News Comments > Sleeping Dogs DLC
12. Re: Sleeping Dogs DLC Nov 1, 2012, 09:45 Reactor

From memory I'm pretty sure I fully disabled Avast. Others have tried many, many other solutions, including disabling virus checkers. In truth the HkShip.exe error is a pretty generic error, but there are two crashes (one on start and another after ten mins or so of gameplay) that most of the fuss is about.

I have the ten minute crash.

I want to finish the game, but it's currently broken with an HKShip.exe crash, after upgrading my comp. It seems hundreds of people have the same issue, but after months there's no fix.

I'm all for DLC when it comes to a good game, but a fix for major issues would be a loooot better.

I'll take this opportunity to say thanks for Blues! The best gaming site on the web by far.

Nice to hear people are safe.

You're not the only one, Steele. I really like it. It's like an improved version of 7 with a fresh lick of paint. I think the thing I like most about it is that it doesn't annoy me in small, unintentional ways like 7 did. The horrible sounds and constant Aero flicking to black during an alert just rubbed me up the wrong way. Win8 just seems much nicer in that respect.

That said, my free copy of Media Center won't install and there are a few bugs, so this is most certainly still Windows we're talking about

I gently weep as the masses argue that I should accept a fullscreen start menu.

I think people who like the start menu are on crack, personally. The search is so broken it's painful, you can't fit much on it, and it looks as ugly as sin. On the other hand Win8's start screen allows me to lay everything out how I want (or very close to), it looks much nicer, and has a search that actually works.

This obsession people have with the crappy old start menu leaves me baffled.

No, it's fine.

Edit: to elaborate on that, it's just like any version of Windows. Some parts work well while others don't. Even the venerated XP and Win 7 are full of the same half finished and clunky parts. That's Windows.

Heh, nice story

Some people are obviously better than others, but you're right things tend to be harder when people can't be bothered trying to retain any of the info given to them. It doesn't frustrate me though. That's just the way some people are.

Previous generations to this one do struggle with the idea computers aren't going to explode into a ball of fire if the wrong button is clicked, but they can be taught how things work. Most people though are simply poor at explaining things.

I like Windows 8. Some parts of it have obviously been designed by the biggest idiot in the universe, but most of it I like.

I liked the announcement. I have a Mac and a PC. It's nice to know if I go travelling with the Mac there's something I can play.

The grading is pretty good, except for the underground which looks a bit odd with a yellow tint.

I'm enjoying D3 after the latest patch. As a Barb I can actually kill things now, which is nice. I'm sure there are better games out there design wise, but I still find the game fun.

Yep, the mouse trumps the gamepad 90% of the time, but for third person games that feature lockon as a main part of the gameplay, pads are actually better. Assassin's Creed is a good example. It's just better on a pad, and it took me a bit to actually realise that because I've used the mouse for so long.

That said, there's nothing wrong with lamenting the mouse controls in DS. They'd be good if they were coded properly.

Well, I tried the game with a higher res and I actually prefer the chunkier vanilla look, because the game looks less like a bunch of flat polys with low res textures. It seems more atmospheric, but obviously that's just me, because everyone else seems to want a game running at 3k with AA, despite how boringly flat it makes things look.

Anyhoo, while this might not be the best port, at least it runs without crashes.

News Comments > Dark Souls Resolution Hack
1. Re: Dark Souls Resolution Hack Aug 24, 2012, 11:31 Reactor

Maybe it's because I'm not a resolution whore, but I don't mind the graphics when scaled to the equivalent of 1680. The game looks decent enough. That said, it's nice to have this hack.

Now all the game needs is the downright horrid mouse movement fixered (for those without a pad), and some heavy keyboard remapping.

EDIT: And I suppose if possible the 30fps limit. But, even that's fine. It's just the odd moment of slowdown that makes it seem worse than it really is.

The one downside are the mouse controls. They need work. Thankfully a 360 controller is a solid way to play.
This is the thing which is stopping me from paying full whack for it. I don't have a controller and currently don't see a need for one on my PC. I'll try the demo and see if that sways me.

It's not unplayable with M&K, it just has a somewhat irritating auto-centring thing going on. If they can disable that in a patch, the controls would be spot on.
