Spatial Fear uses the Unreal Tournament Engine...not the UT2003 one. Probably will be U2 after that.

You gotta love people who express opinions whose only source can be pirated versions.

There is already a mod group prepping an Assault mod. Whether it will be a waste of their time is up to them.

>> Actually, Assult got axed because of the terrible AI troubles they are having with the engine. <<

What AI troubles? They dropped Assault because it had been added quickly into UT and they didn't feel like redesigning it to fix the gameplay probs. From everything I've read, the AI code has been updated and made far more modular, making it an improvement from UT's already strong AI.

They mean a build of the Unreal engine around the current licensees. The models in the screenshots, for one, are beyond UT's capabilities. Same basic tech as Unreal Championship/Unreal II/etc

The press, Epic and Infogrames have done a simply stellar job of confusing just about everyone as to the name of their engine. The engine used in all Unreal-based games since Unreal I is the "Unreal Engine". Unreal II, Unreal Championship, Unreal Tournament 2, Deus Ex 2, etc, are using a build of that engine. The name "Unreal Warfare Engine" comes from an internal distinction between the builds which has tossed around by Epic and the press. Quoting from Tetris L's excellent U2 FAQ:

Builts 0xx-3xx are the classic Unreal engine; builts 4xx-5xx are the "Tournament" engine, builts 6xx-7xx are the "Warfare" engine. The latest built available to licensees is 854. For both the Tournament and the Warfare engine at least the engine core code has been completely re-written, based on the experience with previous versions.

So take "Unreal 2 Engine" to mean "latest Unreal Engine". Like someone said, DE has already done the porting of this to the XBox with Unreal Championship. It's also, reportedly, being ported to the GameCube by Level2 (think that's the name), same guys who ported UT over DreamCast.

This rumor has some strength to it. It makes a certain amount of sense and is extremely feasible.

Their PR dept. must be like 4 teenagers. They just got done with the UT2 fiasco where they leaked it on a release date, denied it's existence, got scooped by a press preview, denied it's existence, and then finally said "oh yeah, there's UT2 ... right over there."

This, I think though, is not the same.....a shame too. I was really hoping that game would come alive at some point. I loved the original X-Com. (note, I said the original...)

This will be the game to get a GF3 for, apparently. It supposedly will still run on a moderately spec'd machine with around a GF2.

1) Agreed. Make a bigger rule and say that marketing guys shouldnt make decisions on what's really a technical release - esp not without telling the tech guys! (sorry Mark!) But, on the other hand, the "touch up" was pretty slight, and Epic is doing the "right thing" by setting the record straight.

2) I don't think they've really released specifics.

3) Uh huh. :). The gameplay should be sweet as well, but we will just have to wait a few more months to find out.

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately the game played horribly for me....slow, buggy, impossible to control and the HUD kept doing this weird dance. It's a neat idea, but I dont think browser-based gaming has arrived just yet.

Never said it wasn't sweet, but the news bit is misleading. With watermarks, a non-standard save format and the inability to use plugins - it's essentially useless for Mod developers to use for development.

For learning and training, I think it's remarkable and I wish more companies would see the benefit of this kind of program.

The blurb does say "providing all the features of the full version", which isn't true.
