the achievements and the unlocks as I think they change gameplay in interesting ways. That said, I also prefer to play and work toward them as I find it much more satisfying earning them the "right way". However, I'll also admit to going on empty servers with a buddy a couple of times to clear out a few of the really asinine ones (the one where you light a spy's cigarette comes to mind). *shrug*

I think the whole situation stinks and says a lot more about the quality of the people "circumventing" the system to avoid having to earn the rewards (which they are, ultimately) than it does Valve not preventing every single way of being able to accomplish this.

This whole "one week" thing is retarded. They cheated and in my opinion should lose the ability to achieve the scout unlocks again... period.

That's a pretty big issue. Is it really that hard for them to maintain compatibility?

Who knows, but in the first month with patches galore coming best not expect any replays you save to be viable for long.

I'm not overwhelmed by the awesomeness of the campaign like some are, but given how ambitious Relic was trying to be with this title I'm willing to forgive some of the wrinkles. There's a lot of good stuff here that I think will be ironed out with player feedback, etc. Really looking forward to the popcap patch so I can play multiplayer again and then beyond that what they have up their sleeves in terms of DLC.

that's exactly how i felt about primarch - not difficult per se, but really, really annoying trying to babysit marines that are supposed to be badasses but instead are tissue-paper. It just didn't have the right feel to me, at all. Captain (hard) definitely feels better in that vein but I wish they'd come up with a different way of increasing difficulty.

this actually seems to be working great for me, while others are still experiencing crashes. YMMV.

That said, one big problem down, several to go..

Caveman, I'd say playing Space Marines where most of your squads only have three members to begin with makes it pretty unplayable right now.

Creston,

thanks for the tip - never encountered this craziness before. I finally gave up on it last night and decided I was going to let it run overnight and if it bombed it bombed. Just before I left for work this morning it showed about 75% complete - go figure.

There were 5 maps in the beta, with two more released in the day-zero patch released simultaneously with the game.

Y'all enjoy it. I've been attempting to download the game for the last 4-5 hours and have had nothing but problems with Steam freezing at "download starting...", getting 4 or 5% into the download, going back to "download starting", then completely starting over again, and on and on. I knew I was makin' a mistake buying this through Steam instead of just waiting until tomorrow.

Also, I swear the grenade launcher damage is bugged, everytime it direct hits me, even when it's a no crit, it kills me in one shot.

I've been bitchin about that for a while. I've rarely had that happen vs. soldiers but against demos it happens all the time.

I don't hate L4D per se but after spending fifty bucks on it I was disappointed the game didn't have more legs. I think my group played it for a couple of weeks very sparsely (starting off with a ton at a weekend-long LAN gig, which is the reason we all bought it in the first place) and haven't touched it since. Really well done game with a lot of really cool software tricks but it's ultimately a one-trick pony which got old kinda fast.
