Old, beer drinking gamer. I think my first game was the ASCII version of Star Trek on an IBM mainframe at my Dad's work. Second was probably Pong that he built out of parts from an 'Electronics Today' magazine on a black and white TV....

on the efnet #doom3 chat they were saying apparently there is a BestBuy in Minnesota that already has it on the shelf, and if you get your local BestBuy to call they will prolly sell it to you...meh...don't quote me on this, no clue if it is true.

So you're in Canada, and you can't spell 'probably'. What the hell is 'prolly'? Some kind of cracker? And what is 'meh'? Short for the crystal meth that you're on and can't spell 'probably' like a normal person because you're so cracked up on meh? I was born in Canada too, but seriously, you're telling me Doom3 is for sale in Minnesota? From your Aunt or your cousin? Prolly? Want a cracker? Meh freak.

(Sorry, don't take me too seriously, the lexicon slays me sometimes.)

Where is Dan's Data Letters when you need him?

My major problem is that I have TWO 21 inch monitors, BUT they can only display at a refresh rate of I can't remember what and 16 million colours, instead of 32 million colours.

So do I go for the old standby NEC 17" that can do everything, or the 21" absourbing junior? That can only do 16bit colour?

I'm into immersion myself. Decisions, decisons. A measly 17 at full, or a 21 incher at 16? I'll wait for the verdict. After you cunts have actually PLAYED THE FUCKING GAME.

Sincerely,

CreamyBlood

Holy crap. You guys are losing it big time down there. You have your Patriot Act, Digital Millennium Copyright Act and now this. Of all the peoples in the world, you'd think Americans would be screaming bloody murder over this. But I guess you're not allowed to anymore.

I've had a Yahoo email account since almost the beginning (a whopping 6MB storage, not the 4MB they eventually reduced it to). I appreciate the the free 100MByte's they've upgraded me to and don't mind the new look, but they're having problems today.

It is slooooow. Half the time I get timeouts and DNS errors and have to repeatedly refresh to view a page. I'm sure they'll iron it out but it's pretty much useless today...

Guess it's not free anymore (probably never was). When you sign up it gives you this:

"We are currently not accepting new registrations. Accounts can be purchased in our store (http://www.aventuremail.co.uk/store) in the mean time.

Go figure.

"PC gaming is far, far from dead. You could say it's a Far Cry from dead. You could say it still has a long Half Life too. You could say the Tournament to defeat it in 2004 was Unreal. You could say the 3 rumors of its DOOM were greatly exaggerated."

Good one. I'm still running a P3-800 with a TNT2 card, runs Wolf but I have to play BF42 at other places. It runs Q3 great! I haven't played any games lately that are worth the upgrade, just waiting for D3 and HL2. THEN I'm upgrading. Once they actually exist in commercial form.

At that point, I'll have a machine that should last awhile as I mostly use Photoshop and Frontpage (gack) and databases and Notepad for work. I always upgrade my hardware when id releases a new work of art/tech demo, whatever you want to call it. Then I buy a few dozen cases of beer, call up my friends, relatives and clients and tell them to fuck off for a few months.

Ahhh, it's been awhile....

Us hardcore gamers drive the hardware that drives the software, that drives the hardware. Who cares if a few million people buy a retarded Sims or Flirt game to run on their P4 3.2 machine that they otherwise use for downloading viruses and checking email?

I think bleeding edge PC games will be around for years to come.

I forgot about this, I've been paraphrasing it for about ten years now.

Somebody mentioned something about TBS. Well that station seems to rip out all references to sexuality and even bleeps out swear words, but intense graphical violence is okay.

Jack Nicholson said something like this many years ago "In american TV, lick a tit and it's rated X, hack off a tit with a chain-saw and it's PG-13."

Get your values straight. I can watch an old Chuck Norris film on TBS where he brutally murders thirtey-two different people in a violent way with blood and guns and everything, but they cut out nudity and and bleep out the 'cuss words'. Bizarre, dude. Very weird. Great exploding graphic chest holes, but no bad words or tits.

TBS, the graphically violent action station for men that like blood, without tits and bad words. Strange culture that one.

I just read 101 posts and that was the funniest! Loved it.

If you want to make some things more difficult to get for minors, go ahead. We do it for booze, smokes, porn and violent movies, but kids will get to it eventually if they really want to. Heck I was masturbating to Playboy of all things when I was eleven, smoking pot and even played a game called 'Schoolyard Shootout' on the Atari ST what twenty years ago? The graphics sucked so you had to use your imagination. Who cares.

My friends daughter (eleven) comes over and I let her play Quake 3, she's well adjusted and knows it's just over the top, exagerrated fun. In fact she first started playing at nine, which might sound young, but she has a brain, and it wasn't 'disturbing' her. She's top of her class and very intelligent. She certainly isn't a 'killing machine' in the making.

Her mom thinks these games are 'stupid' and doesn't see the point, but doesn't forbid her from playing when she comes over. And if she did, I would respect that and put in Kings Quest VI, which we also play.

If she was a maladjusted kid and was always getting into fights at school and failing class and being an ass, maybe I wouldn't let her play, but then again, maybe if she was a kid like that this would be just the sort of aggresive outlet a person needs, who knows.

As for making violent games R-rated for minors, go for it. It won't affect me, and it probably won't do much in the grand scheme of things either.

PS, Great post Moog!

Ya, spawn camping mostly happens in BF when the teams are uneven and I've noticed it to be very rare for people to even the teams when you ask them.

In almost ten years of playing online games I've never screamed out TEAMS! Or asked people to even the teams for that matter. I just switch, join the underdogs and kick ass. I stopped caring about points long ago and just want to have fun.

I figure if the teams are unbalanced and it's annoying you, don't expect someone else to do it for you, do it yourself!
