SCM:
It wasn't even an article, more like a brief thought, but when flipping through the pictures it was amazing how many I recognized without even reading the headers. I'm sure many of you did as well.
As to Half Life 1, I missed playing it until years after I'd played the hell out of Quake 3. And a good game it was when I eventually got around to it. I don't see the point of bringing it up though, it was a heavily modified version of Q1+Q2 source code. Perhaps HL1 could be considered an id engine game but do we need to rehash that old argument? Let's not even bother with the Germans.
COD4:
Yes, the first Call of Duty was definately a quake engine. Too bad they didn't bother making a game out the recent versions of whatever engine they used.
Elite Force 1 & 2:
I played Elite Force 2 a few years back and loved it. I just played Elite Force 1 a couple of weeks ago, I thought it was brilliant. I'm not sure which is better, probably the first. It took me all of two minutes to get past the Q3 graphics and get totally absorbed in the gameplay, I think I finished it in three days.
I started a topic in the 'PC Gaming' forums "Top 3 PC Games of All Time".
Blues News PC Games Thread: Top 3 PC Games of All TimeIt's really a trick to find other gems like this that I've missed over the years as most modern games PISS ME OFF.
One of reasons the Quake engine was so nice is that is was fun! A beautiful combination of intense action, skill and arcade all rolled into a 3d experience. You can *feel* a quake engine when you play a game based on it and feel at home in it. Unlike the *feeling* you get with some Unreal engines. Some of us were tuned to it and others were not.
I don't think I've played anything as comfortable since then. Including the short lived Doom 3 engine. Many of us subscribed to this board, back in the day, because of it. Long live Zenimax!
