CS used to have a bug where randomly the first bullet would act like it fired, but it never really did. Gamers creatively called it "jamming" and would fire a couple shots at the beginning of a round to "clear the chamber" ...

... wonder how many other bugs like this still persist.

Thankfully with HL2 all the major moddable engines will be on their next gens and we can start worrying about other things.

Sound grooby, I'll plan on reading it. Personally if Doom3 doesn't perform on my vid card, I'm not getting Doom3. It's still a pretty powerful card for the market and if id hasn't written for it, then I won't be buying what id wrote.

Totally agreed.

Radeon X800XT-PE may not be worthy of being included on the same graph as we see average performance fall close to the 30 frames per second mark. Certainly this is not something you would want to experience on your $500 video card

OK - this has to be one of the most biased sentences I've ever read in a "benchmark" article. Not worthy? It was only 4 FPS slower than the next nVidia card. What the hell? I kept expecting a graph to be followed by "The ATI card was clearly hindered by having to go get it's skirt."

I love my 9700 Pro as well - it's been real good to me. I'll wait till someone writes some benchmarks that doesn't have so much stink on it.

Yes. But how many CDs is Doom shipping on?

2? Well, that would @ $1.60 to $0.80
3? $1.60 to $1.20 ...

not nearly as cheap with multiple CD's.

The media, I doubt, is the issue. Media is cheap - really, really cheap, at their kind of bulk. It's the cost of creating two master images, dual installs, etc. It's the stuff around the blank media that probably is the cost inhibitor.

I still am disappointed that id is lowballing the PC crowd.

I think it's better they stow away their pride and zealousness to protect a franchise that has every right to be defended than risk several years worth of MODs and artistic work being erradicated because they couldn't refrain from dishing out the criticism.

OK - #1 .... It's mod. Not MOD. There's no acronym, it's a short form of the word modification not the Ministry Of Defense. I don't care if Penny Arcade or anyone else spells it that way, it's just dumb. You don't spell Franklin FRANK or telephone PHONE when you shorten it, do you?

#2 - I would rather see this franchise stay in the hands of dedicated fans willing to modify years old source code than the hands of an ego who has been responsible for one questionable franchise and one of the longest running flame wars in internet history. If the mod team does it right, it could turn into a much better product (even if it doesn't reach as many people).

#3 - I wouldn't back down also because I don't see where DSmart, PhD has a leg to stand on. Remember, this is a guy who isn't shy from throwing around legal threats and the whatnot. I'd go on making the game I'd want regardless of random posts from some other dude until I got a real letter from a real lawyer with a real letterhead that I could use to call them back from.

And finally - I wouldn't get to worked up anything about this until his "contact" "sells" him the "license". Chances are, won't happen anyway.

What pisses me off even more is that people like YOU will ignore all the EVIL CRAP being posted by these mindless thugs and instead attack me for rebuking them.

Now how does that make any sense? answer it DOESN'T

Because they didn't insult me, you did. If you don't mean to insult an entire forum, don't address the entire forum.

Running out of DVDs is what most people would call a "good" problem.

The reasons are simple. 6 CDs to 1 DVD is 5 more chances of something getting scratched, broken, lost, etc. It's 5 more things someone has to find a place to store. It's an inconvience to gamers and it's getting to be an archaic one at that. Id's excuse breaks down to one thing - they wanted to save money, which - sure, that's their business, but seems a pretty weak argument for a title of this caliber.

Id's usually the one leading this kinda stuff, so it's annoying to see them take the cheap way out.

Can I have that handle when you're done flying off of it?

Pathetic little twists? FYI, my few posts on this have been polite, I've mostly been conversing about the logic (or lack thereof) of such a plan, and haven't said a damn personal thing about anyone.

So how about you take your flaming ass out of here until you can learn not to toss childish overgeneralizations like a brat throwing a tamtrum.

Yeah - I agree. If the source code is already out there, then this license isn't about tech assets (and there's better tech out there ... I know a few Unreal mods which are heading down this path). The story isn't bad, but there's certainly better backstories that could be written. The gameplay was great, really tight, really fun - but you don't need a license to get that.

I don't know what the license is worth, but it seems like there's better ways to spend the money.

Well Derek, or whoever you are...

Are you reading?

if I had a choice between never seeing another Freespace and seeing one done by derek, I'd choose NOT to see one.
(that means NO, btw)

I GUARANTEE you that I will NOT buy Freespace 3 if this man makes it. Period.
(NO as well)

Holy Fuck no, Derek Smart, if you are reading this, don't you Fucking Dare.

Definately a NO

I'm for it! Let him have the license. Maybe if he steps away from the Battlecruiser stuff he can come up with something good.

Hey, a YES

No they can't release one of the kick ass Space Simulators to him... Its unethical I tell you.

Bit ambigous, but most likely a NO.

And that's just this page.

As for "As for the mods, of course they HAVE NO RIGHT to exist and cut from the copyright holders profits. No business would succeed that way." ... yeah right, tell that Valve, Epic, id ...

I think most of us aren't confusing that. You just do two market analysis and make productions accordingly. As mentioned, UT2004 did this very successfully.

I'll agree it's not cause to pass up the game, but I'm pretty surprised at id's stance on it. They're usually a little more forward thinking than to force the lowest common denominator on people like this.

As for modding, my guess is that Doom III will resemble Q3 - a handful of decent TC's and a good number of gameplay addition/tweak style mods (which have always been some of my faves)

Production costs? Two masters?

What, they think this thing isn't going to cover it's margins? It's DOOM 3 for god's sake - it's going to sell like gangbusters.

If UC is so great, why does it seem like DS is walking away from the "franchise"?

It's funny to see the workup over all this, I mean this is a bit like me announcing I'll be taking over the PsiOps series because I know someone who works at Midway. But it's Derek so it always amounts to some, uh, fun morning reading.

Personally it sounds like really dumb idea. Derek's name isn't exactly beloved among gamers, and if it's a new direction he's after then taking up an existing franchise can mostly likely only piss off the existing fanbase. Freespace? Sure it's something of a classic, but we're not talking about a real big name franchise here. FS had some nice gameplay mechanics but it's not such a rich universe that it needs to be plundered again and again.

If old DSmart, PhD really wants to make a new name for himself, seems like a brand new concept and franchise is what's in order - not raiding the closet of someone else's old games.

Well not knowing what a Mobile Forward Base is, it's hard to tell how ridiculous what this guy is trying to do.

Course, that shouldnt matter - as trying to figure out what people might try to do is part of any good game design and that's a pretty craptastic response to a player.
