Unfortunately Spybot Anti-Beacon falls woefully short.

The only real way to guarantee that Windows doesn't phone home is to uninstall hidden system packages with DISM or Install_WIM_Tweak.

All the tools online are great for setting up turning off most of the stuff in one little gui... but you need to take the extra steps to get rid if it all.

As for Windows 7... uninstall and hide all the telemetry updates... and Spybot Anti-Beacon is good for the rest.

Well.... I'm happy to report that this does not happen on the Enterprise LTS version... just a cumulative update downloads.

Also none of the "normally can't uninstall system packages" that I uninstalled (Like Cortana, OneDrive, Feedback, Telemetry, XBox, etc. did not come back.

So, Score some extra points for the Enterprise LTS version!

I'm still going to wait for a few more major updates before I run Win 10 at home.

Very well, please demonstrate that proof for the rest of us.

If Microsoft is really up to what you're saying then it should be trivial to post such evidence.

Not sure what you want me to do... post logs that you can say I made up???

All you have to do is run a 3rd party software firewall that tells you when traffic is going out, and by what application.

Zone Alarm isn't good because it will allow a lot of Windows stuff through by default and I'm not sure you can configure it not to. I suggest you try PtivateFirewall... disable all the phone home stuff via the GUI.... and watch all the popups that come up as different portions of Windows still phones home as you do stuff. (And I'm not talking normal crap like DNS, NTP, etc) Then do a whois on the IP addresses and you will see that they belong to Microsoft.

remember 9/11? THOSE FUCKING TERRORISTS!! THEY HAVE TO DIE!!

better watch out - the terrorists are all over the place, and they have bombs too

the terrorists are gonna get you! microsoft too!

they are all out to get you... especially the NSA! remember them?

they are tapping all your phone calls and texts, RIGHT NOW! they have all your detailed info right there... so, better stop using this country, better stop living here

better fucking move into a cave somewhere

How apropos, given the Paris situation and the inevitable justification from governments to turn up the citizen surveillance card, "for our protection".

That said... you are missing the point. *I* control what my machine transmits... not MS, nor any other company. PERIOD.

This is totally different than some asshat signing up for facebook and other social networking sites, publishing their lives away, and expecting some sort of privacy. That is totally their option.

An OS is a base application that makes the system run... to not have control on what it can or can't do, is definitely a breach of trust. Especially when it falsely claims you have that control, and does what it (or MS in this case) wants anyway.

Not sure why it is so difficult to get through your thick skull that this is more about who is in control of YOUR machine, than what silly info is being sent.

The Ars article you're quoting even notes that is likely a bug. Does it still do this? Have you personally verified it? My install sends nothing when I click the start button anymore and hasn't for several Windows Updates.

Yes, I have personally verified the behavior... my statement had nothing to do with the Ars Article.

At the moment I can't verify a recent updated version still does this because my version has cortana, search, telemetry, feedback, one drive, etc. etc. completely uninstalled... so my version definitely doesn't phone home for anything other than updates.

Again... I'm waiting for the big build update to come down and see what it does to my machine.

If clicking the "start menu button causing traffic" was some sort of bug... I would have to guess that it was left over from the preview build for "telemetry on how many folks actually used the start menu".

The behavior that bothered me the most was turning off cortana and searching the web (local search only), even at the machine policy level, and it still sent traffic to Bing. That was a blatant issue for me. Again, this was shortly after RTM... I don't know if it still does that, since my successful endeavor to shut off all phone-home abilities.

Not true. In addition to that basic feedback crap there is some data being sent to MS that could not be identified by those who sniffed the packages.
MS are clearly not giving us (UI) options to really disable everything. They are only giving us make-believe options to create an illusion of privacy concerns.
As usual they display zero respect for their customers and try to force the shit on us that they deem best for us.

This.

One disables Cortana and searching via web, and Windows 10 still phones home when you click the start button or when you search.

Apparently Microsoft does, since they won't let you turn the shit off.

Actually... for me it's not about any "secrets"... it's about phoning home expressly against my wishes.

When a product gives you "opt-outs that don't really opt-out"... then I go above and beyond to make sure they don't get ANY info, including basic anonymous crash info.

Fuck Microsoft's arrogance.

Actually... I have an extensive security background and I use Windows 10 at work as my main workstation OS, because I know I will have to support it eventually. That said... it's the Enterprise LTS edition with all of the spyware / phone home stuff completely uninstalled.

I will be curious to see if the new major update overrides all of my un-installations, and whether I will need to do them over or not.

As for running it at home... I'm waiting to see what MS does against the Privacy Advocate's settings / customization, and whether it will be a cat and mouse game, or not.

This is a classic chicken/egg problem that pretty much comes down to driver optimization. There was never a reason for nVidia/AMD to put any resources into developing their linux drivers and they have always suffered as a result. Now that there is more hardware out there to make money off of, there could be incentive for this to change.

I think they'd have to do a lot more work to show that SteamOS itself was slowing things down in any significant way. It would also help if they weren't comparing DirectX with openGL adding another layer of development complexity to the problem.

This.

*nix drivers / OpenGL will never surpass Windows Drivers / DirectX in performance unless for some inexplicable reason a majority of games switches platforms for primary development.

PS4 and Android (at this time) aren't enough.

Not sure why you folks expect Gamebryo to be on par with what? Current Cryengine / Unreal Engine?

It is what it is... the graphics are ok for what it is, and the modding knowledge shared throughout the other games will prove to make the game even better, as the previous games were improved by the modding community.

I'd rather have the quick turn around for mods than a completely new engine.

Uninstalling the offending system packages with DISM (for making an install image) or Install_WIM_Tweak (For an OS already installed) is the only way to be sure.

Completely eradicate Telemetry Defender One-drive Cortana and other things

Ripley Effect - AKA "I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure."

At least this time, they made DLC PVE. The last DLC Imperial City was PVP only so they lost about 60% of their sales.

Technically this is their 3rd "mini expansion", and they rotate the content.

1st was Craglorn - Vetran area only, mostly group PvE
2nd was Imperial City - Any Level (scaled up to VR16), mostly PvP
3rd is Orsinium - Any level (scaled up to VR16), mostly solo PvE

Craglorn was back when the game was subscription based... so that's why it's not separate DLC like the other two.

But i can't see it... if it is true, I guess they figured their shit boxes were just top of line computers from 2007.

If it is true, I'm guessing it has something to do with gaming laptops being more viable than ever. A laptop with a 960M starts around $800 and will play most games @ 1080p easily. True AAA gaming on the go... not the IOS / Android Tablet crap.

If you want to turn off the snooping, you will have to BUY the Enterprise version.

1. AFAIK you can't "Buy" (retail-wise) the enterprise version. It's Volume Licensed Only. The only other way to get a copy would be an MSDN account.

2. Even with the Enterprise version locked down with policy, it still phones home when you click the start button (even with Cortana Disabled and Telemetry Policy set to completely OFF).

The only way to get rid of the Home Phoning is with DISM for taking the packages out of an image prior to OS install, or "Install_WIM_Tweak" to uninstall packages on an already installed OS.

Read this Forum Thread to figure out all the undesirable packages you can't uninstall normally: Completely eradicate Telemetry, Defender, One drive, Cortana (and other things).

I also posted an example with Install_wim_tweak here

The two methods I mentioned are the ONLY way to get rid of the phone home crap (among other bundled crap). These methods will work for the other versions (Pro, Home, Etc.) as well.

Also... a new build will be forced down on non LTS versions... meaning you will probably have to run the install_wim_tweak batch file you create, again, to again get rid of the crap.
