I really wish these moron marketers would quit using the phrase "Highly Anticipated" .

There ain't nothing "highly anticipated" about AC 2, nor 90% of the other crap that's out there in the WHOLE gaming industry... including games that aren't MOGs.

I take you haven't heard about Bioshock?

Blurb on Gamespot:
While System Shock 2 represented what Irrational general manager Ken Levine describes as "a convergence of technology and commercialism" (that game took place on a corporate-sponsored starship), BioShock will instead represent "a convergence of technology and biological life," or more specifically, genetics. It's important to note: BioShock is not a sequel to any of the System Shock games, nor does it have any official relation to those games. But like the previous games, this one will offer a horror-themed gameplay experience in which what you observe, and what happens to you, will be tempered by your own choices. "[At Irrational], we think emergence is the future," says Levine.

So, while I'm excited about Bioshock... it ain't Systemshock.

Irattional Games needs to buy the System Shock and Ultima Underworld licenses back from EA. (If possible).

Looks like Irrational Games is the only place left with a clump of Looking Glass crew.

I wonder if they'll ever get off their ass with the Freedom Force crap, and make a System Shock 3.

" does ANYONE give a shit about this game anymore?"

Not really. 2004 was a pretty satisfying year for shooter releases.

I'm not at a point where I absolutely refuse to buy the game, like I am with DNF... But it has slipped into the "insignifcant category" for me.

Understand - some of us do (or don't really care one way or the other). Deal with it.

Gonna quote something from another forum...

While most gamers / Valve fanbois don't care about steam... it's the first step towards agreeing to having spyware (must register an account with personal info) and adware (Informing you of other products, aka commercials) and bloatware (Several magabytes of crap) installed on your machine.

They need activation? Put a 1 time activation in the fricken setup EXE. (Like Windows XP... except no 30 day skipping)
Need a Patcher? Make a SMALL application like everyone else that supplies a patcher. Also make it an optional install.

Like I said... this is only the "first step". As this crap gets supported... it's going to get a lot worse and a lot more intrusive, as game companies adopt this type of thing. It's also a step towards the "renting software" scheme, instead of owning it.

So, some of us see the writing on the wall and refuse to support it. And I'm talking about legitamate software purchasers (I buy all my games), which are constantly getting punished more, for the hackers/pirates out there. I've taken enough punishment... and I will only allow a certain amount of intrusion. Steam starts to go beyond the line... and like I said... it will get worse as more companies adopt this type of thing.

If you use Steam as a software distribution system... and only download your games... I can see the value / legitimacy of Steam. (Must have a way to keep people from making illegal copies.)

However, if you go to the store, and purchase the CDs... that's an entirely different matter... as far as what Steam means to the future of software distribution and intrusive methods.

Ah... Big_B sees the big picture.
Glad someone could articulate it, without getting upset.

But I still say it's intrusive, If you didn't want to install the bloatware/adware/spyware, in the first place.

If you think that software transmitting something without your approval (as in no choice, unlike registration) isn't intrusive... YOU are the moron.

EDIT: And what VoodooV said.

Don't really care what your opinion is either.

A lot of morons, don't get the big picture, when it comes to intrusive software.

Steam will never be installed on my machine. Period. Don't care if I never play HL-2. (And yes, I BUY all my games).

Vampire Bloodlines gives me some "Source Engine Goodness"... even if it's not used as well as valve uses it.

Perhaps you should read the first paragraph of the article.

Yeah... my bad. I just skimmed it real quick when I posted the first time.

Downloading it now.

I never really had an interest in AO... but heck, since I don't have to give up a Credit Card number to try it... I'll bite.

My computer is kinda old, AMD 2000 and GF3.

You have a Geforce 3 and are complaining about how the graphics in a game look like they're from 4 years ago? Your card is from 4 years ago, ever consider there might be a connection?

Yeah... I agree with that. I don't think a Geforce 3 can play a Source engine game at decent settings.

BTW... it's not quite 4 years ago... but almost. GF3's were introduced in Spring 2001.

And the skills will be appealing enough for people to buy the expansions, otherwise what would be the point of exploring new areas without significant benefits?

Well... I agree about the new skills somewhat... but I don't think they'll be absolutely necessary to compete.

I think, since Guild Wars is designed not to be a grind (Thank God)... people will max out VERY quickly and PvP until an expansion is available. That will be strong motavation right there to buy an expansion... more areas to explore / quest / etc.

So I think it has more to do with wanting new content than stuff that can make the original obsolete.

All I know is that I have a lot of fun with that game and no monthly fee is a nice perk.... even if I end up buying every expansion.

I'm always amused by people who say that Guild Wars won't have a monthly fee. Guild Wars will likely have four $30 expansions each year.

I highly doubt there will be 4 a year. More like 2 a year if we're lucky. AreaNet says every 6-8 months.

Also... you don't have to buy the expansions in order to compete. They have said many times that expansions will not make the original game obsolete. You buy the expansions for more content.

Also... you are forgetting that most MMORPGs charge for their expansions too (EQ 1 has an 8 month average to their expansions). So you are paying for an expansion box PLUS a monthly fee with a full MMORPG.

Thats why I cancelled my EQ account after realising I'd spent in excess of $200 on a game where I spent a great deal of time sat on the ground looking at my spellbook.

Its for this reason I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of Guild Wars.

Yeah... after playing Guild Wars, I'm done paying a monthly fee for games, too. There hasn't been a game really worth a monthly fee in ages, IMO.... and they keep raising the fee.

Guild Wars may not be a full fledged MMORPG... but I like it tons better. The funny thing is... it's the only game that I've tested that I would be willing to pay a monthly fee for, and it doesn't have one! LOL (Yes, I've been in both EQ2 and WoW beta's).

If SOE ever makes the EQ 2 as fun as The Isle of Refuge n00b areas, and the first few levels in one of the big cities... I'd buy it. But I don't think that will ever happen since they still pretty much on their "forced grouping" kick. (Yes, I know you can solo grind lobby mobs forever, but that's boring compared to constant solo questing like you get in the 1st 8 levels or so. At least, to me.)

Still no posts.. people are supposed to be able to play today, right? It's definitely a much quieter release day than EQ was.

The servers are not open yet. Well the subscription server isn't yet. Whether that will happen today or tomorrow... I don't know.

That's why there are no posts. I assume they will allow posts after the subscription server is up.
